7.3.5 Plasterboards (Drywall)

7.3.5.1 Definition

Masonry with plaster boards is a non-bearing wall system that basically composed of high
mechanical and acoustic resistance plaster sheets, combined with internal galvanized steel
structures other assembly components.

7.3.5.2 Plaster Sheets

These sheets are industrially manufactured through a continuous rolling process involving a
mixture of plaster, water and additives, between two cardboard sheets. One of these sheets
is bent across the longitudinal edges and glued onto the other sheet.

The drywall system (gypsum plates bolted to galvanized steel frame structures) can be used
to replace conventional internal divisions (walls, ceilings and claddings).

Plaster boards shall be manufactured in accordance with NBR 14715-1.

The following types of plaster boards are manufactured:

• Standard (ST):
- Used in dry areas.
• Moisture resistant (MR):
- Used in areas subject to moisture for a limited period of time, in
alternating periods.
• Fire resistant (FR):
- Used in dry areas that require better performance in relation to fire
exposure.

7.3.5.3 Steel Shapes.

7.3.5.4 Dimensions and dimensional tolerances

The coated steel sheets, which constitute the raw material for the manufacture of the steel
shapes, must have a minimum thickness "e" of 0,50 mm, even the coating. The length of the
steel shapes shall be of a tolerance of ± 0,2%.

The dimensions and dimensional tolerances of all types of steel shape must follow the values
stipulated by NBR 15217.

7.3.5.5 Mounting.

Parts used to mount the non-bearing masonry components onto each other, or to anchor
steel shapes into the building elements.

Mounting of steel shapes onto the building elements may be with the following elements:

• Minimum 6 mm diameter plastic bushings;

• Minimum 4 mm diameter metal rivets;

Anchoring between non-bearing masonry elements shall use specific bolts, as follows:

• Mounting steel shapes onto each other (metal/metal)

• Mounting plaster boards onto steel shapes (sheet/metal).

7.3.5.6 Tapes

• Acoustic finishing by insulating steel shapes within wall perimeters.

7.3.5.7 Mineral Wool

Material composed of glass wool or rock wool to be setup between plaster boards with the
purpose of increasing thermal-acoustic insulation inside the wall.

7.3.5.8 Characteristics of the Plaster Board Non-bearing Masonry System.

• Assembly of the system is by means of mechanical coupling with flexible

modulation;
• Walls have flat surfaces, smooth texture and monolith aspect;
• Plaster boards are moisture sensible.
• The system may be disassembled, must be light and present several
variation possibilities.

7.3.6 Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Modular Panels

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) modular panels consist of a self-extinguishing, expanded

polystyrene core and are, coated on both sides by galvanized sheet steel and pre-painted
with electrostatic epoxy paint, which makes it possible to have an
insulating panel with structural characteristics.

7.3.6.1 Panel dimensions

The most common dimensions are:

• Width: 1150 mm and 1160 mm.

• Height: can reach up to 12000 mm.
• Thickness: 100 mm, 200 mm and 50 mm.

The choice of panel thickness will vary with use. For the walls, usually the 100 mm panel is
used, the covers are used 200 mm and for false shafts walls the panel with 50 mm thickness
is used.

Dimensions may vary by manufacturer. In this way, it is necessary to consult the

characteristics of the material to be used in the project, after having been chosen by the
manufacturer.

7.3.6.2 Fixing panels system

Steel shape, type "U" are bolted to the floor. The panels are embedded in these metal steel
shapes (male and female fitting) creating a locking. Because they are self-supporting, the
panels can be attached vertically to the height equivalent to three floors, however in this case
it is necessary to have an auxiliary structure to support the floor of the upper floors.

7.3.6.3 System characteristics

• Modular construction aiming at the speed of execution;

• Reduction of costs;
• Self-supporting structure (the maximum length in which the panel remains
self-supporting is approximately 8.5 m in one direction);
• Work process and project is industrialized.

For more information you should contact the manufacturers during the development of the
project.

7.4 MASONRY USING SOLID BRICKS, HOLLOW CERAMIC BLOCKS, CONCRETE

BLOCK, AUTOCLAVED AERATED CONCRETE, PLASTERBOARD AND
EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE (EPS) MODULAR PANEL

7.4.1 General Provisions

Several aspects related to the design and execution of wall with hollow ceramic blocks,
concrete blocks, solid bricks, autoclaved aerated concrete, plasteboard and expanded
polystyrene modular panel, should be integrated in a rationalized way to obtain the
effectiveness of the system that will be built.

7.4.2 Design data

7.4.2.1 Technical Properties and Characteristics of Masonry Works

Hollow Ceramic Blocks, Concrete Blocks and Solid Bricks

In order to ensure a satisfactory level of safety against the action of side loads (action of the
wind or side impacts), the masonry dimensions (length and height) shall be limited both in
length and height. This limitation is composed of bracing elements, namely:

• Length-wise: columns, stiffeners and transversal masonry.

• Height-wise: beams, slabs and sealing bands.

Polystyrene (EPS) Modular Panel

EPS panels are self-supporting if they are vertically fixed up to a maximum of three floors, in
which case an auxiliary structure is required to support the upper floors.

The dimensions of the panel are variable. The width will vary between suppliers, the most
usable are 1150 mm and 1160 mm. The height is customizable and can reach up to 12000
mm.

7.4.2.2 Joints

Hollow Ceramic Blocks, Solid Bricks and Concrete Block

In order to prevent the risk of fissures in long masonry walls, caused essentially by factors
like retraction of the laying mortar, thermal movements of the masonry and of the structure, it
is recommended to limit the continuous masonry stretches, above all in façades. Therefore,
masonry control joints shall be used, according to the block thickness, so as not to exceed
the following distances between control joints, as indicated in Table 7.6.

Table 7.6 – Maximum Distance between Control Joints in Block Masonry Walls
Maximum Distance Between Joints (m)

9 10.00 7.50
14 14.00 10.50
19 14,00 10,50

Whenever movement joints are used in the structure, there shall also be corresponding
control joints in the masonry, in the same location and with the same width, notwithstanding
the length of the masonry. In case no movement joints are used, control joints in the masonry
shall be approximately 20 mm wide.

In order to ensure the bond between masonry stretches separated by control joints, 5.0 mm
diameter S-shaped steel bars, embedded approximately 40 cm shall be introduced into laying
joints, every two brick layers, each side of the masonry, as shown in Figure 7.1 and 7.2.

without damaging the masonry, in relation to the thermoacoustic insulation and
watertightness, as shown in Figure 7.2.

Autoclaved Aerated Concrete

In seals of autoclaved aerated concrete, the joints to be used must be of the laying and work.
It should be noted that for both laying joints and work joints, the thickness of the outer joints
should be at least 12.5 cm, with a thickness of 15 cm.

• Work joints: they have the function of limiting the dimensions of the masonry
panel, so that it does not occur at concentrations of tensions. In this way the
joints should be provided whenever the panel length exceeds 6.0 m. The
thickness of these joints should be 10 to 12 mm. (Figure 7.3).

Plasterboard (Drywall)

In plasterboard (Drywall) sealing system, joints are part of the installation process. Pastas,
tapes and angles should be performed consistently to ensure, throughout the life of the
structure, the mechanical continuity between the plates ensuring a smooth surface without
cracks.

The pastas for treatment of joints have the function of bonding of the tapes, treatment of
joints, and finishing of joints.

These pastas can be purchased in the form of powder to be mixed with water or pre-mixed,
ready for use.

Joint tape of treatment of joints are resistant and do not deform during the assembly process.
The micro perforation of the tape avoids the formation of bubbles and facilitates the adhesion
of the mass for treatment of joints

Some recommendations must be followed in order to have long-lasting and functioning joints.
Are they:

• Checking of the condition of the surface to be worked, checking that the

heads of the bolts are level;
• Surfaces must be clean and dry;
• Joints should be treated prior to the application of pastas and paint
components

Polystyrene (EPS) Modular Panel

The technical instructions for treatment of joints, will vary according to the chosen supplier.
To this end, the supplier's technical guidelines must be followed.

7.4.2.3 Horizontal and Vertical Modulation of Masonry

In order to rationalize the use of materials and labor, the architectural design should,
whenever possible, match the lengths and heights of the masonry, admitting multiple values
corresponding to the length and height of the block to be used, also considering the thickness
of the joints of the mortar.

In the architectural design, the best solutions for the horizontal modulation of masonry should
be foreseen whenever possible, considering the divisions of internal areas, the positions and
dimensions of the structural parts, the location and size of openings, the standard dimensions
of components for floors and linings and the architectural treatments of facades.

Hollow Ceramic Blocks, Solid bricks and Concrete Block

At the ends of the masonry (encounter with pillars or with frames), it should be foreseen to
use the block type itself (1/2 block) or the use of massive bricks for the masonry panel
finishings.

Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC)

The walls should preferably be joined by mooring joints. All vertical joints between
intercepting blocks and contiguous blocks must be filled. The blocks that make up the
intersection should have a length of at least 1/2 block or 30 cm.
