BSED ENG 4101

1. What does K-12 Curriculum have to do with me as a future educator? Write your reflection.

K to 12 (also K-12) is an education system under the Department of Education that aims to
enhance learners’ basic skills, produce more competent citizens, and prepare graduates for
lifelong learning and employment. “K” stands for Kindergarten and “12” refers to the succeeding 12
years of basic education (6 years of elementary education, 4 years of junior high school, and 2 years of
senior high school).

As a future educator K-12 will help me to build the require skills and abilities to cope up with the
international standards. This will introduce me to a various teaching strategies and techniques that will
boost the interests and learnings for both my students and I. With the help of K-12 curriculum, I am
confident that I can show my competency in all subjects both knowledge and performance based. The
curriculum will provide me schemes on how to handle a K-12 based classroom.

As a first batch of soon to be K-12 graduate, I can say that I have the sufficient knowledge and
skills to deal with my future students. I am confident that I can compete with the professionals in the
field of teaching. I can say that I have more knowledge than them because I already experienced what is
the objective and requirement under K-12. To conclude, K-12 prepares me to be one of the best
educator I the field.

2. How can I apply what I learned? How can the demand of K-12 be reflected in my career path?

Being a K-12 learner, I acquire a lot of knowledge and skills that will be useful in the future most
especially in the field of teaching. I can apply this learning by proposing and discussing new strategies
that will help the students to learn quickly and be globally competitive.

For example, I will be teaching public high school students, as I enter the teaching field I would
like to show my idea about handling 21st century learners and teaching 21st century skills and
knowledge under the K-12 curriculum. I would like to improve on how the students be taught because I
find it insufficient when I was studying under this curriculum. Additionally, the learning that I have
gathered will be reflected on how well I do in my written and performance assessments. Since as far
what I have known in the K-12 curriculum it is performance based and your performance across the field
will play a big role in assessing if you meet the objectives of what a K-12 learner is.

3. Based on your opinion, which among the 4 rationale of K-12 curriculum is a failure?

Based on the 4 rationale of the K-12 curriculum, I think coping up with the 12-year basic
education international standards for our graduates to be recognized as professional here and abroad is
still tentative. Why? Because there are still no product of K-12 graduates I can’t say that this rationale is
a success. We still need more time for us to know if this rationale will be met or not. The international
norms keep on changing while the education system in the Philippines is moving at slow pace. So,
maybe when the first batch graduates it still not enough for us compete with more advanced countries
in the world.
