I. AUTHENTIC READING

Reading can mean different thing for different people. When people do reading activity,
they may have different purpose and different point of view in reading. The reason for
reading something depends on the purpose of reading itself. In doing reading activity,
some people may choose to read authentic materials. Having authentic materials mean
that the reading activity gives great exposure of the real life situation to the readers.
Authentic Reading is reading a variety of text for real purposes. Authentic reading is
most like that which occurs in everyday life.[1]
Authentic Reading includes:

 reading that is meaningful, relevant, and useful to the reader

 supporting readers with a print-rich environment
 providing choice within a variety of forms and genres
 having the opportunity to interact with others in response to the text
 focusing on communicating ideas or shared understandings
 providing authentic meaning-making experiences: for pleasure, to be informed, or
to perform a task.

Example of Authentic Reading

When we talk about authentic reading materials, we need to think about something that
belongs to real life. The information that provided in the reading materials should be
related to real life situation. There are some materials that can be considered as
Authentic reading materials:[2]
1. Takeout Menus
Restaurant takeout menus offer a wealth of authentic food-related vocabulary,
and not just the food items themselves, but the ways in which they are prepared
(sautéed, fried, baked, etc.)
2. Classified Advertisement
People who place classified ads have to pay per line, which makes abbreviations
absolutely necessary. But some are quite cryptic. With the use of classified ads
you can get a reading task that is challenging but not too difficult.
3. Company Websites
Company websites provide opportunities to read about and discuss services and
what people/companies do.

4. E-commerce sites or Print/Online Catalogs

Online catalog can help the reader to know some terms that related to the field
they want to know. They can find the item they are looking for with the
characteristics they seek.
5. Travel Brochures
Travel brochures are promotional documents that advertise specific destinations,
hotels, tours, vacation packages, or exotic locales. They are packed with helpful
information, providing travelers with all the details they need to make the most of
their trips. In this reading materials, readers can learn about the vocabulary that
related to nature and tourism object.
6. Resumes/CVs
Professional CVs/resumes give reader the chance to practice reading skills and
vocabulary they will need for job hunting.
7. Movie/Theater Showtime
People can find information about the movie they want to watch/see. Through
movie Showtime, reader will learn vocabulary about the term related to movie.
8. Newspaper
Newspaper, publication usually issued daily, weekly, or at other regular times
that provides news, views, features, and other information of public interest and
that often carries advertising. In newspaper, people will find many news that give
information about what happened in the real life.
 II. NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENT
Two types of authentic reading material that will be discussed in this meeting is News
and Announcement. News is a simple reading text that can be found easily in
newspaper, internet, or any digital platform. Another word for news is known as news
item text. In reading news, there are several aspects that need to be considered in
reading news. [3][4][5]
1. Main event or newsworthy event (Kejadian inti). This part tells about the main
event that being informed which is written in the form of summary.
2. Background Event (Latar Belakang Peristiwa). This part tells about the
background of the main event, where, when, who is being involved, and the
reason why it happened
3. Source (Sumber). This part tells about the comment, witness, the opinion of the
expert, etc. about the event.

Look at the example below:

Title: A Warehouse at Police Headquarters in Semarang Exploded

Newsworthy Event:
A bomb in a warehouse at the police headquarters in Semarang exploded around 07:00
am up to 08:00 am. 44 houses damaged and the head of Gegana was wounded
because of the explosion.

Background Event:
People heard the explosion three times. They thought that it was a tire explosion. The
third explosion was the loudest. People went outside the house after the third explosion.
The explosion happened in a warehouse at the police headquarters in Semarang. The
cause of the explosion is still mysterious.
Source:
One of the people said that he thought that it was a tire explosion but the third was the
loudest. Then he runs out the house to save his life.
The head of the police said that the explosion happened around 07:00 am to 08:00 am.
He added that the warehouse is the place to keep a variety of military bombs. The
warehouse size is 6 x 6 meters. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.

The explanation above shows that in making a good news, you need to pay
attention on the structure given in the news item text. The structure will help the reader
to understand the reading material well. As one of the example of authentic material,
news gives the reader the information that reflects the real life situation.

Announcement

Announcement is a formal text or statement text which is used to give information

to a group of people or public. Announcement can be found in the announcement board
at schools or company, newspaper, or magazine. The purpose of writing announcement
is to give or convey information whether it is about an event, job application, etc. The
information can be a formal one which is directed to public or certain group of people.[6]
The generic structures of announcement text are:
a. Title
Title is an important part in announcement because title shows the content of
the whole announcement. Sometimes, the title is written implicitly.
b. Explanation
In this part, there is the further information of the announcement. There are
some basic information in explanation such as type of event, date and time,
place, participant, address, and contact person.

ANNOUNCEMENT

In order to commemorate the 75th Independence of the Republic of

Indonesia, it is compulsory for all new students in the Academic Year of
2019/2020 of STMIK STIKOM INDONESIA to attend the 75 th
Independence day ceremony of RI, on:

 Day / Date : Monday, 17 Agusutus 2020

 Time : 7:00 am west Indonesian time
 Place : Basketball Field
 Dress code : White-black, and coat alma mater
 Contact Person: Mr. Eka
