MUSICAL.LY, THE APP TURNING POP FANS INTO STARS
1 17-year-old Amelia Gething was on holiday with her family in Barbados this
summer when a stranger approached with a question: “Are you on Musical.ly?
My daughters recognised you but they’re too shy to say hello.” That
experience, Gething laughs, “was very weird”. Her instinctively funny videos
5 have earned her 600,000 fans and made her one of the biggest UK stars on
Musical.ly, an app that allows users to lip-synch to songs, apply music video-
style effects and share the results. When we speak of Musical.ly’s 95 million
users – or Musers – she’s ranked 67th, and since joining the app her Instagram
followers have rocketed from 700 to more than 90,000.
10 On paper, the idea of an app allowing teens to lip-synch to hit songs may not
sound exciting, but it takes 10 seconds inside the app to understand why it is
so attractive. The best contributors appear on clips that are funny, expressive
and innovative.
As the app’s success has increased so has interest from the music industry.
15 Singers like Selena Gomez and Jason Derulo have used Musical.ly to engage
with fans. The app also acts as a launchpad for new artists. One is Carson
Lueders, 15, a talented Washington-based singer. “Say I release a song,” he
supposes, when asked to explain the app’s power. “All my fans out there can
re-lip-synch to my song and reuse it in their own Musical.lys. It’s a huge
20 platform.” Musical.ly has been acquired by a Chinese company and renamed
TikTok.

EXTREME COLD WEATHER SPREADS EAST
1 On Thursday, Midwesterners walked heavily toward a familiar reality:
temperatures well below zero, schools and businesses closed, warnings to
wear extra layers or, just stay indoors. The polar mass of air that arrived this
week has disrupted life across an entire region. Deaths and injuries were
5 reported. And even stepping outside remained a painful, risky experience.
But the forecast finally suggested relief ahead. By Thursday night,
temperatures across the Midwest were expected to rise slowly above zero. By
the end of the weekend, meteorologists predicted a 70- or 80-degree swing,
with readings in the 40s or 50s and rain instead of snow.
10 Still, risks remained. A band of snow complicated travel on Thursday, and in
the Northeast, officials warned of their own cold wave, with heavy snow in
some places and wind chills in others. Officials in New York and other parts
of the Northeast warned residents to prepare for temperatures that could be
dangerous.
15 The extremely low temperatures this week in parts of the United States stand
in sharp contrast to the trend toward warmer winters. Emerging research
suggests that a warming Arctic is causing changes in the jet stream and
pushing polar air down to latitudes that are unaccustomed to them.
Friederike Otto, a climate scientist who studies how specific weather events
20 are exacerbated by global warming, said that while not all of these extreme
events could be attributed to climate change, the profound changes in the
earth’s atmosphere raised “the likelihood of a large number of extreme
events.”
