2) Task to be done:
To interpret t chi-square test or T test in SPSS.
Question -01:
Educators are always looking for novel ways in which to teach statistics to undergraduates as part of a non-
statistics degree course (e.g., psychology). With current technology, it is possible to present how-to guides
for statistical programs online instead of in a book. However, different people learn in different ways. An
educator would like to know whether gender (male/female) is associated with the preferred type of learning
medium (online vs. books). Therefore, we have two nominal variables: Gender (male/female) and Preferred
Learning Medium (online/books).
1. Considering the above case what would be the null and alternate hypothesis? ( 2marks)
2. Name the variable that would be use and what will be their measure. ( Names of the variable could
be as per the student preference) ( 3 marks)
Ans 2) Gender and preferred_learning_Medium will be the two variables.
The measure for gender is nominal and for preferred learning mode is also nominal,
Ans 3) 1. Click on Analyze> Descriptive Statistics > Crosstabs from the upper menu.
3.Now transfer gender variable to the row and preferred learning medium variable to the column space.
4.Click on the statistics option presented on the same window. A new window of crosstabs statistics will
appear.
5.select the chi square test and phi and cramer’s v test.
Interpretation :
This table signifies that both males and females prefer to learn using online materials versus books.
Interpretation:
We can see here that χ (1) = 0.487, p = .485. This tells us that there is no statistically significant
association between Gender and Preferred Learning Medium; that is, both Males and Females
equally prefer online learning versus books.
Interpretation
Both the Phi and Cramer's V tests signifies strength of association. We can see that the strength of
association between the variables is very weak.
