COURSE: BFC43502 OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH (OSH) SEMESTER/YEAR: SEM 1

TASK: PROJECT- GROUP (20%)

Introduction

As an owner of a construction company Class A, Grade G7, you were recently being awarded a new
proposed development of 20 units of a five-storey lecture room building by a Universiti Tun Hussein
Onn Malaysia (UTHM). The construction site is 5 acres of land consisting of bushes, large trees,
watery area and the rest contains dilapidated two-storey buildings that need to be demolished. You
were requested by the UTHM to provide a preliminary risk assessment report before the
commencement of the construction and recommend the appropriate risk controls to ensure the
safety and health of workers and campus residents while performing their works, and further prevent
an accident. Your report should be following the HIRARC guideline and regulations of the
Department of Safety and Health Malaysia (DOSH).

(If necessary the student is allowed to make assumptions to complete the instructions given).

Topics (each group shall be given one topic):

1. Site clearing, earthwork, demolition work and including setting up a site office
2. Piling and foundation work
3. Superstructure work including wall
4. Mechanical and Electrical work
5. Concrete work & finishing
6. Plant & machinery including equipment tools
7. Elevator services and operations
8. Road work including confined space work
9. Welding and masonry work
10. Roof work
11. Lifting operations including ergonomic

Instruction

1. This task should be executed in a group (5 or 6 people).


2. Identify 10 hazards (safety and health hazards), including at least 3 health hazards at
the workplace.
3. Estimate the safety and health risks from every each of these hazards.
4. Determine the most critical safety and health hazards.
5. Suggest and discuss the control measures to eliminate the hazard and reduce the risks of
both critical hazards.
6. Provide the HIRARC table related to the risk assessment.
7. The report should be submitted in Week 12.
8. Presentation on weeks 12 and 13.
9. Because of the reason pandemic Covid- 19, the student must upload the video of a group
presentation (5- 6 minutes), a PPT slide presentation and a report (in Word and PDF file) on
week 12.

Report format

1. The report should be written in English.


2. The font used must be Times New Roman size 11 and using 1.5 spacing
3. The paper size is A4. The left and right margin must be 2.5cm, while the top and bottom
margin must be 3cm.

Content of the report

1. Introduction
A brief description of the task (project) and the job task is given. The introduction
must include a specific work process assigned to your group in terms of safety and
health.

2. Flow chart of the activities involved in the activities.

3. Identify and analyse the method of risk assessment process according to guidelines and
regulations of the Department of Safety and Health Malaysia (DOSH).
- Identify hazards (Safety and health hazard)
- Control measures
- Risk estimation and risk evaluation.
- Provide matrix used, explanation of likelihood and severity and decision for action

4. Develop and discuss on HIRARC table.


- Explain in detail the efficiency of the risk assessment process according to HIRARC and
include economic decision making to manage projects in multidisciplinary
environments

5. Describe and explain the impact of the most critical safety and health risks identified
related to engineering practices for the benefit of society.

6. Explain the overall results of the project in detail including control measures (preventive
and corrective) related to engineering practices for the benefit of society.

7. Conclusion.

List all references in this report with proper citation (APA style). Make sure all these
references are cross-reference in the text.

Assessment Criteria (20%)

 COGNITIVE: Report (Analyze the occupational safety and health (OSH) issues in the
construction industry) (C4, LOD 1, LOD 10, PLO1) – 5%

 PSYCHOMOTOR: Report (Conduct risk assessment process at the workplace according to


HIRARC guideline) (P4, LOD 12, LOD 14, PLO11) – 7.5%
