The Ups and Downs of Being a Pharmacist
In the early '90s, technology and information were not as
developed as they are today. Back in the day, what was studied
was only pharmacy in general. The image of a pharmacist and
pharmacy itself was more of a western medicine rather than
traditional medicine. So, finding literature and reference for
traditional medicine was difficult. But now, people tend to go back
to nature, and traditional medicine has developed rapidly.
Back in the day and up until now, there are still a lot of people
who don't know what a pharmacist is. People think pharmacists are
whoever it is in the pharmacy. In the past, there were only a few
professional pharmacist graduates and job opportunity for
pharmacist was such in high demand.
The ups of being a pharmacist are getting a lot of knowledge and have a
variety of career options, such as mechanisms of medicine, disease,
industry, and traditional medicine.
There are many job opportunities as pharmacists in the pharmaceutical
industry. For example at PT. Sidomuncul itself there are 35 pharmacists who
work in all industrial sectors, ranging from production, quality assurance,
quality control, research and development, laboratory analysis, and others.
This is just an example in the industrial sector, where there is a requirement
on the number of pharmacists to be recruited. The reason for choosing
pharmacist graduates over bachelor degrees is because pharmacist
graduates have more knowledge so it is easier to teach applied sciences in
industry.
Currently the role of a pharmacist in the Hospital Installation has also been
very developed. Pharmacists are not only tasked with giving drugs that are
prescribed by doctors, but also can provide suggestions for better drug
therapy in collaboration with doctors.
So, one of the challenges of a pharmacist is educating the public that a
pharmacist is not just someone who maintains a pharmacy.
What’s the difference between drug abuse and 01
misuse?
02
01 02
Abuse Misuse 03
Drug abuse occurs when
someone intentionally uses Drug misuse happens when
04
drugs for purposes they someone not following the
shouldn't (to get high or inflict medical instructions, but the
self-harm). Example: when a person taking the drug is not 05
person is given opium to reduce looking to “get high”. For
pain during surgery, but it is example, if a person is getting
used instead to get a pleasant flu and taking a single pill, then 06
or euphoric feeling (i.e. to “get they may take another pill an
high”), especially at higher doses hour later, because they think it
than prescribed. will be better.
What kind of plants that are often abused? 01

Plants that are often abused is Opium. 02

BPOM phohibits the use of opium in the
herbal medicine industry because opium is 03
included in the “negative list”. Some
country have allowed the use of opium, 04
but in Indonesia it hasn’t been allowed
eventhough there are many opium 05
derivatives. Opium and its derivatives are
addictive, therefore the use of Opium in
Indonesia is still prohibited. For example a 06
man who grows Opium because his wife
suffered cancer, but when his wife died he
is imprisoned because the cultivation of
opium is also prohibited.

Messages Related to Drug Abuse and Misuse 01

02
As a pharmacist, we have to become a good educator.
People have to know what drug is it, what is it for, and also the
side effect. Such case like drug abuse and misuse shouldn’t 03
happen if we can educate people well.
From the drug user’s point of view, depressed people should 04
be accompanied and given treatment from psychologists and
doctors. It’s not always all finished with drugs, it may not even 05
need any drugs. So don’t do self-diagnose, we need counseling
and we need to be guided.
