The Rolling Pumpkin
A Folk tale from Iran
Once upon a time in Iran, an old lady lived in a tiny village near a big forest

She had a daughter who lived on the other side of the forest.

One day she decided she would visit her daughter’s family; to get there she would have to walk through the
scary forest.
The lady
sang as she
walked
through the
forest.
All of a
sudden, a wolf
appeared in
front of the old
lady.
“Yum! What a
yummy meal!”
“I am not yummy, look at my thin
flat tummy. I am so skinny and
dry, not enough to satisfy.”

“But what shall I do,

I am so hungry?”

“Let me visit my daughter, she will

feed me savory and sweet. All over
me, I will have lots of meat. I will be
better for you to eat.”
The wolf thought
this was a good
idea and let the
old lady go.
All of a
sudden, a
tiger
jumped
down from
a tree in
front of her.
“Yum! What a
yummy meal!”
“I am not yummy, look at my
thin flat tummy. I am so skinny
and dry, not enough to satisfy.”

“But what shall I do,

I am so hungry?”

“Let me visit my daughter, she will

feed me savory and sweet. All over
me, I will have lots of meat. I will be
better for you to eat.”
The tiger
thought this was a
good idea and let
the old lady
continue.
She kept walking
through the
woods when all of
a sudden, a lion
appeared in front
of the old lady
and roared in her
face.
“Yum! What a
yummy meal!”
“I am not yummy, look at my thin
flat tummy. I am so skinny and
dry, not enough to satisfy.”

“But what shall I do,

feed me savory and sweet. All over
me, I will have lots of meat. I will be
better for you to eat.”
The lion thought
this was a good
idea and let her
go.
Then the old lady finally reached her daughters house.
After dinner, she told her
daughter about the
dangerous animals in the
forest.

They had an idea.

They went to the
bazar and bought a
big pumpkin.

They cut off the top to

make a lid.

With a spoon and a

shovel, they dug and
scraped, dug and
scraped, until the
inside of the pumpkin
was hollow.
When it was time for
her to go home the old
lady hopped in

With the help of her

family, she pushed the
pumpkin and sent it
rolling.

The pumpkin rolled into

the forest.
As she rolled past the lion, he called out,

“Rolling pumpkin tell me,

have you seen a fat old
lady?”
The old lady replied from inside the
pumpkin.

“No not me, no old

lady I have seen”.

And the pumpkin rolled away.

pumpkin,

“No not me, no old

lady I have seen”.

And the pumpkin rolled away.

When the old lady was about to pass the wolf the pumpkin rolled and bounced on to a rock.

The pumpkin broke open. The old lady quickly ran away, out of the forest, to her house.
Happy and safe she enjoyed a cup of tea.

As for the wolf, the tiger and the lion, They had pumpkin, lots and lots of pumpkin.
