LESSON 5. Assessing Learning Traditional Assessment in Primary Mathematic

Performance Tasks in
Primary Mathematics

Activity 5.1: Self-Assessment of Your own Understanding and Knowledge on the

Classroom Assessment for K-12 Basic Education Mathematics Program of the
Primary Grade Learners

Instructions: This is an individual self-assessment activity on your knowledge about the

importance of assessing learning in mathematics in the primary grades. Give at least three
(3) sources or references.

Assessment can play a key role in exemplifying the new types of mathematics learning students
must achieve. Assessments indicate to students what they should learn. They specify and give
concrete meaning to valued learning goals. If students need to learn to perform mathematical
operations, they should be assessed on mathematical operations. If they should learn to use those
mathematical operations along with mathematical reasoning in solving mathematical problems,
they must be assessed on using mathematical operations along with reasoning to solve
mathematical problems. In this way the nature of the assessments themselves make the goals for
mathematics learning real to students, teachers, parents, and the public. Mathematics assessments
can help both students and teachers improve the work the students are doing in mathematics.
Students need to learn to monitor and evaluate their progress. When students are encouraged to
assess their own learning, they become more aware of what they know, how they learn, and what
resources they are using when they do mathematics. "Conscious knowledge about the resources
available to them and the ability to engage in self-monitoring and self-regulation are important
characteristics of self-assessment that successful learners use to promote ownership of learning
and independence of thought.

Assessment is an important element of learning since it evaluates whether or not the educational
objectives are being reached. Grades, placement, advancement, instructional needs, curriculum,
and, in some situations, financing are all influenced by assessment. Assessment prompts us to
consider the following difficult questions: "Are we teaching what we think we're teaching?" "Are
students grasping what they should be grasping?" "Is there a better approach to teach the material,
resulting in improved learning?" Today's kids require not only basic reading and math skills, but
also skills that will enable them to cope with an ever-changing world. They must be able to think
critically, analyze information, and draw conclusions. Changes in our students' skill sets and
knowledge requirements necessitate new learning goals, which alter the interaction between
assessment and instruction. Teachers must be included in the decision-making process on the goal
of assessment and the content to be assessed.

Assessing Learning in the Primary Classroom is a user-friendly introduction to the ideas that are
essential for a professional grasp of this important component of a teacher's job. It covers the
concepts that drive good assessment, as well as the various forms it can take and the various goals
it can serve, both inside and outside the classroom.
