ROLE OF YOUTH IN PREPAREDNESS AND MANAGEMENT

On the theory of Valeska Henze “On the concept of youth”, youth in a broad definition is a
period of life in between childhood and adulthood. It is described as a time of experimenting with
roles and identities, still void on the burden of social norms and obligations. During this process
of social integration young people find themselves in a complex social system, composed of such
elements as tradition, history social demands, hopes and individual future prospects, all of which
they have to incorporate into a coherent picture in order to build a proper foundation of their
personal life.
In the Philippines we have Red Cross Youth as one of the six major services of the
Philippine Red Cross. Its mission is to educate and empower the children and youth in the spirit
of Red Cross through constructive trainings and effective leadership, and provide opportunities for
directing and harnessing their energy and idealism into worthwhile humanitarian activities.
4 Major Objectives of the Red Cross Youth

1. Inculcation of Humanitarian Values - the organization believes that the early

development of humanitarian leaders lies in the inculcation of humanitarian values
among its youth members.
2. Instill the Practice of a Healthy Lifestyle - build a healthy community through youth
participation and involvement in health promotion and education towards a stronger
nation.
3. Enhance Youth Leadership Skills through Service Delivery - to be active in
community development by leading the delivery of Red Cross services in their capacity
as volunteers.
4. Advocate National / International Friendship - to promote camaraderie and unity,
mutual respect and the spirit of international brotherhood amidst socio-cultural diversity.
The Red Cross Youth Pledge
As a Youth Member of the premier humanitarian organization, I pledge to alleviate human
suffering, protect life and dignity, to be a responsible citizen of the Republic of the Philippines, to
conform with the objectives and policies of the Philippine Red Cross, its seven fundamental
principles: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and
Universality and to be at all times be in the service for the suffering humanity.
By involving youth in disaster preparedness and recovery efforts, youth-serving agencies
can help to not only increase youth awareness of particular hazards, but can also enhance that they
openly discuss how to adequately protect their families and loved ones and understand how to seek
help should their community be affected. Youth can play a range of roles in youth preparedness
programs and play a crucial role in recovery efforts. They may assist communities in mapping
their risk and protective factors or may hold leadership positions within the programs. Some
additional roles include;
1. Sharing the message: Youth can help share the message of disaster preparedness
2. Acting as change makers; Youth can act as change makers by sharing information
they learned in youth preparedness programs and helping parents and communities
to prepare for disaster, for example by developing disaster or disaster preparation
kit.
3. Bringing Creativity: Youth can bring creative and resourceful ideas to disaster
preparedness efforts.
