PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This study presents the introduction, background of the study, theoretical

framework, and conceptual framework, statement of the problem, hypothesis,

scope and limitations, significance of the study, and definition of terms.

Introduction

In this new normal, one of the most affected is the education system. We

now have distance learning. Different types, such as modular, online, and flexible

learning, challenge the student and teacher. This new mode of learning is such a

challenge to the student. The teacher will expect their student to pass all the

needed requirements on time, which pressures most of the students. However,

the Junior and senior students under the education department still manage to be

dean listers even though we have this new way of learning.

Background of the Study

In India, a study conducted by Dr. Sanjay Kumar revealed that out of 129

students who participated in the survey, only 38% of the respondents spent 10-

15 hours per week for self-study, 8% spent 15-20 hours. At the same time, the

majority is 48% which students are spending less than 10 hours per week on

8
Republic of the Philippines
UNIVERSITY OF RIZAL SYSTEM
Taytay, Rizal

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

their self-study. Also, most of the respondents did not revise their lecture notes

on the same day, and it is 58% out of 129 respondents. Figure 5 shows that the

majority of high percentage students ask questions frequently in class.

These data indicated that most of the students do not ideally follow

effective learning habit. The average time spent by the majority of students in

self-study per week is less than expected. The majority of the students do not

have to revise their lectures on the same day. Students sometimes collaborate in

their assignments even if they are marked as an individual. Change of

environment affects the students' grades, so most first-year students have their

first-semester percentage low. So, there is a need for the instructor to motivate

the students to adopt effective learning habit. Also, the low percentage scoring

students need to be motivated more than a higher percentage of scoring.

Probable reasons found out from the survey for the students getting lower

percentage are not sufficient time spent on self-study, not revising lecture,

missing classes, and not asking questions when confused.

Learning habits is Study skills, academic skill, or study strategies are

approaches applied to learning. Study skills are an array of skills that tackle the

process of organizing and taking in new information, retaining information, or

dealing with assessments.

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

Therefore, the researcher of this study aims to identify the learning habit of

the junior and senior consistent college of education dean lister awardees in this

new mode of learning who enrolled in this academic year 2021-2022 at the

University of Rizal Taytay Campus.

Theoretical Framework

This study is based on Pergis, L. et al. (2015) study titled Study Habits

of Scholars.

Pergis, L. et al. (2015) stated that study habits fill a significant role in

academic studies of the scholars as they identify the scholar's study habits.

Pergis, L. et al. prove this claim as the scholars used it in maintaining their high

grades to maintain their academic scholarship.

A student who does not employ study techniques is most likely to perform

below average. Good study habits help the students with their assignments,

tests, and exam, getting good grades at the end of the term or semester (Agba

2013 as cited in Cuevas M. 2018).

Study habits are not a habit that can be acquired on a whim. It needs a

well-planned and deliberate pattern of study that needs the students' consistency

10
Republic of the Philippines

Taytay, Rizal

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

to understand the academic lesson and pass the examination (Bashir & Mattoo,

2012, as cited in Nisa Khan Z. 2016).

Proper environment, feedback, and guidance of parents and teachers develop an

individual personality balanced. In school, the teacher will guide students to mold

their study habits. At home, it is the parent's turn to guide their children. This duty

is needed to be fulfilled to empower good study habits while they guide them

accordingly (Khan, Z. N. 2016)

The research study provided the information to understand the student’s

achievements as well as good study habits.

The cited study is relevant to the present study since it aimed to determine

consistent deans' learning habit.

Hypothesis

The study employs the alternative hypothesis, which states a significant

relationship between the learning habits of the junior and senior consistent COE

dean’s lister awardees and their demographic profile in terms of gender and

marital status.

Scope and Limitation

The study is conducted to determine the learning habits of senior and

junior dean’s lister awardees under the College of Education department.

This study is limited to consistent junior and senior deans lister

awardee COE students at URS Taytay Campus year 2020-2021. The

researchers concentrated on the learning habits of senior and junior COE

students and how they overcome hindrances in learning habits, and how they

affect the students.

The respondents of this study are the students of URS Taytay

campus who are junior and senior students under the College of Education

department. This study shall take place in Google form only. Survey questions

14

are administered after the respondents confirm their participation in this study.

Additionally, the findings of this study are limited based only on the answers of

the respondents. Hence, the data results represent the views only of the

respondents, not all the schools of URS campuses as a whole.

Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to the following:

School Administrators. It will guide them to develop the scheme to focus

more on students who have difficulty comprehending the lesson.

Guidance Counselors. It will help them find a way to counsel and guide

students who are not one of the dean's lister awardees, especially those

with a failing grade.

Parents. It is vital to the parent, mainly because they are the ones who

should guide their children to be more efficient in their academic

performance.

Future Researchers. The proposed study will benefit and help the future

researcher as their guide. The study can also open in the development of

this study.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY AND SOURCES OF DATA

This chapter includes the research method, setting of the study, subject of

the study, sources of data, procedure of the study, and statistical treatment.

Research Design

The researcher utilized the descriptive method using a quantitative

approach in gathering information about the present condition Krathwohl, D. R,

(2009), descriptive research as a purposive process of gathering, analyzing,

classifying, and tabulating data about prevailing conditions, practices, beliefs,

processes, trends and cause-effect relationship and then making an adequate

and accurate interpretation about such data with or without the aid of statistical

methods. According to Best (1993), A descriptive type of research involves the

collection of data to answer questions concerning the current status of the

subject in the study. It is designed to gather information or conditions existing at

a particular period. The whole process focuses on the learning habits that lead

the junior and senior COE students to be consistent in receiving this award.
