1. Words Scene.

Il Postino: The Postman | 'Words' (HD) | Massimo Troisi, Maria Grazia

Poetry was used to connect Beatrice and Mario together to form an intimate love relationship.
Theme- Relationships (Love & the relationship between Beatrice and her caretaker) How
Pablo made Beatrice feel.

Poetry can build intimate bonds and relationship between people. In the scene where the
character Beatrice would look outside her window the was a great contrast in lighting
between her home and the outside world. Signifying a sense of freedom from the outside
world rather than in her own home. Home is supposed to be a place where people feel
comfortable and a place, they feel a sense of belonging however, the darker lighting conveys
that that isn’t the case for her, she feels trapped by her controlling aunt also showing the
relationship between her and her aunt. The darker setting and the high angle also show the
authority and control her aunt has over her. Beatrice constantly looking outside with the
brighter light exhibits she wants to be free. After her looking outside the window it goes to a
flashback of Mario with a brighter setting which had a heavenly effect and reading him the
“naked” poem that Mario had written and read to her giving his perspective on who Beatrice
is, a pure and innocent person. Moreover, in the scene when Beatrice is looking through the
window to the brightened world outside then going straight to the flashback of Mario shows
that to her Mario is her type of freedom and safe place, this feeling is greatly felt through the
close-up shot on Beatrice clearly showing the facial expressions and emotions she felt.
Showing a flashback of Mario reading that specific poem could show that he was the only
one who understood her since it was only Mario who understood the purity of Beatrice. The
poem read by Mario helped in creating a strong bond between Beatrice and Mario further
revealing how poetry was able to build the intimate bond between the two characters.

2. Metaphors Scene. Il Postino: The Postman | 'Metaphors' (HD) | Philippe Noiret, Massimo
Troisi | 1994 - YouTube

Theme- Relationship (friendship) Poetry bringing a bond/friendship between Mario and

Pablo Neruda.

Poetry can form great friendships. In this scene we can see that in the beginning of the scene
Mario and Pablo Neruda were just acquaintances only speaking for work purposes. Their
bond began through poetry, they bonded through Pablo’s poem “Elementary Odes” where
Mario didn’t understand how metaphors worked and then Pablo Neruda began to start
teaching him what is it thus starting the beginning of a close friendship. Mario also seemed to
really like Pablo Neruda since he felt he really connected with the poem “I am tired of just
being a man” thus prompting him to want to learn poetry because he felt so connected by it,
but he didn’t know how. The eye-level shots makes both Mario and Pablo Neruda be in the
same level. It breaks down the professional work relationship boundary and transitions it into
a more casual conversation between the two characters. Moreover, the pedestal helps us
viewers feel like we are there in the scene making us more connected with the scene and feel
part of the scene also making us feel like characters connection grow together. The soft and
natural lighting make the interaction between Mario and Pablo more friendly and calm.
Further displaying how poetry was able to create a strong connection of friendship between
people.
3. I’m explaining a few things- poem. Pablo Neruda

Theme- Identity (Change of the places identity and change in Pablo Neruda’s identity and
perspective).

This poem written by Pablo Neruda gives us an explanation on why Pablo Neruda’s writing
style has changed as well as why the new identity of himself and the Spain. Pablo Neruda
wrote this poem based of the civil war outbreak that he witnessed and took part in against
Fascists since he was a communist himself. Not only the loss of identity for the place in the
poem but Pablo Neruda himself and his poems. How war changed the way he thought of
things therefore impacting the way he writes his poem. “I’m explaining a few thing” may be
there to indicate him explaining why his poems seem to be different or will be different
compared to his normal type of poems. From his normally sweet and beautiful poems of his
country, his memory of it before, to his saddened traumatised poems now. The sever change
in his cultural perspective of once a beautiful place to now a blood bath. This diptych was
used to help show the great contrast and the severity of the poem. The rhetorical questions
“where are the lilacs? and the poppy-petalled metaphysics? and the rain repeatedly spattering
its words and drilling them full of apertures and birds?” It’s used as a great beginning and
really catches the reader’s attention making them wonder what lilacs? And where they are,
what does he mean? This helps to greatly emphasise the amount of destruction caused by the
war. Personification “Castille’s dry face” is used to help greatly connect the reader and
visualise the place and how it looked and felt. Further emphasising the effect of the war. The
point of bringing in so much comparison before the war is so that people feel the need to act
and protest against fascist and the poem actually does a really good job in making the reader
achieve that feeling and urge.

4. Poetry-A lyrical poem. Pablo Neruda

Theme-Journey (Pablo Neruda’s journey with poetry).

Poetry-A lyrical poem by Pablo Neruda displays how poetry just came into his life and
helped him figure build up his identity, who he is. Poetry first came to Neruda by surprise “.
poetry arrived in search of me.” This personification gives personality to poetry making it
more human like. It shows how poetry just came to him showing how poetry is his identity
and he didn’t find or discover poetry but instead it was poetry who was thee one who found
him since poetry is part of him. Pablo Neruda then tried poetry for the first time after he was
still unsure of it and wasn’t confident “and I wrote the first, faint line, faint, without
substance, pure nonsense, pure wisdom of someone who knows nothing” the oxymoron
accentuated the conflict he had with himself of not understanding what poetry was. After he
tried it there was an instant connection because he had found the missing piece of himself, his
place of freedom and place where he could truly express his inner thoughts and feelings “and
suddenly I saw the heavens unfastened and open”. Pablo Neruda compared poetry to heaven.
“My heart broke loose with the wind.” In the end poetry helped his emotions break free from
the shackles it was once in and be as free as the wind. Meaning poetry helped him easily
break free.
