ACTIVITY 2.1
WRITTEN WORK

1. What is the importance of “Transitions” in an essay? Explain your words.

Transition words are crucial components in writing and speaking because they connect
one idea to another in a sentence or paragraph. It improves coherence and connects
one topic to another, assisting the reader in understanding the connections of the
concepts conveyed between the evidence and supports, or it can be used to change the
topic or phrases. It is also utilized to avoid abrupt jumps or breaks between concepts,
which helps us better absorb the main idea of what we are reading. It also connects the
words and paragraphs together smoothly and strengthens what the essay intends to
share, explain, and dispute with the reader. As a result, these words can assist us in
efficiently communicating, making the flow of information easier and guiding the readers.
When used effectively, they improve the clarity, impact, and your position on the essay.

2. Expound on “grounds” and “warrants” in an essay.

“Grounds” refer to the information contained with facts and evidence that are gathered
which supports a claim on an argumentative essay. It provides a solid foundation which
serves as a backbone and supports the arguments stated in the essay. There are
various kinds of grounds that may be used in supporting an argument like: evidence that
includes statistical data, research findings or observations, and any factual information
such as anecdotes, and historical references may do as long as it contains factual
information that may support the arguments. However, the term "warrants" refers to a
link that bridges the gap between the essay's claim and its supporting evidence. They
are links that clarify how the arguments' supporting facts work together and explains why
the grounds relate to and support the claim or argument of the essay. Therefore,
grounds are the ones that give evidence to back up a claim in an essay, while warrants
are the ones that show how the grounds relate to the claim. Both of these components
are essential to an argumentative essay since they aid in developing a well-reasoned
argument that may persuade the readers or audience.

3. Should an author of an argumentative essay state his or her own position in his
topic? Explain.
Yes, the author must explain their stance, support it with a solid argument, and persuade
the reader in order to successfully write an argumentative essay. By expressing his or
her viewpoint about the essay, the author is able to establish a clear point of view and
direction with regard to the subject of the essay. Without a clearly stated viewpoint, the
essay could not be clear about which side the author favors more, making it difficult for
the reader or audience to comprehend the author's position and argument. If the
audience or readers are aware of the author's perspective, they can assess the
arguments, evidence, and rebuttals provided in the essay. By doing so, they will be able
to effectively make their own judgments and create their own opinions and conclusions
about the essay.
