1. Titanium(IV) oxide (TiO2) is a white substance produced by the action of

sulfuric acid on the mineral il-menite (FeTiO 3): FeTiO3 + H2SO4 → TiO2 + FeSO4
+ H2O . Its opaque and nontoxic properties make it suitable as a pigment in
plastics and paints. In one process, 8.00 x 103 kg of FeTiO 3 yielded 3.67 x 103
kg of TiO2. What is the percent yield of the reaction?

m(FeTiO3) = 8.00 x 103 kg

m(TiO2) = 3.67 x 103 kg
M(FeTiO3) = 151.71 g/mole

M(TiO2) = 79.87 g/mole x 8.00 𝑥 103 𝑘𝑔 FeTiO3 = 4.21 x 103 kg or 4211.72 kg

151.71 𝑔/𝑚𝑜𝑙 FeTiO3

%yield = 3.67 𝑥 103 𝑥 100 = 87.17 %

4.21 𝑥 103

Answer: %Yield (TiO2) = 87.17%

2. Ethylene (C2H4), an important industrial organic chemical, can be prepared by

heating hexane (C6H14) at 800oC: C6H14 → C2H4 + other products. If the yield of
ethylene production is 42.5 percent, what mass of hexane must be reacted to
produce 481 g of ethylene?

𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑎𝑙 481
0.425 = 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 = 𝑥

481
X= 0.425 = 1131.76 g ethylene
𝑚𝑜𝑙 1 𝑚𝑜𝑙 86 𝑔
1131.76 𝐶2𝐻4 𝑥 𝑥 𝑚𝑜𝑙 = 3476.12 𝑔 ℎ𝑒𝑥𝑎𝑛𝑒
𝑥 28 𝑔 𝐶6𝐻14

3. Disulfide dichloride (S2Cl2) is used in the vulcanization of rubber, a process
that prevents the slippage of rubber molecules past one another when stretched.
It is prepared by heating sulfur in an atmosphere of chlorine:
S8(/) + Cl2(g) → S2Cl2(l). What is the theoretical yield of S2Cl2 in grams when
4.06 g of S8 are heated with 6.24g of Cl2? If the actual yield of S2Cl2 is 6.55g,
what is the percent yield?

S8 + 4Cl2 -> 4S2Cl2

4.06 g S8
6.24 g Cl2

4.06 𝑔
n (S8) =
256.52 𝑔/𝑚𝑜𝑙 = 0.0158 mol

6.24 𝑔
n (Cl2) = = 0.0880 mol
70.91 𝑔/𝑚𝑜𝑙

(limiting) 0.0158 < 0.0880

4 (excess)
n (S2Cl2) = 4 x (S8) = 4 (0.0158) = 0.0632 mol
M (S2Cl2) = 135.04 g/mol
= n x M = 0.0632 mol x 135.04 g/mol = 8.53 g
𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑙 6.55 𝑔
%yield = 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑥 100 = 8.53 𝑥
𝑔 100 = 76.79%

4.Nitroglycerin (C3H5N3O9) is a powerful explosive. Its decomposition may be

represented by C3H5N3O9 → N2 + CO2 + H2O + O2 This reaction generates a
large amount of heat and many gaseous products. It is the sudden formation of
these gases, together with their rapid expansion, that produces the explosion. (a)
What is the maximum amount of O 2 in grams that can be obtained from 2.00 x
102 g of nitroglycerin? (b) Calculate the percent yield in this reaction if the
amount of O2 generated is found to be 6.55 g.

4C3H5N3O9 → 6N2+12CO2 +10H2O+ O2

2.00 x 102 g C3H5N3O9

4 mol C3H5N3O9 → 1
mol O2
227.08 g/mol
2.00 x 102 g = 0.8807 mol C3H5N3O9
mol C3H5N3O9 =
227.08 𝑔/𝑚𝑜𝑙

1 𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝑂2
0.8807 mol C3H5N3O9 x
4 𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝐶3H5N3O9 = 0.2202 mol O2
32 𝑔
Mass of O2 = 0.2202 mol O2 𝑥 = 7.05𝑔 𝑂2
𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝑂2

b) %yield = 6.55 𝑥 100 = 92.91%
