9. Procedure:

A)- Selection of dewatering method depends on the following :-

9.1 Depending on certain factors, one or more of the below detailed dewatering methods can
be adopted. The factors affecting the decision include among others:

1. The soil characteristics

2. The soil hydrology

3. The size and depth of the excavation

4. The proposed method of excavation and ground support

5. The proximity of existing structure

B)- Dewatering Method:-

9.2 Pre-drainage (Well Points System)

• Well points will be drilled by augers or high pressure water jet and fitted with
riser pipes at sufficient intervals to maintain the surrounding water table below
the level of excavation.

• After well points are driven into the ground they are surrounded with a filter
layer (5mm sand) to facilitate suction.

• Flexible elbows are used to connect the riser pipes to Header pipes, which in
turn are connected to suction Pumps.

• The water is then pumped through flexible hoses or discharge lines to the
discharge points.

• Once the water table has sufficiently dropped, the excavation may proceed in
dry soil.

9.3 Open Pump (Sumps)

• Excavation continues below the water table and a collection trench and/or pit
is dug to one side of the excavation.

• Submersible pumps are then utilized to draw off the water and pump it to a
discharge area.

9.4 Horizontal Drains

• Used in conjunction with one of the above mentioned methods.

• Prepare drainage ditches filled with gravel or perforated pipes.

• The ditches can be near the trench walls or crossing below the blinding.
