Subject Name: INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICAL ANALYSIS         Subject Code: BAP261

1) Aim/Overview of the practical:

 To Understand the concept of Non-Parametric test i.e. Chi-Square in Statistics.

 Also, to enable students to apply Chi-Square test.

2) Task to be done:

To implement chi-square test in SPSS.

Problem-01:

In the sample dataset, respondents were asked their gender and whether or not they were a cigarette
smoker. There were three answer choices: Nonsmoker, Past smoker, and Current smoker. Suppose we want
to test for an association between smoking behavior (nonsmoker, current smoker, or past smoker) and
gender (male or female) using a Chi-Square Test of Independence (we'll use α = 0.05).

Consider the following data:

3) Steps for experiment/practical:

STEP 1: Open a new file in SPSS. Enter the data as given.

STEP 2: Click on ‘Analyze’, then select Descriptive Statistics under the drop down
and select Crosstabs.
STEP 3: A window appears, move variable gender to rows and smoking variable to
columns and then click on statistics.
STEP 4: After clicking on statistics, a window appears select chi square and phi and
Cramer’s V and click continue.
STEP 5: Now select cells, a window appears select rows, columns and total and
click continue.
STEP 6: Now click on format, choose ascending and click continue.
STEP 7: Now click OK. Output window appears.

expected count is 1.59.
5) Learning outcomes (What I have learnt):

1. Got to learn about chi square test.

2. Learnt how to use crosstabs.
