5. EQUIPMENT SPECIFICATION
Mechanical equipment shall be selected for the most severe operation conditions, as specified in
the data sheet.
Belt conveyor speeds shall be determined for maximum 80% belt fill at design capacity for the cross
section defined by the applicable standards, standard clearance to belt edge to be maintained.
Where an interconnected Belt Conveyor system is supplied, Vendor must analyze the individual
behavior of each conveyor in transient, start and stop modes. Vendor must also provide devices and
means as needed for synchronizing conveyor run times to prevent clogging due to excess material
on transfer chutes.
The Belt Conveyor, including its drive assembly, must be selected or designed to start and stop at full
load (100% fill). At least five (5) starts and stops per hour must be considered. The Belt Conveyor and
its components must be ready for operation after being installed and field tested.
The Belt Conveyor must be designed to the profile, capacity and other technical requirements
included in the design drawings and associated data sheets.
The equipment shall be selected for a heavy-duty application in an abrasive, dust laden atmosphere.
The paint specification will be according to the manufacturer's standards and should guarantee
protection against corrosion and premature wear.
Design and selection of Belt Conveyor components shall comply with this Specification and
applicable design criteria and standards.

NewFer GmbH
Vendor must confirm and guarantee supply of all components shown in the design drawings.
Vendor must consider worst combinations between loaded and empty sections when determining
the power required to operate the system, especially in acceleration, emergency stop and braking
modes.
Pulleys and shafts shall be sized for the maximum stresses that are expected to be imparted on the
conveyor belts.
Means shall be provided to raise head pulleys above their work position to minimize stresses on belt
edges during transition. For toe pulleys, this shall be provided only where necessary.
Design of structural components must assume that conveyor will be loaded to 100% of its theoretical
cross-sectional area.
Concave and convex curves must be designed with adequate radii to minimize stresses on belt
edges, which must be within the range recommended by belt manufacturer. If necessary, devices
must be provided to prevent belt lift during no-load starts.
Counterweight systems must be supplied complete with all necessary components. Load, total
weight and ballast details must be visibly marked in the counterweight boxes.
Drives must have sufficient start torque to move conveyors at full design capacity.
Walkways must be installed on both sides of the conveyor, along its elevated sections, for
maintenance purposes according to drawings.
Material moved by scrapers must be collected into chutes feeding downstream conveyors.
If specified, belt turnovers must be flat type. Both turnovers must be in the same direction to allow
stresses on belt edges to be balanced. Pulleys must have a contact angle of at least 5º to the belt
to allow for proper alignment.
A V-shaped wiper must be provided overlying the upper face of the return belt.
The Belt Conveyor Vendor must provide reference information about similar equipment design and
construction.
Installation, operation and maintenance manuals must include tables of bolt tightening torques,
mechanical plays/slacks to be observed when making adjustments, lining/coating change
instructions, material specifications, inspection and lubrication plans.
Lubrication plans must include lubrication and lubricant types, and tables of lubricant equivalents,
quantities and change frequencies.
The main drive motor will be supplied with low voltage, three-phase alternating current, mains
frequency in 50Hz. The motor must have at least IP 54 protection.

The existing belt conveyors shall be designed following the advice in the document 0399-145-AA-M-
CA-001 – CAPACITY CALCULATIONS FOR EXISTING AND NEW BELT CONVEYORS. The VENDOR could
propose another solution, but it is better to use the advice form CLIENT-ENGINEER.
The new belt conveyors shall be design according to the informations in the document 0399-145-AA-
M-CA-001 – CAPACITY CALCULATIONS FOR EXISTING AND NEW BELT CONVEYORS, but the VENDOR
must confirm all calculations in this document.
For structural calculations, a belt fill of 100% must be considered, plus overload.
Essentially, Vendor must use the structural frames shown in design drawings and adhere to the
Metallic Structures Design Criteria and Engineering Standards for Platforms, Ladders and Guardrails.
Elevated spans over vehicular or pedestrian passageways shall be protected with wire mesh screens
with ½” mesh size and 1/8" wire diameter, placed only beneath the protruding idler roller support
frame to prevent falling of material or components. In this case, frames must be designed assuming
the load on these screens.
Static loads must be equal to the total weight of the equipment, carried material, framework,
conduits and piping and must include, where applicable, material buildups and loading from any
assembly or expansion.
Conduits and piping must be mounted to walkway risers in an external and vertical position.
