THE USE OF LANGUAGE EXPRESSIONS IN WRITING “DISCUSSION and

OPINION” ESSAY
Example: Several languages are in danger of extinction because they are spoken by very small numbers of people. Some people say
that governments should spend public money on saving these languages [Idea 1], while others believe that would be a waste of money
[Idea 2]. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

- Khi đề bài đưa ra 2 mặt của 1 vấn đề: F1 & F2.
- Tác giả nghiêng về F2
- Cách phát triển
o Introduction
It is true that………………….. Although it can be argued that [F1], I believe that [F2]
o Body 1: thảo luận [F1] bằng cách xếp các ý theo hướng liệt kê, giọng văn khách
quan (có nghĩa không sử dụng các đại từ/tân ngữ hoặc các cụm diễn đạt cá nhân)

There are several reasons/benefits………[F1]
Firstly,……………………..

(Phương pháp liệt kê có nghĩa là các ý chính để bỗ trợ cho argument (lập luận) trong câu chủ đề
được sắp xếp ngang nhau, dấu hiệu nhận biết thông qua các trạng từ chỉ thứ tự như Firstly,
Secondly…).

o Body 2: thảo luận [F2] bằng phương pháp diễn dịch (đó là đưa ra các ý để bảo vệ
lập luận của mình (argument) trong câu chủ đề của tác giả , các ý này liên kết nối
với nhau theo 1 cách logic, chặt chẽ để support cho argument). Giọng văn thể hiện
quan điểm cá nhân xuất hiện trong phần này thông qua các cụm diễn đạt ví dụ
như “I believe that…”.
Example:
Despite the above arguments, I believe that [F2]. (Phát triển đoạn bằng
cách giải thích………………………………).
o Conclusion

2. Cách triển khai số 2
- Khi đề bài yêu cầu so sánh 2 mặt của 1 vấn đề: S1 &S2. Câu hỏi của đề bài sẽ có cấu trúc
so sánh.
Example: Some people believe that studying at university or college is the best
route to a successful career, while others believe that it is better to get a job straight after
school. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
- Tác giả đồng tình với S1 nhưng nghiêng về S2 hơn
- Cách phát triển
o Introduction
[Paraphrase the topic]. [While there are some benefits to …, I would argue that it
is better to…].
o Body 1: đưa ra các lý do để ủng hộ S1 (Dùng phương pháp liệt kê, hoặc phương
pháp diễn dịch). Giọng văn khách quan hơn khi không xuất hiện đại từ nhân xưng
số 1 “I”
o Body 2: tác giả dùng giọng văn cá nhân bảo vệ S2. Cấu trúc so sánh hơn được dùng
trong câu chủ đề. Đoạn văn này được triển khai thông qua phương pháp liệt kê.

- Tác giả đồng ý cả hai quan điểm P1 &P2
- Cách phát triển
o Introduction
[Paraphrase the topic]. [In my opinion, ……..(cấu trúc both……and….được dùng
trong khi tác giả trả lời câu hỏi)].
(Example: People have different views about the role and function of museums. In
my opinion, museums can and should be both entertaining and educational)
o Body 1: tác giả có thể triển khai đoạn bằng phương pháp diễn dịch hoặc liệt kê
On the one hand, it can be argued that [P1]
o Body 2: tác giả triển khai đoạn bằng phương pháp liệt kê hoặc diễn dịch
On the other hand, ……..[P2]
 Giọng văn trong 2 đoạn body có xu hướng khách quan hơn bằng cách
không sử dụng các cụm từ cá nhân hoặc đại từ nhân xưng số 1.
 Vì đứng trung gian giữa 2 quan điểm, nên cặp cụm từ nối “On the one hand
& On the other hand” khuyến khích được dùng
