Performance Task: 2.1.1

Performance Title: “Types of Networks”

1. Personal Area Network (PAN)

PAN is one of the most basic types
of network that we usually use for
our everyday network usage. It is
commonly found in small offices or
our residences. We usually manage
it for our personal use for our daily
network needs.

2. Local Area Network (LAN)

LAN is usually known for Internet café’ usage, because of its simplicity and commonly
known for connecting groups of computers and low-voltage together in a short distance.
That is why Internet café owners use LAN all the time and less space needed for it while
they can easily operate or fix any problems without wasting a lot of time.
3. Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)
WLAN is quite used in the modern
day and era because of its reliability
and convenience, without needing a
device just to operate it.

4. Campus Area Network (CAN)

CAN is usually found and

used in campus or
universities because it is
reliable and easy to operate
in an area or buildings.

5. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

MAN is larger than CAN
because it is found usually in
companies and Cities and
handled by a single person. It is
also as convenient as CAN
because local people can also
access MAN if the local
government approves it.
6. Wide Area Network (WAN)
WAN is much complicated
than LAN, because WAN is
connecting computers around
the world and operated by a lot
of administrators or by the
public. It is also known as
“World wide network”.

7. Storage-Area Network (SAN)

One of the most reliable

network because of its
speed and it is called SAN.
SAN canbe accessed in
the same fashion as drive
attached to the server.

8. System-Area Network (SAN)

This type of SAN is new
within the past two decades
and as usual it is high-speed
connection in server to
server storage area network.
SAN is operated by a system
and it is very fast, unlike any
other network speed.
9. Passive Optical Local Area Network (POLAN)
POLAN starts as an alternative
network to traditional switch-
based Ethernet. POLAN
supports traditional Ethernet
protocols and network
applications. POLAN also use
optical splitters to split an
optical signal from one strand
of a singlemode optical fiber
into multiple signals to serve
users and devices.

10. Enterprise Private Network (EPN)

EPN is built for business users

because it secures the
connection of various locations
to share a computer of a
certain business or company.
It is commonly known for its
highly secured operation that is
why business owners is quite
fond to use EPN all the time.

11. Virtual Private Network (VPN)

VPN is one of the most-used networks, because of its high security that protects the
users from hackers that will likely to steal their personal information, and VPN protects
you from it. The modern-day relies a lot on VPN, because as time goes by hackers are
improving.
VPN is the one that prevents them to steal your precious information or things that you
put on the internet.
