The bar chart shows the change in the population in four countries from 1950 to 2000 and also
gives the data of the predicted figures in 2050.

Overall, the percentage of population in India and USA inclined and this figure showed a fall in
China and Japan. As per the projection, the population rate would go down further in all countries
except India which would rise and in the USA it is expected to remain same.

15% was the proportion of population in India in 1950 which was triple the rate of population in
Japan and as per the estimation it would touch about 21% in 2050 after showing a considerable
growth  of 4% in 2000.The population rate in USA in 1950 was 5% lower than in India. After
showing a marginal rise to 13% in 2000, it is projected to remain same till 2050.

In 1950, China had the highest population percentage which was just over a quarter. This rate fell to
about 24% in 2000 and by 2050, it is forecast to drop significantly to about 19%.  The percentage of
population in Japan went down by 1% in 2000 from 5% in 1950 and this rate is anticipated to fall
further to 3% in 2050.

I am Alex, a resident of Cox Town, Bangalore. I am writing in connection with the decision
of the council to close the playground and also to request you to reconsider the same.

The playground in our area is the only leisure facility available and most of the children
gather in the evenings for playing various games. However, since the past two months,
most of the parents are hesitating to send their children to the playground in the evening
because of some concerns.

Firstly, the playground is not well lit and it is extremely difficult for children to play after
6.30pm and some residents have also started discarding waste in the corner end of the
ground which has resulted in a stench. Besides, an incident of a child being attacked by
stray dogs a few weeks ago in the playground has also added onto the fear

Rather than closing the playground, I believe the council should undertake some measures
to put an end to these problems by employing a security guard and repairing the faulty
lights. Because of the fear of being caught, residents would stop dumping the waste and the
presence of an adult would drive away the stray dogs and the children can safely play in the
ground.

Looking forward to a positive response.

Yours faithfully,

Alex Thomas

Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an

unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and
improve such situations.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Many people sometimes face the dilemma of situations in which they must either
accept what happens or try to make some changes. While some feel that acceptance
is the optimal approach, I agree with those who believe that we should strive to
better these situations.

On the one hand, it could be argued that people should be satisfied with what life brings
to them. Advocates of this opinion argue that change is risky and requires massive
effort. By accepting unfavourable situations, at least people may have a better sense
of security, and this, psychologically, increases their happiness to some extent.
For example, when a person tries to find another job, there is no guarantee that the new
job can offer them more satisfaction. Also, in a few serious cases, such as wars
or severe economic downturns, it could be hazardous and virtually impossible for
an individual to change the situation.

However, I side with those who believe that people should do their best to move up in
life. First, it is apparent that the advancement of human civilization has been made
by those who strongly believe that there are always ways to make their lives better.
Without this spirit, great inventions like light bulbs, electricity, computers or the
Internet could have never come to life. Furthermore, the most compelling
argument is that only by solving the existing problems, not by simply accepting them,
can people discover their abilities, improve their skills and live their lives to the fullest.
There have been instances of entrepreneurs, sports athletes or scientists in many
countries who achieved stunning success thanks to their never give up
mindset and continued effort. Therefore, I believe that in most cases, the effort to
better unfavourable situations would be rewarded.

In conclusion, although in rare cases, making changes sometimes seems quite

dangerous, in the vast majority of instances, not only does this action bring about great
success, but also helps people identify their potential and live their lives in a more
meaningful way. Therefore, on balance, I believe that striving to change unhappy
situations is a much more sensible approach.
