STEEL
Steel is an alloy consisting mostly of iron, with carbon
content between 0.2% and 2.1% by weight, depending
on the grade.
 Types of steels are:-
Alloy steels(contains non-carbon elements)
Carbon steels(≤2.1% carbon; low alloy)
Tool steels(alloy steel for tools)
Stainless steels(contains ≥10.5% chromium)
Spring steel (low or no alloy)
Maraging steel (contains nickel)

PROCESS EMPLOYED IN SMS OF JSPL
The EAF is fed with hot metal coming from BF,
Sponge iron from DRI plant and scrap iron together
with flux material. The resulting mixture after proper
treatment is tapped and sent to LRF where its
chemistry is maintained. Then comes the VD. This
stage is optional and depends on the customer’s
demand. Here the inclusion gases are removed. Finally
it is sent to caster for casting into desired shapes and
cutting into proper length is done. The product takes
24 hrs to cool and come to room temperature.
THERE ARE FOUR SECTION IN SMS

EAF
LRF
VD
COMBI CASTER
GENERAL VIEW OF EAF
Design, Engg. and Supply: Sarralle, Spain

CAPACITY : 100 T

TRANSFORMER RATING : 100 MVA

ELECTRODE DIA. : 24"(600 MM)

NO OF OXYGEN LANCE : 4

FURNACE LINING BRICKS :MAGNESIA CARBON BRICKS

TAP HOLE : EBT TYPE

Functions of EAF:
Melting of inputs and homogenization of steel bath:-
The raw materials are melted in the furnace with the help
of electric arc which generates required temperature.
Raising the temperature of the melt to ≈1620°C for
tapping:- The temperature of the melt is maintained by
arc application.
Decarburization:- The percentage of the carbon is
brought down to 0.05%.
Dephosphorization:- The phosphorus percentage is
brought down to 0.010%.
Slag free and compact stream tapping:- The tapping
is done with care so that slag does not comes with melt
and temp. 1620°C.
METALLIC INPUTS:
Hot metal from blast furnace : 30 to 70%
%C :3.8 to 4.2%
%Si :0.3 TO 1.0 %
%P :0.13 max
Temperature : 1280 deg min
DRI (Lumps +Fines) from DRI Plant : 40 to 49%
%C :0.1 max
%Fe(met) : 81 min
%SiO2 : 3.5
Scrap : 1 to 5% (optional)
FLUX:
Lime from LDP (Lime and Dololime Plant)
Burned dolomite from LDP
Ladle Reheating Furnace

No. of LRF : 01
Make : Sarralle, Spain
Capacity : 100T
Transformer rating : 18 MVA
FUNCTIONS OF LRF
Refining of steel: Secondary refining of steel is done.

Achieving desired chemistry: Particular additives are
added to get required chemistry.

Desulphurization: Sulphur percentage is reduced to
minimum so that hot soreness is avoided.

Thermal and Chemical Homogenization: the melt is

homogenized by blowing argon gas or purging.

Raising desired temperature for casting: the temperature
of the melt is maintained with the help of electrodes.
Vacuum Degasser

Design, Engg and Supply: Metec

Suction Capacity : 350 Kg/hr at 0.5 torr
Pump down time : 5 minutes to 0.5 torr
Vacuum System : 6 Steam ejectors
Functions of VD
Removal of entrapped gases:- The gas
included inside the melt are removed by
creating vacuum upto 2%.

Removal of Sulphur :-by slag- metal
