4 Troubleshooting
E001 tube kV max
Description: Tube kV maximal limit detection by hardware interrupt on the ZST2 board. Exposure
switched of immediately by hardware.
Contactors K1 and K2 inside of the converter switched of.

Cause 1: Incorrect jumper configuration (X9) on the ZST2 board.

Check the jumper position of X9 on the ZST2 board (see chapter 7.3.1 in the service
manual).
Two different kV limits can be set by jumper X9 on the ZST2 board.
X9: closed Tube kV max = 166kV
X9: opened Tube kV max = 133kV

Cause 2: Wrong tube calibration.

Too low tube current will cause in an overshoot of the tube voltage.
Recalibration of the tube (see chapter 3.2.5 in the service manual.

Cause 3: Wrong adjusted potentiometer R52 results in an overshoots of the kV by exposure start.
R52 on the ZST2 controls the start energy of an exposure depending of the set exposure
parameters. Turn clockwise increase start energy and turn anticlockwise reduce the energy
by exposure start.
Use service software to check the kV curve shape of an exposure. Possible overshoot of
the kV during rise time.
Reduce the start power by using the potentiometer R52 on the ZST2 (see chapter 7.3.3 in
the service manual)

Cause 4: Arcing of the tube.

Tube arcing can cause heavy oscillation of the tube kV.
Replace tube.

Cause 5: Broken IGBT V3 of the step down converter (buck converter) inside of the converter
module.
Error is detected immediately after exposure start. In this case the error occurs also by
exposures with low set kV.
Do not repeat an exposure with broken IGBT V3.
Check the IGBT V3 and replace it (see chapter 3 IGBT check-up)
Page 6 von 37 Troubleshooting / Error Handling EDITOR HFe

E001 tube kV max

Cause 6: Faulty +/-15V power supply on the ZST2 board.
E001 is detected directly after switching on of the generator during self test. No x-ray is
started. The hardware interrupt of this error is always active.
Check LED V41 (+15V) and LED V8 (-15V) on the ZST2 (both green LEDs should be on).
Check the voltage on Test point X38 (+15V) and X14 (-15V), X41 (GND)
Check fuses F3 and F4 on the BUS2 board.

Cause 7: Faulty current probe inside of the converter module.

Wrong measured converter current can cause in wrong tube kV.
Replace converter module

E002 control A max

Description: Control current of the buck converter is over the limit.
The limit is fix by 250A and controlled with comparator N2D on the ZST2. Higher currents
will damaged the IGBT V3.

Cause 1: Arcing of the tube.

Tube arcing can cause heavy oscillation of the converter current (green curve).
Replace tube.

Cause 2: Broken H-bridge IGBTs V1 V2 in the converter module.

Shorted IGBT in the H-Bridge during an exposure will increase the inverter current in
between 50ms until it reach the limit. All following exposures with broken IGBTs V1 V2 will
stopped with error 009 (no tube kV)
Check the IGBTs by measuring the resistance of the IGBT gates. (see chapter 3 “IGBT
check-up”)
Replace complete converter module if an IGBT is broken.

Cause 3: Wrong tube calibration.

Too high tube current will cause in an overshoot of the inverter current.
Recalibration of the tube (see chapter 3.2.5 in the service manual)
Page 7 von 37 Troubleshooting / Error Handling EDITOR HFe

E003 tube mA max

Description: Tube mA limit detection on the ZST2 board
The limit is fix by 900mA and controlled with comparator N2C on the ZST2.
Cause 1: Arcing of the tube.
Tube arcing can cause heavy oscillation of the tube current (red curve).
Replace tube.
Cause 2: Defective high voltage cables or bad high voltage connection on tube or on transformer
side.
The measured tube current can go over the limit by shorted HV cables to ground.
Replace the defective HV cables. Clean the HV connectors and use new silicon oil or
grease.
Cause 3: Wrong tube calibration.
Too high filament current will cause in an overshoot of the tube current.
Recalibration of the tube (see chapter 3.2.5 in the service manual)

E004 tube +-kV diff

Description Asymmetry between negative and positive high voltage is larger than 20kV.
Larger difference between –kV and +kV can damage the high voltage transformer or the
tube.

Cause 1: Bad high voltage connection on tube or on transformer side.

If the contacts of the high voltage connectors are broken or loosen it will come to arcing
inside of this connections. This arcing will damage the connectors.
Try to clean the contacts or replace the contact pins. Check if only one silicon rubber
washer is used.

Cause 2: Defective high voltage cables

Replace the defective HV cables. Clean the HV connectors and use new silicon oil or
grease.

Cause 3: Defective high-voltage transformer

check the signals for the high voltage transformer
(see chapter 4 “High Voltage Transformer check-up”)

Cause 4: Faulty or loosen connection cable between high voltage transformer KB5 and the BUS2
board.
Check the connection between high voltage transformer (X2) and the BUS2 board (X9).
Check also the shielding of this cable. The shielding must be connected on both sides
Page 8 von 37 Troubleshooting / Error Handling EDITOR HFe

E005 tube +-mA diff

Description Asymmetry between negative and positive tube current is larger than 200mA.
Larger difference between –mA and +mA can damage the high voltage transformer.

Cause 2: Defective high voltage cables.

Short circuit inside of the HV cables to ground.

Page 9 von 37 Troubleshooting / Error Handling EDITOR HFe

E008 Unknown error

Extension: service mode
Description: This error message appears only if the service mode is activated on the ZST2.
Exposer time is limited to 20ms in service mode. Longer exposures times than 20ms are
causing this error.

Cause 1: Service mode is activated.

Check the position of the switch S1 on the ZST2 board. Service mode is activated when the
switch is in the lower position. “Service mode” is displayed during Generator start and is
indicated by a red LED V70 on the ZST2 board. Move the switch in the upper position.

E009 no Tube kV
Description: The generator firmware check 1ms after start of exposure if the output high voltage level is
≥ 10kV and after 30ms if the level is ≥ 50% of the set value.

Cause 1: Wrong tube calibration.

Too high tube currents will have effect on the tube kV and the rise time of the kV.
Recalibrate the tube (see chapter 3.2.5 in the service manual).

Cause 2: Defective IGBT module V1 V2 in the H-bridge of the converter module.

A shorted IGHT will shorten the output of the converter module and the primary current in
the HV-transformer is zero.
Check the IGBTs by measuring the resistance of the IGBT gates. (see chapter 3 “IGBT
check-up”)
Replace complete converter module if an IGBT is broken.

Cause 3: A blown fuse F1, F2, F3 or F4 on ANS2 board.

The IGBTs of the converter will not work properly. Maybe the error 009 will occur by
exposures with higher load.
Check the green LED V5, V29, V34 and V25 on the ANS2 board. These LEDs indicates the
driver voltage of each IGBT.
Check the fuses on the ANS2 board and exchange it.
Caution: When working on ANS2 board the generator must switched off. The capacitor
inside of the converter module needs 60s to discharge.
Exchange the ANS2 board If fuses blow again.
Page 10 von 37 Troubleshooting / Error Handling EDITOR HFe
