Q&A Log

09:44:15 PDT

Question: can you deliver a sip trunk from an itsp directly to a branch location, which has an sba\sbs in it
and if so what would be the requirements to have that implementation supported? i.e. sba with sbc
integrated \ separate mediation server etc?
Answer: Being answered live by Brian!

09:45:32 PDT

Question: Would like you to advise at some point on the best LYNC 2013 option for setting up a remote
office that only has an internet connection for LYNC, not a dedicated WAN pipe. How do you maintain a
quality LYNC experience at an internet only connected site or can you ?
Answer: Answered Live

09:45:42 PDT

Question: do you still have to separate out the mediation server role if the sip trunk from the itsp is
delivered via an on-premise sbc?
Answer: Replied Live

09:48:00 PDT

Question: Is there a fully hosted Lync 2013 solution around Office 365 Lync and some VOIP hoisting
provider that provides most of the Lync voice capabilities and Lync Office 365 Exchange integration to
small business for a small number of users and a small cost per month that avoids a hardware investment
other than possibly a few Polycom VOIP phones?
Answer: HI Bill - there are various companies that host Lync 2013 and Exchange 2013 offering a various
level of services. Keep in mind that this does not include O365 today as full enterprise voice in the cloud is
not available from O365

09:58:36 PDT

Question: Will it be shown/talked about how to deploy website for external users? I mean
http://meet.domain.com
Answer: This probably will not be covered in much depth. This is a fairly straight-forward part of
deployment. The Meet URL just needs to be published by an HTTPS Reverse Proxy, such as TMG, and have
a certificate assigned that has the correct Subject Name and Subject Alternate Names, such as
meet.domain.com, dialin.domain.com, public.domain.com, etc. Along with the proper DNS entries
resolving these names.

10:10:44 PDT

Question: Are there any plans to add a hosted VOIP solution to O365?
Answer: You can never guess what MS is planning However, person-2-person VoIP and dial-in 3rd
part conferencing is supported today

10:26:59 PDT

Question: Hi there! I use to follow the Jump Start recorded sessions through MVA instead of the live
signal (because of the time difference, I'm in GMT+1) but I've found some of your Lync 2010 sessions and
I wonder if it's worth to watch those courses (to have some background on the product) or I'd better
forget about Lync 2010 and study Lync 2013 directly. What would you recommend?
Answer: There have been some significant changes. I'd say it really depends on what your organization or
your clients are using and what you need to do. My approach would be to scan the slides for each session
to see if there are details that will be relevant to you.

10:30:49 PDT

Question: Hey any expected timeline for the 336 videos being available ?
Answer: Sorry about the delay on those. We are finalizing the self assessment quizzes and processing the
video. I expect to have them published next week.

Q&A Log

10:40:27 PDT

Question: Main number must be unique? But extensions need not be unique? Right?
Answer: Hi Sahil - actually the opposite; the main number may be the same as long as the extensions are
unique

10:57:58 PDT

Question: Is MTP central media processing needed for lync trunk?

Answer: Select the

11:03:20 PDT

Question:
> Quoted question: Is MTP central media processing needed for lync trunk?
> Quoted answer: Select the
Answer: Select Centralized media processing check box if there is a well known media termination (for
example a PDTN gateway where the media termination has the same IP as the signaling termination).
Media bypass is only supported if this option is selected. It depends on your trunk

11:05:40 PDT

Question: What is the role of bandwidth policy server? Why this service is installed on edge server?
Answer: Hi Sahil, Great question. The bandwidth policy service is a service supporting call admission
control or CAC for short. With this role you can apply bandwidth policies to control concurrent media
sessions on WAN links, between regions and sites. This role is installed initially on the front end server. All
clients will start polling for bandwidth availability there. If you add an Edge server the edge server or pool
will be used for this service. Clients will then poll the edge server for available bandwidth.

11:10:53 PDT

Question: So if you have one main DID and no unique DID's for each users we would use a Route for
these or an incoming dial plan? Do you have to have unique DID's for each user?
Answer: Do you mean if you have 1 switchboard number? No route is needed for inbound routing. If you
want the non did users to call outward you need a route. You need to consider letting the telco switch to
a default outbound number presentation or control this with a route that includes a overruling phone
number for outbound number presentation. Each user needs a unique user DID or none.

11:11:29 PDT

Question: Dear Team, Requesting you to answer as my of questions posted as it will surely increase value
to this jumpstart and useful for others to learn technology..
Answer: Hi Sahil, Just got in based on technical difficulities. The team will try to do its best to answer all
questions.

11:19:22 PDT

Question: Brian In my case we have a DID in a site A: +552132193004;Ext=3004 and in site B:

+557121193004;Ext=3004 What is the recommendation for this case?
Answer: The extension needs to be unique. if this is overlapping you need to review the global number
plan. What you could do is prefix with a unique site number +557121193004 user from site A = site prefix
1 : +557121193004 ;Ext=13004 and site B = site prefix 2+552132193004 ;Ext=23004. or try ext=2193004
or ext=1193004. Overlapping is always a challenge. make sure it is as short as possible and when it is long
enough to match the digits in local calls make the normalization rule be more unique and higher on the
Normalization rule list. I'm sure there are more options. Remember that usually implementing Lync.... the
extension is not longer important to remember, because you can call names. For dialin conferencing and
logging in on IP phones, you need to account for a extension that is unique. prefix with a site ID usually
fits all needs then. Try it out in the lab and play a little with it.

11:21:13 PDT

Question: ohhh...Brian sir i am not able to assign same tel uri for 2 different users
Answer: Hi Sahil, It is true. The user URI needs to be unique. If you need to share a number, a response
group will help you out.

11:21:42 PDT

Question: Can multiple logical routes between lync and voice gateway?

Question: How are unassigned numbers identified by lync routes

Answer: Unassigned numbers are part of the phone number lookup process. If no match is found the
Unassigned number service will pick up as last resort.

11:33:03 PDT

Question: How pririty is assigned to routes in a given pstn usage?

Answer: Good question Sahil. If you assign 2 gateways to a single route, the route will be load balanced.
If you create 2 routes and assign them to the same pstn usage you can change the order and configure
the primary and backup route.

11:35:55 PDT

Question: Is there a way for a response agent to call forward to his mobile, if, let's say he is stepping out
of the office?
Answer: Hi Rohit, You could configure the response group with a failback number, that is the mobile
phone. But you will have 2 voicemail places...

11:37:06 PDT

Question: How many trunks can be created from Mediation server to gateways? How many gateways can

Q&A Log

11:40:27 PDT

Question: How do server use address book service to convert numbers into E.164 format?
Answer: Numbers are either E164 or not. In essence Lync takes the numbers into the address book that
starts with a plus sign. You can manipulate company phone number notation in active directory by
creating a supporting file on the abs fileshare. company_normalization_rules.txt more info on this here on
this fantastic blog post. http://blog.schertz.name/2010/09/lync-2010-address-book-normalization/ . This
still applies for Lync 2013.

11:43:59 PDT

Question: Is there a good link that explains how Lync does Expressions like discussed in the session?
Answer: It is basically .net Regex based. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regular_expression.

11:44:59 PDT

Question: How long can You make hair?!

Answer: Long hear takes Long care, Grzegorz.

11:49:47 PDT

Question: in ocs 2007R2 resource kit there was the RouteHelper tool that was very useful
Answer: It is built into the Lync Server Control Panel.

11:50:02 PDT

Question: Justify: Media bypass and CAC are mutually exclusive....I have one site called XYZ...Its backup
site is ABC...Site XYZ failed..Site failover took place . But lync policy server located in site XYZ is down. Will
CAC permissioons will be allowed. If no, justify.
Answer: If a single pool with cac services goes down the call will pass, disregarding the policies. To
account for this, you could deploy 2 pools in 2 sites (cac services are site specific) and deploy cac on both
pools. Pool pair these pools. If 1 pool fails. You can fail over the users, the users now home on the 2nd site
and use the same global cac BW policies. BW polling is done by the clients on the new pool.

Question: With dialplans, is there a way to manipulate what's displayed (ANI) for outbound calls?
Example: Someone from Costra Rica outdailing and instead of their actual number being displayed, say a
US number is displayed instead?
Answer: Yes, on your Routes you can select Suppress caller ID, and then you can specify the Alternate
caller ID and you can put whatever you want there.

11:55:22 PDT

Question: how about having capability of partitioning between PDTN/CUG in dialplan or normalization
rules ? as many contries like India need it... can we have two lines in Lync client one for internal & other
for external calling only ?
Answer: You can have 2 lines with seperate numbers. Private line, and normal line. You already can get 2
calls. Answer 1, then take the 2nd call, this automatically puts call 1 on hold. You can handle the 2nd call
and get back to the first.

Question: Thanks Jonathan

Answer: Its always good to help out fellow Lync community members!

12:00:19 PDT

Question: After how much period the call be forwarded to voice mail? Which AD attribute is responsible

call if no user is matched to any other service or user with the dialed number within the dialplan.

12:08:55 PDT

Question: Can PSTN routes be assigned through a cost policy? We have lower fares when calling to

12:58:32 PDT

Question: Question about normalization rules: Is processing stopped after one matched successfully, or
are latters processed as well? Example: Rule 1 ^(\d{4})$ -> 66$1 Rule 2 ^(\d{6})$ -> +34985$1 If an

12:59:05 PDT

Question: is there a exam to upgrade my MCITP Communication (Lync 2010) to MCSE Communication
(Lync 2013) ?
Answer: There is none. You need to do both 70-336 and 70-337 exams.

13:03:36 PDT

Question: Why early media support is necessary? what does SIP 183 signify?
Answer: Early media provides early setup of the call over IP networks. This will setup the media path in an
early stage. The initial invite of the User Calling sends over ip addresses and ports for the other party to
send media and rtcp to. In the SIP 183 (early dialog) the called party sends back its ip addresses and ports.
This way, before the user picks up the phone (giving 200 OK) the media path will already be established
after media testing of all provided ip addresses and ports, providing a seamless call experience.

13:05:48 PDT

Question: "SIP 2.0 488 NOT ACCEPTABLE HERE" Is this the indication for call-reroute??
Answer: This can be lots of things around incompatible session setup.. Usually this is a response to a
failed pstn session with a 3rd party pbx for example, that did not negotiate matching codecs.

unassigned number as a block or can you only put in ranges asociated with Lync and not the numbers
associated with the other system
Answer: You can, but in a migration scenario it is better to use the PBX systems announcement service
(similar) first and then plan moving to the Lync system for this. Or vise versa. Depending if the PBX is
uPDTream or share a gateway with Lync.

14:00:45 PDT

Question: is it possible to broadcast radio instead of music on hold ?

Answer: Hi Benoit, interesting question. It is not a native feature of Lync. That said... It could be created
with 3rd party solutions, I think.

14:20:14 PDT

Question: Do we see the new feature - Call pickup?

Answer: Hi Carsten - no regarding Group Call pickup. This presentation is pre-CU1.

Question: May I ask an unrelated question that probably will be covered in module 7 while we are
waiting:Why is it the Lync party receiveing a session request that is checking bandwidth availablity with
the CAC service and not the initiating party? (page 7-12 in the 20337 book)
Answer: Good question Mattias, but pretty heavy, my guess and understanding is that the Receiving
party knows all IP subnet information of both parties first, because in the initial invite the Caller party
sends its subnet information in the SDP field and the Called party already knows its own IP subnet
information. So it would be quicker to check by this party than, waiting for the caller party to receive the
183 with IP subnet information from the Called party, and then check. Also note that media testing starts
as soon as a client receives the other party's IP and Port information. It is important for the client to know
if there is BW available over a WAN before Media testing. If there is no BW available it would not make
any sense to negotiate the blocked route as a valid option or wait for the Caller party to determine if the
call can be made or not... adding latency in the call setup process.

Question: @MartinKulir - To upgrade from MCITP (Communication /Lync 2010) to MCSE Communication
you only need to pass 336 and 337 not 417
Answer: Please note that 417 is the MCSA upgrade for MCITP windows server 2008 (r2) certified people.
You need to be MCSA for windows server 2012 and pass 336 and 337 to be MCSE Communication. 417 is
the upgrade path. 417 covers 410,411 and 412. If you did not have MCITP yet you should follow 410,411

Answer: Hi Liz - Internet Explorer will pass your logged in credentials to any website that is listed in
Options | Security | Local Intranet | Advanced. In our demo we added *.onprem.local to the list as the
website address was covered by this wildcard. If your control panel was set to lyncadmin.contoso.com you

Question: how much load should we expect if annonimity is enabled & have 50 simultanious calls are
expected simultaniously ? (cause it's good to preserver the identity of that person.)

number of servers in the pool. The best way to know is to test in a pilot and gather your own numbers on
your hardware.

Question: Does FEC inreases BW requirements?

Answer: Yes and no. FEC provides in redundant packets. Thus doubling the BW used. However, usually if
FEC is utilized often in a deployment, you have a big network problem. So planning for BW utilizing FEC is
not recommended. And thus not a requirement.

team or if that does not help check with Microsoft support to solve the issue.

09:16:52 PDT

Question: Does Lync changes video codec or video frame rate?

Answer: Yes, depending on policy or available BW and network conditions.

09:17:57 PDT

Question: IN FEC is good solution for lossy wifi network?

Answer: FEC is not a solution i think. FEC kicks in when you have more than 5% packetloss. That means
you should check and optimize your network rather than plan for FEC / Forward Error Correction

09:17:59 PDT

Question: Do you have the slides for today?

Answer: We will have the slides posted very soon.

Question: Whats sampling rate in RTAudio narrow BW?

Answer: 8 kHz

09:19:56 PDT

Question: can you force FEC to be on? my impression it only turns on during a call as needed
Answer: Hi Korbyn, good question. It only kicks in when the Packet loss surpasses 5%. Its dynamic and
changes realtime in the call.

09:23:22 PDT

Question: Siren Codec is a worse Protocol. !!!!

Answer: Hi Sahil, I must say. I do not agree on you with that one. Siren is used in Lync 2010 and OCS. Had
lots of good conferences with it. In lync 2013 we use G.722 Stereo and G.722. SIren is also still used for
fallback and / or legacy interop. G.722 is just sooo much better.

Question: no udp is not always used, if we disable udp port 3478, we have to send media on tcp port 443
Answer: Correct. both UDP and TCP media connectivity candidates are negotiated in the call setup. UDP
is just the the prefered delivery method, because it is faster and has less overhead.

09:29:11 PDT

Question: we have, but there's this constant issue that comes up frequently where media traffic from the
FE-to-Client is poor, with packet loss and high concealment, but traffic from the client-to-FE is perfectly
clean. Not a lot of users, 25 maybe, and lots of available bandwidth
Answer: Maybe MS support can help you out sort this out. Could be many things. Virtualisation processor
overbooking, network interface broken, Driver issues, Hardware scaling.

09:32:50 PDT

Question: does Lync support AVC & SVC codecs in h.264 ? does it support h.263 as well ?

conference.

09:34:44 PDT

Question: Does G.722 stereo codec is ever used in Lync 2013 conferencing?
Answer: Good question. Supported endpoints send this. Room systems for example, support stereo
sampling.

UDP was used. thanks!

09:41:44 PDT

Question: Suppose, lync phone is connected to lync server via edge? Is Qos supported?
Answer: It actually is not. not that the phone does not support this.. but the network between the External
Endpoint and the Edge server are not managed. There fore you can assume that no QoS will be used that
we can control.

09:43:47 PDT

Question: does this include remote users using Direct Access also...since this is IPsec based?
Answer: Hi BRad good question. You should bypass the media going true the Direct Access tunnel. You
can do so by blocking DNS resolution for the internal Front end servers. Good article to look at is
here:http://blogs.technet.com/b/nexthop/archive/2011/11/15/enabling-lync-media-to-bypass-a-vpn-

09:45:47 PDT

Question: when we add another party to the call that is on the PDTN, what is doing the transcoding?
Answer: Great question Glenn! The mediation server will be in the media path to transcode media
between the PDTN gateway / SIP trunk and the Conferencing server.

09:51:00 PDT

Question: Hi. how is the current amount of used bandwidth measured or tacked?. I mean you define your
CAC policies and have your QoS, but for example users on the same office/subnet start placing calls, at
some point there´s no more room and next one is denied by CAC. How Lync knows we hit the limit?
Answer: BW is reserved and monitored. The availabillity of BW is therefore known and when the limits
hits its cap limit the call will be denied, alternate routes like PDTN reroute and EDGE reroute are then tried
by the Lync client.

There are some priorities that can't be used because they are reserved for inter router communication.

10:27:10 PDT

Question: awesome!! thanks Jonathan

Answer: You're very welcome!

10:30:48 PDT

Question: Media bypass saves WAN bandwidth!!!!! for branch office

Answer: That is correct. In PDTN call scenario's that is true when there is a local gateway in that site, that
supports media bypass.. This is possible because the Lync client, since Lync 2010 supports G711. No
mediation is needed. if both endpoints talk the same language.

10:35:37 PDT

Question: SIP trunks are directly terminated to mediation server? How does media bypass possible in SIP
trunk. If Sip trunks sends G.711 codec, Still transcoding of media is done?

Question: in case of Polycom IP321 do not support Pin Authentication.. still possible the use like Common
Area Phone ?
Answer: Hi Robson - a Common Area Phone - or CAP - is a contact object by definition. This means
without PIN authentication, there is no way to login to the phone. However, if policy permits, you could
create an AD account, provision it in AD, and even add the HotDesking option to a custom client policy;
you do add a larger scope of intrusion as the phone is logged in with a 'Service Account' but it could be
done

14:47:12 PDT

Question: What happens to response groups and call park service when my primary pool is down?
Answer: These are not failed over. For the response groups you could bring up the configuration by
deploying the backups for them on the backup pool. Needs manual intervention and manual backup
(meaning not part of backup service).

14:48:44 PDT

Question: Is an Active Directory replica necessary for branch offices?

Answer: Hi Diego - no. As long as the connection to AD and the pool is present at first login, a certificate
is returned allowing the phone/user to authenticate using the certificate without the need for AD.

14:53:03 PDT

Question: Brian are you typically deploying dedicated Lync mediation servers with SIP PDTN services in
addition to the FE pool, or do you rely upon mediation services built into the gateways as prefereed
deployment reference architecture? Interested on what you typically see out in customer base. Thanks.
Answer: Hi Andrew - that is a loaded question. Nearly every deployment is unique and every deployment
requires a different design. If the client has a branch office, it an SBA may be used if the level of user
importance is mid-low, and an SE/EE pool if the users are important. For the data center, collocated vs
standalone mediation has many determining factors such as number of concurrent calls, media bypass,
etc.

14:54:07 PDT

Question: So that means if the certificate happens to expire at the time of a WAN link failure, connectivity
to the SBA won't work anymore either as authentication will fail?
Answer: Roman, if you were ever so lucky or you had never logged in at the branch site, you would
simply not be able to connect until the WAN link was back online.
