Subject: Math Grade Level: 5
I. Topic & General Goal Rounding Decimals: Round to tenths, hundredths, and
thousandths.
II. Reference to PA or CC.2.1.5.B.1 Apply place value to show an understanding of
Common Core operations and rounding as they pertain to whole numbers and
Standards decimals.

III. Lesson Objectives TSWBAT round numbers to the nearest whole number.
TSWBAT round numbers to the tenths, hundredths, and
thousandths place.
IV. Materials  Round up/down worksheet
 Rounding connect 4
 Lesson 48 worksheet
V. A. Introduction Write the agenda for the day on the board. Split the class into two
groups.
B. Procedures Group A:
This group of students will begin the round up/down worksheet
as a group. Students will underline the target digit they must
round. Students will round the numbers and submit to Schoology.

Students will play rounding connect 4. Students will play in

partners or as a whole group. Player 1 will roll 3 dice to create a
decimal number. They will round that number to the nearest
hundredths place. They will cover that place on the gameboard
with a counter. Player 2 will then roll the dice to create a decimal.
They will round their number to the hundredths place and cover
the decimal with a different colored counter. Players will
continue rotating turns until a player has 4 of their color counters
in a row, column, or diagonal.

After groups A and B switch, this group will begin working on

the lesson 48 worksheet with the cooperating teacher. They will
attempt the worksheet independently with assistance from the
teacher.

Group B:
Students will begin class working on lesson 48 math skills.
Students will complete the worksheet independently.

After the switch, students will complete the round up/down

worksheet. Highlight the place value words in the question.
Remind students of the place values. Work through the worksheet
as a group. Play rounding connect 4 as a group (teacher vs.
students). If students are understanding the game, allow students
to play against one another.
C. Differentiation Process: The rounding connect-4 provides a hands-on learning
experience for rounding decimals.
D. Closure Remind students their rounding quiz is tomorrow. Ask students
to move their behavior clips on the chart.
VI. Assessment The round up/down worksheet will show whether students are
understanding how to round numbers correctly. It will also show
if students know their place values.
VII. Modifications and/or Group A: Step by step instructions to play the game and students
Accommodations will repeat the directions. Teacher model will be shown and
student attempt tried before left independently.
Group B: Highlighting the key word on the rounding worksheet
to help students recognize the place value.
Co-Operating Teacher Approval Signature: Date of Approval:

IX. Self-Evaluation Group A did a great job following along and completing the
round up/down worksheet. It took two minutes to get students
seated and focused with the worksheet on their iPads. After
getting them started, students were able to focus and complete the
worksheet as a group. Today, we played a competition on who
could get the most answers correct and written on the lines. All
three students participated and worked to get the correct answer.
The students were able to identify the correct place value and
whether they needed to round up or down. The students were
checking one another’s answers to see if they were correct. They
were also supporting each other in getting the right answer.

Following the worksheet, students played rounding connect 4.

Two students played against one another, and I played against the
other student. They had to create a decimal number by rolling
dice and identify that number on the chart. They circled the
number with a marker. Then the next played repeated the same
process with a different colored marker. This game gave students
extra practice on identifying decimals.

Group B at the beginning had a difficult time getting started on

lesson 48. They were distracting one another. They finally began
working and completed most of the worksheet.

At the halfway mark of class, students earned their reward for a

walk. We took a five-minute walk and came back to the room.
This transition for group A was fine, but group B struggled. The
students wanted to walk around and talk to the other group of
students. It took four minutes to get these students on track and
seated. I went over the rounding worksheet with these students.
One student was able to complete the rounding successfully. The
second student struggles with place value but can round up or
down. The third student cannot perform any of these things
independently.

For tomorrow’s quiz, there will be two versions. One version will
ask students to round to the tenths, hundredths, and thousandths.
The other version will only require students to round to the
nearest whole number, or ones place.
