“Building Habits”
How can you help people form habits in everyday life? What strategies would that involve? How
can you make sure they stick to it? It could be in any domain of health, productivity or personal
life. Demonstrate your solution using a prototype or basic interface.

This is your product. Give us the complete details of your product including a definition of the
problem, how you interpret it, your approaches, your approach vs other potential options, any
alternatives if you had considered, problems you faced, how you arrived at the solution.
Problem Statement
Design an online learning experience for students (pursuing longer courses, degrees, masters etc) that encourages consistent attendance, course progress and
by helping them form habits and follow routines for successful course completion.
Design the solution and demonstrate it with conceptual models and a few key screens. Justify your choices and rationales.

Research
Secondary
Habit formation is the process by which behaviors become automatic. Habits can form without a person intending to acquire them, but they can also be
deliberately cultivated—or eliminated—to better suit one’s personal goals. Example, Instinctively reaching for a cigarette after waking up is a habit. So is picking
up a pair of running shoes after getting home each day.

Habit loop is a loop of elements that’s produce habits, they are Trigger (like stress), Action(binge eat), Reward(momentary relief).

Habits are different from routines, While a routine involves repeated behavior, it’s not necessarily performed in response to trigger, like a habit is. You might
routinely wash the dishes or go to the gym without a trigger to do so because you feel you need to do those things. The actions or behaviours in habits are easier
Than in routines, like start the day with a glass of warm water which is easier than a routine of running 3 kms everyday or writing one short story everyday.
Primary : User Interview
Vinod - An Engineer in Mechanical (Automotive) domain aspiring to take up business role in the same field, plans to get a PG Diploma in Business through online
education. He is motivated by interest in Automotive Industry, desire to climb the ladder and to be technologically updated to get competitive edge. He enrolls
into a Data Science and Business Analytics courses.

As the course progresses, apart from the usual self discipline problems, he struggles mainly with the pace and in grasping a whole new domain on logic, data
and analytics. He is frustrated and wonders if his background is relevant to his desired future, struggles to find people with similar issues, has no clue of how
do others cope with such difficulties.

Bhagya - An MBA working in marketing, aspires to become growth hack expert. She is motivated by the passion for growth and marketing of the products and
services, and enrolls into the Growth Hack online course. As she the course progresses, apart from usual problems with time management, work-life balance
she struggles with finding quick help and support. Frustrated by not feeling connected, no sense of belongingness to the course, she quits the course halfway.

Motivations Goals Pain Points

Upgrade professionally To get a job as ML Engineer 1. Discipline and Consistency

Passionate about programming and AI Increase Salary 2. Feeling lost, disconnected

Better income Build network 3. No personal support system

Collaborate with like minded people 4. Quick and casual doubt clarifications

5. No exchange ideas, concepts

6. Losing motivation, not driven by commitment,

Routine
Concepts and Strategies
Gamify and engage to form habits
1. Learning about students active hours and nudging at the right time

2. Observe patterns(AI), active and inactive times of the day, send reminders or a quick trivia quiz for encouragement to get them back on learning track,
ex. Duolingo

Addresses pain points 1 and 2

Leverage social fabric ( Conceptual model that maps mental model) for natural routines to develop
1. The class students of a batch are listed and visible to each other with their Facebook, linkedIn, Instagram links (by user consent)

2. The course begins with introduction of students to each other, students would know each other backgrounds and expertise and can connect to discuss at
leisure for spontaneous discussions and a sense of belonging.

3. Organise casual Q&A sessions followed by social events (virtual of course)

4. An Alumni group that keeps them connects forever post course completion.

Addresses pain points 2,3,4 and 5

Strategic pricing/financial reward and risk system for hard routines

Design to apply Burn or Burn theory to create routine and commitment

It’s a way to effectively simulate the negative effects, in realtime ,of procrastination which would otherwise would show up in future.
Let’s say a course is priced at Rs. 300 for 3 months, give 2 options to take

A. Take the course for the same amount no matter whether you finish it late, on time, or ahead of time.

B. Get 30% money back on punctual completion, 45% on high merit, however, for every class or date missed pay a fine, the class cannot be continued unless
Fine is paid.

Addresses pain points 6
