u - chart exercise

An improvement team in the engineering department of a manufacturing plant is trying

to reduce the number of errors found on engineering drawings. Data has been collected
over time on the number of errors found on the drawings completed each week. The
data has been entered on the control chart overleaf. Use this data and the steps in the
tool book to construct a u-chart chart.

Step 1 Complete the header information and step 2 Record the data (pages 186–
187) have been completed for you.
Step 3 Calculate the number of faults per unit (U) for each subgroup (page 187–8).
Complete this step on the control chart overleaf.

n
Step 4a Calculate the average number (page 188).

∑n
Step 4b Calculate the average subgroup size (page 189).

∑n =
k
Step 5a Calculate the control limits for all the data (page 189–190).

UCLu = u + 3 = LCLu = u − 3 =
n n

Step 5b Identify the subgroups requiring re-calculated control limits (pages 190–191).

Maximum acceptable subgroup size = n × 1.25 =

Minimum acceptable subgroup size = n × 0.75 =

Step 5c Calculate the control limits for the subgroups with too large or too small a
subgroup size (page 191).

UCL u = u + 3

Step 6 Scale the average chart (page 193).

Complete steps 7 to 9 (pages 194–196) on the control chart overleaf.
