I. INTRODUCTION
This unit covers the outcomes required in installing and configuring desktop and
workstation computers systems. It consists competencies to assemble computer hardware,
install operating system and drivers for peripherals / devices, and install application software
as well as to conduct testing and documentation.
A wide area network (also known as WAN), is a large network of information that is not
tied to a single location. WANs can facilitate communication, the sharing of information and
much more between devices from around the world through a WAN provider. WANs can be
vital for international businesses, but they are also essential for everyday use, as the internet
is considered the largest WAN in the world. Keep reading for more information on WANs, their
use, how they differ from other networks and their overall purpose for businesses and people,
alike.

II. CONTENTS
Definitions of Terms
Computer Network (or Network) - a collection of computers and other hardware
interconnected by communication channels that allow sharing of resources and information.
Where at least one process in one device is able to send/receive data to/from at least one
process residing in a remote device, then the two devices are said to be in a network. It is a
group of devices connected to each other. Networks may be classified into a wide variety of
characteristics, such as the medium used to transport the data, communications protocol
used, scale, topology, benefit, and organizational scope.
Default Gateway – When you use Dynamic IP as connection Internet type, the RENEW button
will be displayed. Click RENEW button to obtain new IP parameters dynamically from ISP.
DNS (Domain Name System) Server IP settings are shown here. Multiple DNS IP settings
are common. In most cases, the first available DNS Server is used.
IP Address – The Current WAN (Internet) IP Address. If assigned dynamically, and no
connection to internet, this field will be blank or 0.0.0.0
MAC Address – The Physical address of the router, as seen in the internet.
OnLine Time – The time that the router keeps OnLine. When you choose PPPoE as WAN
connection type, the OnLine Time will be displayed. Click Connect or Disconnect button to
connect or disconnect from internet.
Server – A computer system in a network that is shared by multiple users. Servers come in
all sizes from x86-based PCs to IBM mainframes. A server may have a keyboard, monitor and
mouse directly attached, or one keyboard, monitor and mouse may connect to any number of
servers via a KVM switch. Servers may be also be accessed only through a network
connection as well.
Subnet Mask – associated with LAN IP Address.
WAN (Wide Area Network)- A network that covers a broad area (i.e., any telecommunications
network that links across metropolitan, regional, or national boundaries) using private or public
network transports.

WIDE AREA NETWORK
Wide area network (also known as WAN), is a large network of information that is not
tied to a single location. WANs can facilitate communication, the sharing of information and
much more between devices from around the world through a WAN provider. These networks
are often established by service providers that then lease their WAN to businesses, schools,
governments or the public. These customers can use the network to relay and store data or
communicate with other users, no matter their location, as long as they have access to the
established WAN.
A Wide Area Network
(WAN) is similar to a Local
Area Network (LAN). The
main difference is that a
WAN operates beyond the
geographic scope of a LAN.
The major characteristics of
a WAN are as follows:
• WANs connect devices
located in different
geographic regions.

• WANs utilize carriers (WAN service

providers) such as cable companies to
communicate across the different
geographic regions.
• WANs utilize various types of serial
connections (typically lower bandwidth than
LANs) for communication.
WANs are essential to supporting business needs. Some of the uses for businesses are as
follows:
• Ability to share data between headquarters and branch offices.
• Ability for employees on company travel to access data residing at the main office.
Home users also need WANs:
• Imagine not having access to the Internet.
• Today people perform banking, procurements and many other things utilizing the Internet.
• Students perform research utilizing the Internet.
TYPES OF WAN CONNECTIONS

• Dedicated Connection. A dedicated connection is a communications medium or other

facility dedicated to a particular application such as telephony operation or internet service
providing.

3
• Switched Connection. Networking hardware that connects devices on a
computer network by using packet switching to receive and forward data to the destination.

DISADVANTAGES OF A WIDE AREA NETWORK (WAN)

1. Security problems: Wide Area Networks faces more security problem as compare to
LANs and MANs.
2. Needs firewall and antivirus software: As it faces security issue, therefore it is a basic
need of WANs to use firewalls and antivirus software to protect data transfer on the
internet which can be accessed and changed by hackers.
3. The setup cost is high: A WAN network covers a large geographical area, it is very
expensive to setup in the initial stage. I
4. Troubleshooting problems: A WAN network covers large geographical areas, so fixing
the problem in a network is a very difficult job.
5. Maintenance Issues: Once set up, maintaining a WAN network is a full-time job which
requires high tech skills of network supervisors and technicians.
ADVANTAGES OF A WIDE AREA NETWORK (WAN)
1. Covers large geographical area: Wide area network covers a large geographical area of
more than 1000km.
2. Centralized data: Wide area networks also provide you the facility of sharing the data to
all of your connected devices in a network.
3. Get updated files and data: Wide Area Networks provide you the facility of getting
updated files and data from the server.
4. Sharing of software and resources: Like LANs, we can share software applications and
other resources with other users on the internet.
5. High bandwidth: WANs covers a large geographical area of more than 1000km. therefore
WANs have high bandwidth compared to LANs and MANs.
CONFIGURING WAN
1. Connect the Router by typing the default IP Address
in the browser. Use the default username and
password presented in the router.
2. Click Next for Quick SetUp. Choose Static IP .
Provide the static IP, Subnet Mask, Default gateway,
primary DNS and secondary DNS.
3. Change Wireless Network Name, Wireless
Password, Save and Finish. You need now to
connect to network.
WAN Connection Type
DYNAMIC IP if your internet connection is Plug and Play or running DHCP.
STATIC IP if your internet service provider provides you an IP, subnet mask, gateway
setting.
PPPoE if the internet service provider provides you username
