Operation Snow Leopard hero’s wife and
mom receive posthumous Maha Vir Chakra
NEW DELHI: Colonel Bikumalla San-
tosh Babu, the commanding officer of
the 16 Bihar regiment who led from
the front against the brutal Chinese
attack in Galwan Valley in June last
year, was on Tuesday posthumously
awarded Maha Vir Chakra by Presi-
dent Ram Nath Kovind for displaying
“exemplary courage” during the
clash.
Babu’s wife B Santoshi and mother
Manjula received the award at a cere-
mony attended by Prime Minister
Narendra Modi and defence minister
Rajnath Singh.
Maha Vir Chakra is the nation’s
second-highest military award for
acts of gallantry in the presence of
the enemy. Four other soldiers, Naib
Subedar Nuduram Soren, Havildar
(Gunner) K Palani, Naik Deepak
Singh and Sepoy Gurtej Singh, who
also laid down their lives valiantly
fighting the Chinese troops in the
Galwan Valley clash on June 15 last
year, have been conferred with the
Vir Chakra awards posthumously.

NEW YORK: Actors Nawazuddin Sid-
diqui, Vir Das and series Aarya, led
by Sushmita Sen, could not register a
win at the 2021 International Emmy
Awards but the comedian said it was
“an honour” to represent the country
at the awards ceremony. Siddiqui,
who was nominated in the best per-
formance by an actor category for his
Netflix movie Serious Men, lost out to
Scottish actor David Tennant .
While Das’ Netflix comedy special
Vir Das: For India lost out to Call My
Agent Season 4 from France in the
comedy category. The comedian,
who has been in news back home for
his I Come From Two Indias mono-
logue, said he loved the French
drama. Das has received praise as
well as police complaints for his
monologue in Washington recently.

India registers 7,579
new Covid-19 cases,
lowest in 543 days
NEW DELHI: India logged 7,579 new
coronavirus infections, the lowest in
543 days, taking the country’s total
tally of Covid-19 cases to 3,45,26,480,
while the active cases were the lowest
in 536 days, according to the Union
Health Ministry data updated on
Tuesday. The death toll climbed to
4,66,147 with 236 fresh fatalities,
according to the data updated at 8
am. The daily rise in new coronavirus
infections has been below 20,000 for
46 straight days and less than 50,000
daily new cases have been reported
for 149 consecutive days now.
The active cases declined to
1,13,584 and comprise 0.33 per cent of
the total infections, the lowest since
March 2020, while the national Cov-
id19 recovery rate was recorded at
98.32%, the highest since March
2020, the ministry said.
A decrease of 4,859 cases has been
recorded in the active Covid-19 case-
load in a span of 24 hours. The daily
positivity rate was recorded at 0.79
per cent. It has been less than two per
cent for last 50 days. PTI

Winds give Delhi its best
air quality in 22 days
NEW DELHI: Delhi’s air quality improved from
“very poor” to “poor” and the 24-hour average
air quality index (AQI) read 290 on Tuesday with
favourable wind speed, up to 25 kmph, aiding
dispersion of pollutants over the last two days.
This is the second best 24-hour average AQI
reading this month since November 1 (281).
Delhi has seen “very poor” or “severe” air quality
on the rest of the days.
Officials at the India Meteorological Depart-
ment said winds gusting up to 20 kmph on Sun-
day and 25 kmph on Monday led to a marked
improvement in the air quality and visibility.
Local surface wind speed will be relatively low
for the next three days and reduce dispersion of
pollutants. Surface winds are likely to pick up
from November 27. PTI
DU to put out spl cut-off
list for UG courses today
NEW DELHI: Delhi University will release a cut-
off list under a special drive to fill vacant seats
in different colleges on Wednesday, according
to officials. The university had sought data of
vacant seats from the colleges on Saturday.
Some colleges have not yet sent the data, said
an official, adding that the institutions can send
in the numbers by 1 pm on Wednesday.
Before this, Delhi University had announced
a cut-off under a special drive on November 13.
The university had not shared the admission
data for the list. Till the fifth cut-off, 74,667 stu-
dents had secured admission. The colleges will
release a merit list and approve candidates on
the basis of vacant seats. The candidates can
apply under the second special drive on
November 25 and 26. PTI

Driverless train ops to
begin on Nov 25: DMRC
NEW DELHI: In another milestone for the DMRC,
‘driverless train operations’ on 57-km Pink
Line of the Delhi Metro is all set to be inaugu-
rated on November 25, officials said on Tues-
day.
Union minister for housing and urban
affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri and Delhi transport
minister Kailash Gahlot will inaugurate it via
video-conferencing, slated to be held at 11.30
am, the DMRC said.
India’s first-ever driverless train operations
on the Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line was inaugu-
rated on December 28 last year by Prime Min-
ister Narendra Modi. The DMRC officials then
had said the Pink Line, spanning Majlis Park to
Shiv Vihar, would also have driverless opera-
tions by mid-2021. PTI

At least 45 people
killed in Bulgaria
bus blaze
SOFIA: At least 45 people, including a
dozen minors, were killed after a bus
caught fire south of the Bulgarian
capital early Tuesday, officials said. A
cause has yet to be determined but
officials believe a fire broke out on
board and the bus crashed into
guardrails. There were no other vehi-
cles involved in the accident, which
occurred around 2 am (0000 GMT)
on a highway about 40km from Sofia,
near the village of Bosnek. “Of the
victims... 12 in total were under the
age of 18,” national police chief Stan-
imir Stanev said. He told bTV televi-
sion that 45 of the 52 people on the
bus were killed. “The driver died
immediately so there was no one able
to open the doors,” he added. AFP

id-19 vaccines for children aged five
to 11 on Monday, becoming one of a
handful of countries to inoculate chil-
dren so young as it seeks to ward off

summer, the Jewish state experi-
enced an upsurge in coronavirus
infections, fuelled by the Delta vari-
ant, and launched one of the earliest
campaigns for booster shots. As
infections start to creep up again,
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has
said the country is experiencing a
“children’s wave” with about half of
the recently confirmed cases among
children below the age of 11, he wrote

Buddhist teacher, philosopher and
tulku of the Drukpa (Dragon) lineage
of Tibetan Buddhism.
The event was organised by the
Child Education Society (Regd.), the
apex body of all Bal Bharati Public
Schools in the country. The theme of
the event was ‘Serenity is not free-
dom from the storm but peace amid
the storm’. The enlightening session
marked the first public event which
was held on BBPS premises since the
closure of the schools due to the Cov-
id-19 pandemic.
Stringent measures were taken to
ensure that the Covid-19 protocols
were appropriately followed in all

Little Flowers Group of Schools
(LGGS) hosted the 9th edition of its
annual inter-school competition
titled Memorabilia 2021 at the
national level. The chief guest for the
event was Dr Jitendra Nagpal.
This event is organised annually in
the divine memory of school’s
founder and director Dhanraj Patel
who was a great educationist, philan-
thropist, psychologist and social
activist who believed in the power of
empathy and self-care.
Around 100 schools and more than
500 students from all over India par-
ticipated enthusiastically in that
competition and expressed their
commitment towards promoting
mental health and well-being.
The theme of the competition was
‘From Stigma to Smile’. So, all the
events were based on the importance
of mental well-being.

Emphasising the illusionary nature
of the world, which is marked by
impermanence, Rinpoche high-
lighted the importance of ‘CLAW’
which signifies compassion, love,
awareness, and wisdom. He also laid
stress on detachment to gain freedom
from the cycle of birth and re-birth.
In the invigorating QA session, he
addressed an array of queries related
to existence and happiness. Rinpoche
also shared useful tips for spiritual
sustenance such as “It’s okay to be
not okay sometimes.”. The event con-
cluded with an eloquent vote of
thanks proposed by principal LV Seh-
gal and CES joint secretary.

PARIS: Nearly half the world’s popula-
tion suffer from poor nutrition linked
to too much or not enough food, a
global assessment said on Tuesday
with wide-ranging impacts on health
and the planet.
The Global Nutrition Report
(GNR), a yearly survey and analysis of
the latest data on nutrition and
related health issues, found that 48%
of people currently eat either too lit-
tle or too much – resulting in them
being overweight, obese or under-
weight. At current rates, the report
finds, the world will fail to meet eight
out of nine nutrition targets set by the
World Health Organization for 2025.
These include reducing child wast-
ing (when children are too thin for
their height) and child stunting
(when they are too short for their
quarter of all adult deaths,” Chair of
the GNR’s Independent Expert Group
Renata Micha told AFP.
“Our global findings show that our
diets have not improved over the last
ten years and are now a major threat
to people’s health and to the planet.”

This year’s GNR is the first to look at
global diets and how food choices are
affecting people and the planet.
It finds people are failing to con-
sume enough health-promoting
foods like fruits and vegetables, par-
ticularly in lower-income countries.
Higher-income countries had the
highest intake of harmful foods like
red meat, dairy and sugary drinks.
Consumption of harmful foods is on
the rise, the report found, with red

rienced drifting off to sleep during a
lengthy bus journey. But would you
pay to do just that? That’s the idea
behind a novel tour bus business in
Hong Kong billing itself as a possible
cure for insomnia.
On a recent sunny Sunday after-
noon about 70 passengers ranging
from excitable infants to silver-haired
retirees got on board two double deck-
ers plying a “route to nowhere”.
One was a “quiet bus” where people
could sleep, the second was a more
traditional sight-seeing option.
The 85-km trip started in a bustling
urban district and made its way on
coastal highways to the city’s airport.
While some passengers enjoyed the
view, many adorned ear plugs and face
masks and were soon fast asleep for
the five-hour trip which includes stops
at various scenic sites.
“I think everyone has experienced
not being able to sleep at home but
they can sleep very soundly on a bus
as the bus swings and vibrates,” pas-
senger and quiet bus convert Ho Wai
told AFP during the trip.
“Every Hong Konger has stress
from work, from affording a flat, from
life and now we can’t go travelling,” he
added, referencing strict coronavirus
quarantine rules.
Fellow passenger Matthew Chick
said he had been having trouble sleep-
ing in recent weeks and decided to
give the journey a go. But he struggled

of ‘planetary defence’ to be launched today

WASHINGTON: In the 1998 Hollywood
blockbuster Armageddon, Bruce
Willis and Ben Affleck race to save
the Earth from being pulverized by
an asteroid. While the Earth faces no
such immediate danger, Nasa plans
to crash a spacecraft travelling at a
speed of 24,000 kph into an asteroid
next year in a test of “planetary
defence.” The Double Asteroid Redi-
rection Test is to determine whether
this is an effective way to deflect the
course of an asteroid should one
threaten the Earth in the future.
Nasa provided details of the DART
mission, which carries a price tag of
$330 million, in a briefing recently
“Although there isn’t a currently
known asteroid that’s on an impact
course with the Earth though we do
know that there is a large population
of near-Earth asteroids out there,”
said Lindley Johnson, Nasa’s Planet-
ary Defence Officer.
“The key to planetary defence is
finding them well before they are an
impact threat,” Johnson said. “We
don’t want to be in a situation where
an asteroid is headed towards Earth
and then have to test this capability.”
The DART spacecraft is scheduled
to be launched aboard a SpaceX Fal-
con 9 rocket at 10:20 pm Pacific time
on November 23 (11:20 am IST on

The DART spacecraft, which will
weigh 1,210 pounds at the time of
impact, will not “destroy” the aster-
oid, Chabot said. “It’s just going to
give it a small nudge,” she said. “It’s
going to deflect its path around the
larger asteroid.” “It’s only going to be
a change of about 1% in that orbital
period,” Chabot said.

said. The amount of deflection will
depend to a certain extent on the
composition of Dimorphos and scien-
tists are not entirely certain how
porous the asteroid is.
Dimorphos is the most common
type of asteroid in space and is some
4.5 billion years old, Chabot said. “It’s
a fine grain mixture of rock and
metal together, ” she said.

WASHINGTON: The launch of the
James Webb Space Telescope, which
astronomers hope will herald a new
era of discovery, has been delayed
until December 22 after an accident
at its launch facility in French Gui-
ana, Nasa said on Monday.
Technicians were preparing to
attach the $10 billion observatory to a
launch vehicle adapter, used to fix it
to the upper stage of an Ariane 5
rocket.
“A sudden, unplanned release of a
clamp band –-which secures Webb to
the launch vehicle adapter – caused a
vibration throughout the observa-
tory,” the US space agency said in a
blog post, adding that the incident
occurred while operations were tak-
ing place “under Arianespace overall
responsibility.”
Arianespace is the French launch
company contracted to launch the
telescope. A Nasa-led team is now
investigating how it happened and
testing “to determine with certainty
the incident did not damage any com-
ponents.” The space telescope was
originally supposed to launch on
December 18, so for now the delay is
only a few days.
Researchers want to use the Webb
space telescope, the largest and most
powerful ever built, to look back in
time over 13.5 billion years to see the
first stars and galaxies that formed, a
few hundred million years after the
Big Bang. A key feature is its ability to
detect infrared, as by the time the
light from the first objects reaches
our telescopes, it has shifted toward
the red end of the electromagnetic
spectrum as a result of the universe’s

Rahul out of NZ series, Surya added to team

KANPUR: India opener KL Rahul was
on Tuesday ruled out of the two-Test
series against New Zealand due to a
muscle strain in his left thigh.

begin here from Thursday.
“Team India batsman KL Rahul
has sustained a muscle strain on
his left thigh and has been ruled
out of the upcoming two-match Test
series against New Zealand,” BCCI
said in a release.
“He will now undergo rehabilita-
tion at NCA in preparation for the
series against South Africa scheduled
next month,” the release added.
Rahul was missing from the Indian
team’s customary practice session,
attended by almost all the players at
the Green Park stadium on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old Rahul has featured
in 40 Tests, scoring 2321 runs at an
average of 35.16. His highest score
was 199 that came against England in
Chennai in 2016.
Shubman Gill was seen opening
the batting along with Mayank Agar-
wal during the team’s net session as
Cheteshwar Pujara, the vice captain
for the series-opener, also batted.
There is a strong possibility that
either Shreyas Iyer or Suryakumar
Yadav will make his Test debut and
bat in the middle-order.
Young batter Shubhman was
expected to bat in the middle order
but now in the absence of Rahul, he
will be asked to play in his usual

KANPUR: It wasn’t an alteration in
technique but a fearless approach
that has brought the joy back in bat-
ting for Cheteshwar Pujara, who won’t
put undue pressure of performance
on himself.
Pujara insisted that not having a
Test hundred in three years doesn’t
perturb him as long as his 80s and 90s
are coming in winning causes. Did he
think that his aggressive approach in
England Tests after facing criticism
for ‘lack of intent’, helped him?
“Yes, I feel so. When it comes to per-
forming, the mindset was a little dif-
ferent but when it comes to technique
I don’t think there was a major change
in technique. It was just the approach
and I was a little fearless which helps,”
Pujara said.
He did admit in a roundabout man-
ner that he was putting too much
pressure on himself earlier, which has
changed since he scored 91 and 61 at
Leeds and Oval at a decent clip. “You
don’t need to put too much pressure
on yourself and just try and go there
and enjoy the game rather than wor-
rying too much about what’s going
around. That was the mindset during
England series. So far preparation has
been good and experiences of playing
in Indian conditions will help in the
next couple of Tests,” the senior bat-
ter, who will be vice captain for the
series-opener, said.
For Pujara, lack of Test hundred
since January, 2019 isn’t a problem.
“As far as my hundred is concerned,
