ME-209 Thermodynamics-I 2020-2021 Assignment (23.11.

2020)
Property Tables: A-4, A-5, A-6, A-7
DURATION: 90 min for solution, 30 min for converting and uploading the solution file.

NOTE #1: Use only the property tables provided in the question file.
NOTE #2: Take the closest value while using tables, do not perform interpolation.
NOTE #3: Write your name and student number on EVERY page.
NOTE #4: Take photos of your answer sheets in order and convert them into a SINGLE “.pdf file”.
File name must have the order: Student ID_Name of the student
NOTE #5: Upload a SINGLE “.pdf file” (Not photos !!!) via Microsoft Teams (Do not send e-mails!).
NOTE #6: Some data in the questions below are linked to your student number.

YOUR ANSWER SHEET SHOULD INCLUDE THE TABLE BELOW (Write your number into the
boxes)
Your student no →
a b

Example: For a student with a student number of 2008257015, a=1 and b=5
Example student no → 2 0 0 8 2 5 7 0 1 5
a b

1. (16p) A family wants to replace their 25 year old gas-fired combi boiler (24 kW) where the unit cost
of natural gas is ₺0.15/kWh. The current combi has 60% efficiency and operated for (a+2) hours a
day for 3 months each year. The family wants to make a decision whether to buy a new combi with
90% efficiency and ₺4000 cost. Give your suggestion to this family whether to buy the new one or
keep the current one considering a simple payback period of 5 years.

2. (24p) Complete the table below for water.

YOUR ANSWER SHEET SHOULD INCLUDE THE TABLE BELOW
State T P h u v Phase description
(0C) (kPa) (kJ/kg) (kJ/kg) (m3/kg)
1 250 u=2616+8(a+b)
u=
2 T=5(a+b) 1750
T=
3 70 31.202
4 750 h=790+130(a+b)
h=

3. (30p) A variable-load piston-cylinder device contains air (cp = 1.005 kJ/kgK; cv = 0.718 kJ/kgK) at
500 kPa and T=6(a+b) oC. A paddle wheel equipped within the system and turned by an external
electric motor until 65 kJ/kg of work has been transferred to the air. During this process the gas
volume is quadrupled while maintaining the temperature constant by transferring heat to the gas.
Determine (a) the final pressure, (b) the amount of required heat transfer (c) Show this process on a
P-v diagram. Do not use Table A-17 while solving this problem.
YOUR ANSWER SHEET SHOULD INCLUDE THE SOLUTION AND THE TABLE BELOW
(a) Pfinal [kPa] =
(b) q [kJ/kg] =
4. (30p) A frictionless piston-cylinder device with a set of stops on the top contains 3 kg of water at 500
kPa and T[oC]=200+100 b. Now heat is transferred from the water to the surroundings. The piston starts
moving down ONLY after pressure decreases to 200 kPa. More heat is transferred from the water to the
surroundings until the piston reaches to the bottom stops. At this moment the water is saturated liquid.
Determine (a) the final temperature (b) the total work done (c) the total heat transfer (d) show the process
on a P-v diagram (the diagram should include the saturation dome and constant T lines and values).

YOUR ANSWER SHEET SHOULD INCLUDE THE SOLUTION AND THE TABLE BELOW
(a) final temperature (oC) =
(b) total work done (kJ) =
(c) total heat transfer (kJ) =
