DEFLECTOR
Depending on cutting condit ions, e.g. wet grass. dry grass.
high wind velocity, etc.. it may be necessary to alter the angle
of deflection into the grassbox.
A A This is effected by loosening the thumbscrews (A} each side of
the machine and moving the deflector plate in the desired
direction - move upwards to throw the grass higher and further,
or downwards to throw the grass lower. Re-t ighten screws
after adjustment.

HEIGHT OF CUT
The cutting height is raised by turn ing the adjusting knob ( B) in
a clockwise direction. To cut lower. reverse procedure.
When adjusting for low cutting, do not set mower so low that
the weight of the machine is taken on the bottom blade instead
of the front roller. This wou ld affect cutting, and also place
excessive load on the engine.
STARTING AND OPERATI NG INSTRUCTIONS

BEFORE STARTING
READ THE SEPARATE ENGINE OPERATING INSTRUCTION
SH EET BEFORE SIARTING T HE ENGINE .

th e rear roller and the machi ne will move forward.

TO EMPTY GRASSCATCHER
Reduce engine speed to 'slow'.
Always stop the cutter by operat iflg the cutter clutch lever.
NEVER attempt to clear grass from the grasscatcher or cutter area if the cutter is rotating.

STOPPING THE ENGINE

Disengage the cutter clut ch.
Move throttle control to 'stop '.
ADJUSTMENTS

CUTTER SETTING
If unsatisfactory culling 1s ev1dent -chec these mg
occurs 1 will become necessary to ad1ust the cutter ci..... ~ 0
the bottom blade
The cutter IS correctly set 1hen rt LIGHTLY touches the bot om
blade along its FULL length. Hard bearing or uneven setting
causes excessive or uneven w ear on the culling edges and
also places undue load on the engine
Tocheckthesetting t11t the mower bac on the handles Holda
narrow strip of newspaper between the bottom blade and the
cutt er. while rotating the cutter carefully by hand The setting is
correct if the paper 1s cut or folded when tested at several
positions along the full length of the blade How ever. the cutter
must be free to rotate without binding.
Adjust ments can be made simply by the following procedure:-
1. Release the clamping nuts (C) both sides of mower.
2. To set cutter closer to the bottom bla~e. turn down (clockwise)
the adjusting screws (0 ) on each side until the cutter iust
contacts the bottom blade at both ends.
3. If cutter bears too hard on the blade. turn the ad1usting
screws bae<k at least a full turn and again carefully screw
down each. a little at a time. until correct contact is
achieved.
4. Retighten the clamping nuts securely.
5. Test setting with paper strip.
Resetting the cutter will affect the chain tightness and this
should be checked. Refer to chain ad1ustment. ·
If the paper test cannot be achieved satisfactorily, the blades
may be blunt or worn unev enly and sharpening will be neces-
sary.
This service is available through any Scott Bonnar branch or
authorised service dealer.

CUTTER CHAIN ADJUSTMENT

Slacken nut ( E). Move nylon chain adjuster to give correct
chain tension and ret1ghten nut.

CLUTCH AND DRUM CHAINS

Both chains are adjusted by loosening two nuts (G). and moving
the large chain sprocket upwards which tightens both chains
simultaneously. Hold the chain sprocket so that both chains
G are near taut and retighten nuts.
NOTE- Correctly tensioned chains should be slightly slack
and not tightly stretched.

CLUTCH CABLE ADJUSTMENT

The clutch operating pressure can be increased by releasing
the lock nut (A) and screwing the threaded adjuster ( B) outwards
a few turns and retightening lock nut. This is necessary only if
the unlikely condition of clutch slip wit h loss of propulsion
should occur.
MAINTENANCE

...
·.
LUBRICATION
The same g rade of 011 as used in the engine 1s suitable.
(A & B) These bearings are sealed and grease p acked
and do not require any add 1t1onal lubncat1on.
(C) Clutch thrust pad - apply OJI as required
(D) Front ro ller - app ly 011 to shaft as req uired.
A (E) Height ad1ust knob. Remove p lastic p lug - few
drops each season.
Drive c hains. Twice seasonally, use small brush and app ly
oil lig htly over c hains.

AIR CLEANER
For detailed cleaning instructions refer to the engine operating manual.
Clean frequently in dry and dusty cond itions as the filter can become clogged with fine grass particl es. Normally clean
twice seasonally .
Do not use the filt er element dry, as fine dirt will pass through the pores and into the en gine. After cleaning and re-o iling
the element, squeeze out as much oil as possible.

CARBURETTOR
No maintenance is required other than brushing away accumulated dirt and grass from the linkages.

GENERAL
Occasionally check that grass particles are not blocking the flow of coolin g air through the starter screen or engine fins.
Periodically check the nuts and bolts for tightness. Th e mower will give longer and more efficient service if kept clean of
grass and dirt build up.
CORRECT CUTTER SETTING IS VITAL
PROPER CARE MEANS LESS WEAR

1. RAGGED, UNEVEN CUTTING CAUSED BY POOR CUTTER SETTING.

If your mower 1s do mg a ragged uneven job of mowing rt does not necessarily ean ha he ades needs arp e g.. In
most instances 1t simply means that the cutter needs re-ad1ustmg
W ith use. the cutter and bottom blade gradually wear aw;ry from each other causing theg ass to be d agged through and
not cut cleanly. The blades maintain a better edge so long as they are very lightly touching

BOTTOM S~

The action of a Scott Bonnar reel type mower produces a scissor-like cut and therefore the cutter adjustment is all-
important to the finished appearance of the lawn.

2. SMOOTH, EVEN CUTTING EFFECTED BY CORRECT CUTTER SETTING.

From time to t ime depending on frequency of use and conditions of your lawn area, your mower will require adjustment
of the cutter setting. You will benefit by becoming conversant with the simple procedure required to maintain peak
cutting efficiency.
THE CORRECT PROCEDURE FOR CUTTER ADJUSTMENT IS SET OUT IN THIS BOOK UNDER
"CUTTER SETTING'.'

3. THE FRONT ROLLER HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ADJUSTMENT OF THE

CUTTING BLADES.
It merely serves as the adjustment for HEIGHT of cut, allowing the cutter to pass across the grass at the desired height
of cut.
