Melodic Lines and

Patterns
Melody shows how notes are arranged in a musical piece. This
tells how the notes are sung or played using a musical
instrument. Contour focuses on movement. So, a melodic
contour shows the movement or direction of notes in a music piece.
Notes may go up, go down or stay on the same line in a musical
piece.

These are 3 melodic contours:

1. A rising melody means the notes are moving upward. The sound goes
higher than the usual arrangement of notes.
2. A falling melody means the notes are moving downward. The sound goes
lower than the usual arrangement of notes.
3. A flat melody means that the notes are on the same line in the staff. The
sound stays the same even if the notes move.
