1.

What were the arguments for the use of candlelight instead of electric light
when reading a book?

ANSWER:
The author or narrator of the essay seems to refuse the idea that the electric light
is preferable to use rather than the candle. Reading the passage of the essay, the
author gave a rather poetic and deep explanation showing emotions of why nothing can
compare to reading a book than using a candle light, not the arc lamp, electric bulb and
other things. The atmosphere and feeling that the candle light can bring stands out from
the rest. Hence, the author cannot accept the idea of using other source of light other
than the candle in which he describes as the "star-like candle".

What were the assertions?

Some assertions to support this idea are taken from the essay as "They talk of the
candle-power of an electric bulb. What do they mean? It cannot have the faintest
glimmer of the real power of my candle. It would be as right to express, in the same
inverted and foolish comparison, the worth of "those delicate sisters, the Pleiades." In
this assertion, it is clearly an indication that the author disagrees with the idea of using
another source of light other than his precious candle light. Another assertion is from the
line
"As the bed-book itself should be a sort of night-light, to assist its illumination, coarse
lamps are useless. " and "That is why nothing can compare with the intimacy of candle-
light for a bed-book." In these lines, he makes his final conclusion about his point of
view.

What were the examples that were used as proof?

Aside from the assertions taken from the essay, some examples that can be used as
proof that the narrator did mention some certain accounts like "No other light follows so
intimately an author's most ghostly suggestion." "The candle for me, tiny, mortal, warm,
and brave, a golden lily on a silver stem!". In these examples he compares the candle
light as to a rather unchangeable effect of using the candle light in reading bed books.

2. Were you persuaded by these arguments? Why or why not?

The arguments aroused by the narrator in the essay is quite convincing specifically it is
appealing to the senses as a wide reader who likes to feel the emotion of what they are
reading. It can be accepted that the author used some distinct figurative languages and
also some imagery in the essay to appear as if it were to be imagined or tangible to the
eyes of the readers that is why it is considered as an essay that can persuade its
audience.

3. What kind of books does the author think should not be bed books? Why?
It is mentioned in the latter part of the essay about the books in the author's point of
view which are not for bed books. In the lines "Such books, and France's "Isle of
Penguins," are not disturbing as bed-books." The author described it in the lines "They
resolve one's agitated and outraged soul, relieving it with some free expression for the
accusing and questioning thoughts engendered by the day's affairs." It is rather
considered as mind-questioning books which will leave the reader's with deep thoughts
as well as some negative thinking such as the mentioned “accusing" which are not good
as the soul of our body at night time should be at peace and serenity.

Do you agree with him? Why or why not?

As a reader of some literary works as well as modern books produced in our era, I do
agree with him. The world that we live in today is in a state in which more of crisis,
societal problems and others are common and that it is quite heavy to digest specially
during the night time. Our mortal bodies are exhausted due to all days work and we
need some time to rest before going to bed so I do agree with the author that the genre
or the theme of the bed book should not be about negative thinking as well as those
containing sensitive and rather heavy topics.

4. Did you like the essay? Why or why not?

This essay did not just talk about some famous books written in the 18th and 19th
century but it also tackles about simple arguments like candle light and light bulb, what
books to read during the day and night as well as some citations or book reviews about
certain novels and literary works as well as the authors. A simple yet unique essay
containing the emotion and the insights of various books which I really liked about it. It
has the diversity as well as the feeling like there is a friend recommending and criticizing
some books.

5. What can the modern reader get from reading this essay?

Nowadays there are a lot of literary works like books, e-book, documents and other
forms of writing that are being published each day. Such scenario affects the taste as
well as the themes, genre and trends of the readers of our generation. This essay can
affect the way the reader reads the books or is doing a book review. They can read the
mentioned literary works in the essay and explore the works of the old age. Another
things is that most of the people today use night lights like lamps, light bulbs and other
source of electrical lights which are more convenient and clear for them to read.
Considering the argument that the author has created, it can influence the readers to try
to use candle light for a change and see if there is a difference in feeling.
