Describe the visual language of line, shape, colour, texture, tone, focal point, lighting, composition, and
space.

The "School of Athens" exemplifies the Renaissance's interest in realism and naturalism. Raphael
employs a number of techniques in order to create a realistic scene that conveys a sense of perspective,
depth, life, and movement. A series of vertical and horizontal lines, as well as geometric forms and
patterns, are used to create the image. The lines of the painting converge in the middle. This draws the
viewer's attention to Plato and Aristotle. Geometric shapes add dimension and perspective to a scene.
The painting's focal point is Plato and Aristotle, but they are not in the foreground. They tend to be in
the center of the drawing, moving towards the front. The overall effect gives the impression that the
spectator is seeing a true three-dimensional scene. Some things tend to be closer together than others.
Not only with Plato and Aristotle, but with the whole cast of characters, there is an illusion of motion.
The foreground, backdrop, and middle ground are all realistically depicted in the drawing.
