respect, relationship, truth. The theme relationship can be seen between the couple and the
community, the theme respect is shown through the husband and community and the
theme truth is shown between the couple and their community. These themes are all
present throughout the short story.

Firstly, the theme relationships can be seen in the short story “Neighbours” by Tim Winton.
It is displayed in the form of friendship between a couple and their community. An example
of this is “The man in the deli gave her small presents of chocolates and him packets of
cigarettes...”. Cigarettes are usually a symbol for stress relief. This symbolism is shown when
someone passes you a cigarette as it is known as a kind gesture to help you cope with stress.
