Standard Deviation of Individual Data Series:

For individual series, the Standard Deviation can be calculated using any of the
following methods.
A: Actual mean method (Direct)
B: Assumed Mean method. (Indirect)

For individual series, the Standard Deviation can be calculated using the
following formula.
Formula

Where −
 x = individual observation of variable.
 x̅ = Mean of all observations of the variable
 N = Number of observations
A. Actual Mean Method:

Example

 Problem Statement:
 Calculate Standard Deviation for the following individual data:

Items 14 36 45 70 105
Solution:

X x̅ x−x̅ (x−x̅)2

14 54 -40 1600
36 54 -18 324
45 54 -9 81
70 54 16 256
105 54 51 2601
N=5     ∑(x−x̅)2 = 4862

Mean = X̅ = 14 +36+45 +70 + 105/ 5 = 54

Based on the above-mentioned formula, Standard Deviation σ will be:

∑( x−x ̅ )2
σ=√ N −1

∑( x−x ̅ )2 4862 4862

σ=√ N −1
=σ= √ 5−1 = √ 4 = √ 1215.5
σ = 34.86
The Standard Deviation of the given numbers is 34.86.
B. Assumed Mean Method:
When the actual mean is in fractions and it would be too hectic to take
deviations from it and then obtain squares of these deviations, in such case
assumed mean method is appropriate to use.
For individual series, the Standard Deviation can be calculated using the
following formula.

σ = ∑ ( d ) 2/( N−1)−( N∑d

√ −1
)2

Example
 Problem Statement:
 Calculate Standard Deviation for the following individual data:

Items 14 36 45 70 105

Solution:
A= 52

X d = x− A (d)2

14 -38 1444
36 -16 256
45 -7 49
70 18 324
105 53 2809
∑ x = 270  ∑ d = 10   ∑(d)2 = 4882

∑d 2
σ= √ (∑(d )2)/( N −1)−(
N−1
)

σ = 4882/( 4)−(10/ 4)2

σ=
√ 1220.5−¿ 6.25 ¿
σ=
√ 1214.25

σ = 34.86
Therefore, Standard deviation is 34.86
