MY STUDENT-LED DISCUSSION IN “LIFE AND WORKS OF JOSE RIZAL”

Sem. Lawrence Mari M. Lanon – 2nd Year (SVD)

Props:
1. Backdrop – Featuring a portrait of a King, it means that the program is sponsored by
the
Crown. It also bears the coat-of-arms of Spain and the Dominican Order.
(OP)

2. Radio Libertas – Is originally a newspaper published by the Dominicans in their

press in
UST from 1899 – 1918. I devised it as a Radio program with a
Dominican host.

3. The Dominican Habit – I wore the Dominican Habit to indicate that the host is from
the OP. The Habit is authentic because I am a member of
the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary (Third Order
Dominican).

4. Naval Uniform of the Capitan General – My Dad wore the costume I used when I
joined an Oratorical Contest way back in
2017, that is my attire because my piece is a speech
of Queen Elizabeth’s Father, King George VI.

5. Background Music - Respectfully remembering our Spanish Culture and

Heritage, I
played the “Marcha Real” (National Anthem of Spain –
former anthem of this archipelago) when the Governor
General entered the scene.

Roles:
1. Fray Lorenzo Maria Nicolas Lanon y Azagra Malto as Host, Radio Libertas

ating bansa noong taong 1849.

Lubhang Kagalang-galang, Don Narciso Claveria y Zaldua, Gobernador
y Capitan General de las Islas Filipinas at Autor ng Claveria Decree of
1849 ( The Himno Nacional de Espana will be played while Daddy is
entering the scene)

Magandang Umaga po, Señor Gobernador

DADDY: Buenos Dias, España!

Maganda Umaga, Filipinas!

Lawrence: Ayuuuuun. Ganun naman pala, Señor Gobernador. Malaking bagay po ang
inyong ipinagawa at ipinag-utos. May tama po kayo! Hahahaha

(Short interlude)

Hehe
Stay safe, wear your mask po haha.

DADDY: Maraming Salamat din Señor Padre at mga tagasubaybay. (Marcha Real
play)

THE RIZAL HOME

The Rizal Residence was a two-story building, rectangular in shape, built
of adobe stone and hard-woods, and roofed with red tiles.

A GOOD AND MIDDLE - CLASS FAMILY

The Rizal family belonged to the principalia, a town aristocracy in
Spanish Philippines. They owned a carriage which was a status symbol of
the illustrados (composed of native-born intellectuals and cut across
ethnolinguistic and raciallines—Indios, Insulares, and mestizos, among
others). They also owned a library, the largest in Calamba, consisting of
more than 1000 volumes.

HOME LIFE OF THE RIZALS

The Rizal Children were taught and trained:
1. To love God
2. To behave well
3. To be obedient
4. To respect people, especially the old folks.
5. They believed in the maxim: “Spare the rod and spoil the child”

Who can explain the maxim, or principle “SPARE THE ROD AND SPOIL THE CHILD”?

THE RIZAL CHILDREN

1. Saturnina – oldest of the Rizal children, nicknamed Neneng
2. Paciano – older brother and confidant of Jose Rizal, he was
immortalized
by Jose Rizal in his first novel Noli Me Tangere as Pilosopo Tasio
3. Narcisa – her pet name was Sisa
4. Olimpia – Ypia was her pet name
5. Lucia – she married Mariano Herbosa, the nephew of Fr. Casanas; he
was denied a Christian burial because he was the brother-in-law of Jose
Rizal
6. Maria – her nickname was Biang
7. Jose – the great Filipino hero, his nickname was Pepe
(WHY PEPE?) From the Old Missal – S. Joseph PP. (Pater Putativus)
8. Concepcion – her pet name was Concha, she died of sickness at 3; her
death was Jose Rizal’s first sorrow
9. Josefa – her pet name was Panggoy, she died an old maid at the age of
80.
