Tutorial Sheet No. 1

1. Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6orsmFndx_o and Study ‘sketchpad’ and its

characteristics. Then watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgUSsXdLjvc and
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPsFPmgT0YM . Do some research and write down in a page
about the technology Computer Aided Design.

2. Write down the parametric equation of a straight line passing through two points (1,2,3)
and (-4 0,-1). Reparametrize this equation between the parametric limits (4 -1).

3. Find out the Algebraic and Geometric coefficients of a degenerate cubic Hermite curve of
zero length located at (2, 3.5, -12).

4. Find the Algebraic and Geometric coefficients of a parametric cubic curve lying in x=10
𝑑𝑧
plane and whose geometric characteristics at u=0 are (10 2 2) and 𝑑𝑦 =2 ; at u=0.5 are (10 6
𝑑𝑧
6 ) and u=1 are (10 10 2) and 𝑑𝑦 =-2.

5. Using the geometric coefficients found in Exercise 4., derive a new set with the only
difference that components of tangents vector 𝒑𝒖𝟎 are multiplied by 4. Calculate the
corresponding algebraic coefficients and plot the curve in three parametric space as well
as in object space.

6. Draw and discuss the shape of the Hermite curve if:

a. Stating point and end points are same as well as the tangent vectors at the start
point and end point are also same.
b. Stating point and end points are different and the tangent vectors at the start and
end are null vectors.
c. Stating point and end points are different and the tangent vectors at start and end
are having the direction of (𝒑𝟏 − 𝒑𝟎 ) but their magnitude is different.
d. Stating point and end points are same and the tangent vectors at the start and end
points are given as (1 0 0 ) and (-1 0 0) respectively.

7. A Hermite curve is defined as follows:

1 2 0 5
𝑝(𝑢) = (2) 𝑢3 + (2) 𝑢2 + (2) 𝑢 + (6) , 𝑢 ∈ [0 1]
3 0 0 7
a. Find out its geometric coefficients.
b. Reverse parametrize the curve and find out the algebraic coefficients of the
resulting
