PRELIMINARY

1.1 Background

Sports is a human need, exercise is very important for one's body, in addition

to filling in our spare time, exercise can also maintain health in our bodies, by

exercising a body that was originally weak and lazy will change to be fresher and

fit again. Sports According to the Big Indonesian Dictionary is a body exercise to

strengthen and nourish the body (such as football, swimming, throwing the javelin).

By doing sports activities, the effect that we will get immediately afterwards will

make our bodies strong and healthy because the muscles we have will be trained

because of continuous contraction and relaxation when we do sports. Sport is also

an activity where there is no need to differentiate between race, religion, social

status, or gender (Soegiyanto, 2013: 19). According to the sports system law no. 25

of 2005, sports are divided into 3 categories, the first is recreational sports,

recreational sports themselves are sports that are done just for fun or for leisure time

only, there is no time limit nor are there any rules that must be obeyed, then that is

secondly there are sports education, sports education itself is within the scope of

education such as schools, universities and

1
2

On the other hand, usually within the scope of school there are sports subjects so

that children can carry out sports activities, in sports education is bound by the

curriculum, so that the teacher only provides material according to the existing

curriculum, to deepen sports activities when in school usually in the school they

add hours sports in the afternoon which are usually called extracurricular activities,

then the third one is achievement sports, achievement sports themselves are more

focused on athletes with certain sports, there is a need for coaching to achieve the

desired achievements, usually done in the city to support the achievements of a city

the. With good achievements will make a pride for family, school, yourself, Even

if you can get excellent achievements that can make a city of pride the athlete comes

from, sport is also a barometer for the progress of the nation. It will be a pride for a

nation when it has good sports achievements. Therefore, the creation of the quality

of Human Resources (HR) in the field of sports starts early, so it must be prepared

as early as possible to get maximum achievements in the future. Good achievements

are usually in children aged 18 to 24 years, therefore the development of prospective

athletes should be when children are 4-14 years old, which should be taken while

attending Junior High School (Kemenpora, 2005). Preparing children from an early

age will make them more mature / ready to become athletes because the time they

spend on training is quite a lot. Improving sports performance is very important to

be carried out regularly and starting as early as possible through several talent

search and monitoring activities based on quality science and technology and for

all organizations engaged in sports to work optimally both at the central and

regional levels. (Firdaus, 2011: 128). The development of sports achievement is

3

also the result of a combination of physical, technical, tactical, and mental sports of

the athlete which is obtained through a proper coaching process. The success of

achievement in sports is also determined by the level of training according to the

child's age level (Soetardji & Dwikusworo, 2013: 36).

This problem also occurs because the interests and talents of the child are not

in line in the sense that the child takes part in competitions only according to the

interests of the child without knowing his talents. To excel in sports, it is important

that children do sports activities according to what they like, but it is better if they

are not only training according to the sport they like, they must also practice

according to their talents. So that the aspects of interests and talents can be

integrated into supporting children's achievement so that they can get peak

performance. This is obtained from the development of good sports talent, it is said

that it is good if the selection of interests in sports is in accordance with one's talents,

so that the development can be carried out effectively (Indarto, Subekti, &

Sudarmanto, 2018: 57). Almost all junior high schools in Rembang Regency have

yet to carry out talent search activities because maybe this is still unfamiliar to do,

therefore it is necessary to hold periodic and systematic achievement coaching.

Actually, there are already additional hours of sports in the afternoon which are

usually referred to as extracurricular activities, but it is lacking because the

recruitment is only in accordance with the interests of those who will join the extras

without seeing the actual talents they have, so that the achievements achieved are

not optimal. To get maximum achievement, it is necessary to recruit talented

athletes which will be very useful for the advancement of students' sports
4

achievements because one's achievement will develop more rapidly if it is in

accordance with one's talents and postures, not only with his wishes and interests

alone. With his talents, the child is able to learn new skills quickly, therefore by

knowing the child's talents, the development of the body will also develop rapidly

like the child's strength, agility and speed. The childhood of these children can also

be called the golden age where children will learn new things very quickly, also at

this time children experience rapid growth and development. This is also

strengthened by Kemenpora, (2005, in Jamalong, 2014:

In Rembang Regency, to prepare for various competitions / championships,

teachers or coaches still rely on manual methods or with the feeling that in choosing

athletes, they usually use 3 methods, the first is by looking at physical education

lesson hours, the second is by choosing athletes who actively participate in

extracurricular activities in school the third designates students who are active in

participating in sports clubs. So it can be said that they have not been able to identify

the talents of the child to participate in the championship.

By carrying out the process of scouting talent through the sport search

method, it is hoped that coaches and teachers will be more accurate in selecting

prospective athletes by looking at their talents and also getting new options in

choosing athletes besides only using manual techniques that are usually done. With

this sports search method, the data obtained will also be more abundant and

complete so that later this can be used as a reference by teachers and coaches and

can also develop athletes by looking at data about the basic abilities of athletes that

have been obtained from the talent scouting process using the sport search method.
5

To get information related to the talent scouting program for students aged

11-15 years and the suitability between the interests and talents of students who are

the focus of the problem to be addressed, researchers conducted observations in

several junior high schools in Rembang Regency. From the results of the survey

conducted by researchers at SMP Negeri 2 Rembang, SMP Negeri 1 Rembang,

SMP Negeri 6 Rembang, SMP Negeri 2 Sulang, and SMP Negeri 2 Kaliori, it can

be concluded that from the 5 schools there has never been a talent scouting test. via

the sport search method.

In conducting talent scouting requires the right method in order to get accurate

results. The analytical method used in this research is statistical calculation using

sports search software which is one of several programs developed by The

Australian Sports Commission as part of AUSSIE SPORT (a comprehensive

approach from the state to the development of sports among youth). This method is

also a method adopted by KONI (Hadi, 2019: 122). This means that this method is

also a reference for talent scouting methods that can be applied to children in

Indonesia.

The test carried out for the sport search method is a field test that is easy to

do and only requires simple tools and is easy to obtain and prepare so that when

data collection is carried out we focus more on the sample and measurement results

from the test. Likewise, using the test and simple implementation will increase the

flexibility of the researcher in carrying out tests in the field and the tools are also

easy to prepare when the test is carried out anywhere without looking at the previous
6

school conditions so it doesn't take much time to prepare the test equipment and can

easily operate the equipment. the test.

By looking at this background, it is necessary to hold a sports talent scouting

for junior high school students in Rembang Regency. Therefore, the researcher

raised the title "Tracing Sports Interest and Talent in Junior High School Students

in Rembang Regency for the 2019/2020 Academic Year".

1.2 Identification of problems

Based on the background discussed above, the problems in this study can be

identified as follows:

1. There has never been any research on interest and talent through the sport

search method on junior high school students in Rembang Regency.

2. It is not yet known what talents junior high school students in Rembang

Regency have.

3. There is no match between the interests and talents of SMP students in

Rembang Regency.

4. The talent scouting process has not been carried out in junior high school

students in Rembang Regency.

1.3 Restricting the problem

Based on the background and problem identification above, to avoid

misinterpretation this problem needs to be limited.

The limitations in this problem are as follows: The researcher took the research

sample of junior high school students aged 11 to 15 years and currently in class VII
7

(seven) and class VII (eight) at SMP Negeri 2 Rembang, SMP Negeri 1 Rembang,

SMP Negeri 6 Rembang, SMP Negeri 2 Sulang, and SMP Negeri 2 Kaliori,

Rembang Regency.

1.4 Formulation of the problem

Based on the above background, the problem formulations in this research

are:

1. What sports interests do students have at SMP Negeri 2 Rembang, SMP Negeri

1 Rembang, SMP Negeri 6 Rembang, SMP Negeri 2 Sulang, and SMP Negeri

2 Kaliori.

2. What sports talents do students at SMP Negeri 2 Rembang, SMP Negeri 1

Rembang, SMP Negeri 6 Rembang, SMP Negeri 2 Sulang, and SMP Negeri 2

Kaliori have.

3. What are the dominant sports for students at SMP Negeri 2 Rembang, SMP

Negeri 1 Rembang, SMP Negeri 6 Rembang, SMP Negeri 2 Sulang, and SMP

Negeri 2 Kaliori.

4. Is there a match between the interests and talents of students at SMP Negeri 2

Rembang, SMP Negeri 1 Rembang, SMP Negeri 6 Rembang, SMP Negeri 2

Sulang, and SMP Negeri 2 Kaliori.

1.5 Research purposes

Based on the problems formulated above, this study aims to:

1. Knowing the sports interests of students at SMP Negeri 2 Rembang, SMP

Negeri 1 Rembang, SMP Negeri 6 Rembang, SMP Negeri 2 Sulang, and SMP

Negeri 2 Kaliori.
8

2. Knowing the sports talents of students at SMP Negeri 2 Rembang, SMP Negeri

1 Rembang, SMP Negeri 6 Rembang, SMP Negeri 2 Sulang, and SMP Negeri

2 Kaliori.

3. Knowing the dominant sports in students at SMP Negeri 2 Rembang, SMP

Negeri 1 Rembang, SMP Negeri 6 Rembang, SMP Negeri 2 Sulang, and SMP

Negeri 2 Kaliori.

4. Knowing the suitability between the interests and talents of students at SMP

Negeri 2 Rembang, SMP Negeri 1 Rembang, SMP Negeri 6 Rembang, SMP

Negeri 2 Sulang, and SMP Negeri 2 Kaliori.

1.6 Benefits of Research

Some of the benefits that are expected to be obtained in this study include:

1.6.1 Theoretical Benefits

Finding gifted children in the field of sports who know what talents they have

so that early and specific coaching and development can be carried out so that it

will produce maximum results and can develop the world of Indonesian sports to

be more advanced. And with this kind of talent scouting, schools will find it easier

to recruit athletes for extracurricular activities that are more efficient and of high

quality because students recruited into extracurricular activities match their talents.

1.6.2 Practical Benefits

Can help parents and teachers to identify the talents that students have.

Adding insight and knowledge for schools, physical education teachers and parents

about the known sports talents of students and directing them appropriately and

according to the sports talents possessed by students. And physical education

9

teachers can immediately place students in the right extracurricular activities

according to their talents.

1.7 Research Originality

Talent scouting, talent search, talent analysis, or talent identification is a

theme that is often raised in a study, not only in this study. Several previous

studies have carried a theme like this. However, some of the research carried

out has a point of view, focuses on different aspect and different variable.

The following are some of the previous studies, which are used as references

to show originality :

Some of the studies that are relevant to this research are:

1. Research conducted by Muchammad Arif Yulianto (2017)

entiled “Analysis of Talent Scouting with the Sport Search

Method for class V students of Elementary School 1 Ampel

2016/2017. This study with District Area.

2. Research conducted by Abdul Rochman (2018) entiled “Talent

scouting Analysis with the Soport Search Method for Boys Class

CHAPTER II

THEORETICAL BASIS

2.1 The Essence of Sports

Sport is an important requirement for humans, apart from filling in their spare

time, sport can also maintain one's health. According to the Big Indonesian

Dictionary, sports are exercises to strengthen and nourish the body (such as football,

swimming, throwing the javelin). Sports are practiced by all humans from young

children to adults, the purpose of which they exercise depends on their individual

needs, for example for healing, for recreation, for achievement, for education, and

for health. Sports are all physical activities that are based on the spirit to tire yourself

and others, which are carried out in a knight manner so that sports are a means to

improve the quality and expression of a higher life with fellow humans (Law on the

main provisions of sports of 1997 article 1).

The essence of sport is every activity physical struggle which is based on the

struggle to control oneself, to control other people or the elements of nature, which

if competed must be carried out in a chivalrous manner, so that it is a formidable

means of personal education (Lutfiani, Junaidi, & Nugroho, 2012: 22)This means

that sports in a match do not only rely on physical, but also must be mentally

prepared, also must be able to be kind to friends and

10
11

opponents, because basically the main principle of sport is to uphold

sportsmanship.

Exercise is very important because it can train the muscles in our body so that

the body that initially feels weak after doing sports activities feels fresher or fresher.

According toArifin, Fallo, & Sastaman, (2017: 130), sport is a part of life and needs

of every human being.

2.2 Interest

Interest is a high heart tendency towards something (Saraswati, 2008).

Interest can arise because of a sense of pleasure or a positive attitude. A positive

attitude is divided into 3 characteristics, 1) (1) interest creates a positive attitude

from an object, (2) interest is something that is pleasant and arises from an object

and (3) interest contains an element of appreciation, resulting in a desire and

excitement to get something desired (Saraswati, 2008). Children's interest in sports

can be seen from the child who likes to do certain sports in the surrounding

environment or in places that facilitate sports activities, in doing sports that are of

interest to the child, he will feel happy during training and during competitions in

sports that are of interest to the child.

2.2.1 Factors affecting interest

Interest will not grow alone in a human body, but must go through a process,

either from the environment or from other people, so that interest will grow from a

person. According to Siti Rahayu Haditono in Dwi Hari Subekti (2007: 8) interest

is influenced by two factors:

12

a. Internal factor (intrinsic), which means that something is desired because

someone likes to do it. Here the interest comes from within the person himself.

People like to do that action for the sake of the act itself. Such as pleasure, have

more attention, enthusiasm, motivation, emotions.

b. External factors (extrinsic) that an action is carried out at the instigation /

implementation from outside. People do that because they are pushed / forced

from outside. Such as the environment, parents, teachers. It can be concluded

from the above opinions that the factors of a person's interest are influenced by

two factors, namely factors from within the student itself (intrinsic) which

includes attention, feelings of pleasure, and activity then external factors

(extrinsic) which include the role of teachers and facilities. . in following

physical education learning.

2.2.2 Forming Interest and Motivation for Exercising in Children

Each child will have different interests in sports activities, depending on the

child's fun and intentions in doing sports activities. The results of research that has

been conducted byRR Eiferman (1971) on children to find out at what age children

are interested in participating in sports activities, the results show that:

1. At the age of 8-11 years the interest in sports is great.

2. The participation of parents as supporting figures includes the provision of

facilities and creating a conducive atmosphere including acceptance, positive

association, and positive reinforcement.

13

3. It focuses more on intrinsic motivation than on extrinsic motivation, meaning

that sport is a fun activity (fostering interest and pleasure).

4. The role of other people (for example the trainer) as a driver in instilling interest

and encouragement to achieve.

5. Support and recognition from the government and the community that sports

that are carried out are something that creates separate activities (assessment,

appreciation and intensive).

2.3 Talent

According to KBBI, talent is basic (intelligence, character, and nature) that

are born from birth. One of the most popular types of talent is natural talent. This

natural talent is an ability that is present from birth.People in ancient times

considered talent as something very special that was owned by someone from birth.

Therefore at that time people thought that a person who had talent was thought to

be very easy to learn something that was his talent, and vice versa, a person who

did not have talent would find it very difficult to master something that was not his

talent. this has developed in society and has become stereotyped so that many

children cannot develop their talents to the fullest. However, most parents in many

villages do not pay attention to the talents of their children so that the child will be

confused in developing or deepening his talents. In the end, the child will choose

what he likes rather than develop his talents.and tracked their abilities precisely and

accurately so that later the process of fostering and developing the child can be

carried out (Nihayah, 2015: 136).

14

According to Leider and Shapiro (in Aprilianto, 2017: 25) our talents are

special inborn tendencies, forces behind the things we enjoy and do well that we

never need to learn.Expressing our talents is something we do naturally, easily, and

unconditionally, while talent in the sense of language or in the sense that we

generally understand, is a natural advantage / advantage that sticks to us and

becomes the difference between us and other children. Each child will have

different talents even though sometimes there are also those who have the same

talent but the level of the child's talent is different, for example there are 2 children

who have the same skills in playing volleyball, but one child is faster at mastering

the technique than the child who only one, therefore there are similarities in talent

but different degrees. have the same talents but not necessarily on the same level.

According to Asrori (2009, in Fadillah, 2016: 117), talent is the natural ability

to acquire knowledge and skills, both general and specific. A person's talent is likely

to be accomplished in a certain field. To turn talent into an achievement requires

practice, knowledge, experience and motivation. So, talent cannot just develop into

an achievement without going through a long process. To produce optimal

performance, a talent must get good treatment and the talent owner must have the

motivation to develop his talent.

Although talent is critical to achievement, the mature value of genetically

driven variables cannot always be predicted from immature values. For example,

height is often considered to be favorable for performance in a variety of sports (eg

High jump and volleyball). This still requires further study(Abbott, Button,
15

Pepping, & Collins, 2005: 65). Not necessarily people who have a tall body are

talented in sports that require height, such as volleyball and basketball.

A person's achievements are very much determined by their abilities and

talents. so that the resulting achievements in a field are a reflection of superior

abilities and talents (Candra, 2016: 3). It can be concluded that from a high

achievement one of the important factors that influence this achievement is talent.

A good achievement cannot be separated by the level of talent an athlete has. Not

only talent, but motivation and experience also determine achievement.

The survey results show that athletes who have talent and are supported by

high motivation in training can achieve maximum performance (Zhannisa &

Sugiyanto, 2015: 118). This is also strengthened byGunarsa(1992, in Utami, 1389:

57) view sports talent as a potential that is owned by a person, to excel in certain

activities or sports, In the process of developing talent, not only aspects of an athlete

are influencing, but there are several other aspects that are no less important and

these aspects will also affect the results of the talent development itself. The first is

the availability of an appropriate training program and well-scheduled

competitions. In addition, it must also be supported by the existence of adequate

facilities and infrastructure and relevant knowledge. With the existence of adequate

facilities and infrastructure and relevant knowledge, the development of talents will

be faster and more efficient, both in the search and in the selection and development

process.(Purnomo, 2014: 29).

16

2.4 Talent Scouting

Every child has different talents and various kinds, depending on the

inheritance of each child since the child was born it can be said to be natural.

According to KBBI, it is the basis (intelligence, character, and nature) that is born

from birth. Talent can also be interpreted as an innate ability of a person, which is

a potential that must be further developed and trained in order to achieve dreams

that will be realized (SC, Utami Munandar, 1985).Children who have talent in

sports are very much needed because they are able to think creatively and

innovatively in the sports they are engaged in, but in certain areas, parents rarely

pay attention to the talents of their children, so that the children's talents do not. can

be done to the maximum. If the child already knows his talents and feels attracted

to his talents, then these talents can be maximally developed and later will get

achievements with maximum results.

Scouting and coaching talents must be interconnected because it will affect

athletes who excel, the goals to be achieved through scouting and coaching sports

talents from an early age in general, namely helping to realize the development of

national character and character in Indonesia's national development as a whole, so

that it is ready to be developed in various branches sports to achieve achievements

both at the regional, national and international levels. Athlete development is very

important for an athlete, because it will affect his level of achievement. The

development of talented athletes is one of the centers for fostering sports

achievement at the regional level (Tommy Soenyoto, 2017: 9). To achieve

maximum results, early development must be carried out consistently,

continuously, fundamentally, systematically, efficiently and in an integrated

17

manner. Systematic according to Bangun & Sabaruddin Yunis (2012 in JPES by

Ucu Muhammad) is that the development of sports achievement must be developed

systematically, starting from an early age, mass, tiered to elite athlete level, for all

sports. The national team in all sports is the culmination of a continuous sports

coaching process.

With talent scouting, it is hoped that many athletes will undergo training in

accordance with the talents they have had from the start. This prevents athletes from

stopping in the middle of their training because it turns out that their talents in the

sport they are engaged in are not suitable because they only follow their interests..

According to Slameto (2010, in Wulansari, Kristiyanto, & Doewes, 2017:

347)Interest can also be interpreted as a feeling of preference and a sense of

belonging to an activity, without being asked. Interest is basically the acceptance of

a relationship between oneself and something outside oneself. The stronger or

closer the relationship, the greater the person's interest.

Talent scouting is an effort carried out systematically to identify a potential

athlete / athlete) who has the potential in the field of sports, so that it is estimated

that someone will be successful in the training process and be able to achieve peak

achievement / golden age (Tommy Soenyoto, 2017: 5). According to Khouirunnisa,

Purwono, & Raharjo (2012: 157)the role of identifying early childhood talent is

very important in the talent scouting and coaching program of an athlete to achieve

peak performance. This is corroborated by the main objective of sports talent

scouting is to estimate how much talent a person has the opportunity to undergo an

exercise program so that he can achieve high achievement. So that the success of
18

an athlete to achieve the highest achievement can be realized if the sports that are

followed are in accordance with the talents possessed by the athlete.

Early childhood talent identification can also shorten the time it takes for an

athlete to reach peak performance and be able to increase competitiveness among

athletes in undergoing training programs. This is because research in talent

identification is defined as the process of recognizing participants in their early

stages who have the potential to excel in a particular sport(Till et al., 2016: 2). So,

we can know that talent scouting must be done as early as possible.

According to Ziegler & Shi, (2010: 119)identifying and developing gifted

individuals is an essential element of education, music, and the arts. But no field is

as embraced as sport. Indeed understanding the qualities underpinning the

performance of elites and experts in facilitating their development is the cornerstone

of sports science. The identification and scouting of sports talents can be done

anywhere, one of which is at school.

School is a very good place and suitable in identifying student tendencies in

terms of sports in particular. Because in school students get physical education

subjects, and school is also a place where they explore their world when interacting

with their peers. For this reason, it is hoped that parents and teachers can direct

children according to their talents so that they can achieve maximum development

and achievement.

Actually nursery is a very important process because nursery is the beginning

of a process that will lead to the maximum achievement an athlete will get.

Coaching is no less important because after the nursery process is carried out, the
19

coaching process must then be carried out. Even though there has been a good

nursery process, if it is not continued with optimal coaching, the results will not be

maximized. Even in the worst case, athletes can fail in their efforts to achieve

achievement because even though they have gone through a good nursery process,

they are not followed by proper coaching. This was also confirmed bySaputro

(2014: 1318) which says that sports nurseries are organized in a structured pattern

according to the developmental function of athletes at the age of nursery.

Talent scouting with sports search is a talent identification model that can be

done from an early age which consists of 10 types of tests that aim to help children

find children's potential in sports that are tailored to the characteristics and potential

of the child. The ten types of tests are: (1) height, (2) sitting height, (3) body weight,

(4) arm span, (5) throwing a tennis ball, (6) throwing a basketball; (7) jumping

upright, (8) running agility, (9) sprinting 40 meters, and (10) running multiple

stages.

The sports search method talent scouting assumes that every child has sports

talent. This means that each child can be directed to the most suitable sports for the

child among the existing sports according to the child's characteristics. Some of the

physical characteristics that are assessed are: strength, flexibility, speed, endurance,

and power(Mkaouer, Hammoudi-Nassib, Amara, & Chaabène, 2018: 388). From

each of these characteristics, there will be some that will stand out from a child who

takes a sports search test and can be a reference to determine a child's talent. The

benefits that will be obtained are not only for children and researchers, but teachers
20

and schools will get benefits that will have a big influence on the school's sports

achievement.

2.5 Talent Identification

Talent scouting (sport search) as an alternative that can be offered at centers

of education, coaching and sports development of gifted students. Sport Search is

an innovative and innovative approach to help guide children (aged 11-15 years) to

make informed decisions about the world of sport, which are not only interesting

but also according to their preferences.(Permana, 2013: 128). The hope of holding

talent scouting using the sport search method is that students can pursue the sport

that is their interest and become their talents as well.

Talent identification using the Sport Search method is a talent identification

model consisting of 10 test items aimed at helping children (aged 11-15) years, to

find children's potential in sports that are tailored to the characteristics and potential

of the child. The ten test items include: (1) Height; (2) sitting height; (3) Body

weight; (4) Arm span; (5) Throw and catch a tennis ball; (6) throw a basketball; (7)

Jump upright; (8) Running Agility; (9) Sprint 40 meters; and (10) Multi-stage

running.

This test is a field test that is easy to carry out and requires simple equipment

and is easy to prepare. However, there are still some obstacles related to aspects of

data processing and analysis, because the talent scouting test using the Sport Search

method, the results are processed and analyzed with the help of computers. In fact,

there are still many trainers and physical education teachers who are not yet able to
21

operate computers. Therefore, it is necessary to look for efforts to overcome this

problem so that the test can be carried out properly.

2.6 Benefits of Talent Identification

The use of scientific criteria in the talent identification process has several

benefits (Rumini, 2011: 4).

1) Reducing the time needed to achieve certain high achievements and selecting

potential athletes who are talented in certain sports.

2) Eliminates high volume of work, energy and separates talent for the coach. The

effectiveness of training can be achieved especially for prospective athletes

who have high abilities.

3) Increase competitiveness and the number of athletes in achieving high levels

of achievement.

4) Increase the confidence of prospective athletes, because the progress in

achievement is more dramatic compared to athletes of the same age who have

undergone selection.

5) Indirectly facilitate the application of training.

2.7 Sport Search Modification Talent Scouting

Talent identification using the Sport Search method is a talent identification

model consisting of 10 test items aimed at helping children (aged 11-15) years, to

find children's potential in sports that are tailored to the characteristics and potential

of the child. The ten test items include: (1) Height; (2) sitting height; (3) Body

weight; (4) Arm span; (5) Throw and catch a tennis ball; (6) throw a basketball; (7)

Jump upright; (8) Running Agility; (9) Sprint 40 meters; and (10) Multi-stage
22

running. This test is a field test that is easy to carry out and requires simple

equipment and is easy to prepare. However, there are still some obstacles related to

aspects of data processing and analysis, because the talent scouting test using the

Sport Search method, the results are processed and analyzed with the help of

computers. In reality, there are still many trainers and physical education teachers

who are not yet able to operate computers. Therefore, it is necessary to look for

efforts to overcome this problem so that the test can be carried out properly.
CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODS

3.1 Type and Research Design

This type of research is based on its objective is descriptive quantitative

research, which is used to examine a specific population or sample also through a

survey test before sampling. The sampling technique was carried out by purposive

sampling, data collection using research instruments, quantitative data analysis with

the aim of testing the hypothesis set (Sugiyono, 2010: 14) in the Journal of Active

Unnes by Langgeng Asmoro Budi Mardanto and Rumini 2016.

According to Siyoto and Sodik (2015: 17) in quantitative research methods,

the problems studied are more generally having a wide area, a complex level of

variation. Quantitative research is more systematic, planned, structured, clear from

the beginning to the end of the study. However, the problems in qualitative research

methods are in a narrow area with a low level of variation, but from this research it

can be broadly developed according to conditions in the field.

In this study using a survey method to determine the potential of existing

students. Data were collected by giving 10 test items to be carried out by students,

which then wrote all the data in

23
24

obtained which later the data will be processed using sports search software or

applications which will then be analyzed to produce a conclusion.

3.2 Research variable

The research variable is anything in the form determined by the researcher to

study so that information is obtained about it, then conclusions are drawn

(Sugiyono, 2016: 60).

According to Hatch and Farhady (Sugiyono, 2016: 60) variables can be

defined as attributes of a person, or object, which have "variations" between one

person and another or one object to another. This means that the variable includes

not only one type but has many types of the object which will be examined later.

In Sugiyono (2010: 60) states that the research variable is anything in the form

determined by the researcher to be studied in order to obtain information about it,

then draw conclusions. From some of the explanations above, the variables in this

study are junior high school students in Rembang Regency for the 2019/2020

academic year being the dependent variable and 10 test components consisting of:

: 1) Height, 2) Sitting height (position), 3) Weight, 4) Wide arm span, 5) Ability to

throw and catch a tennis ball, 6) Ability to throw the basketball, 7) Vertical jump

height, 8 ) Running agility, 9) Sprinting 40 meters, 10) Multilevel Fitness Test

which is independent variable.

25

3.3 Population, Samples, and Research Sampling Techniques

3.3.1 Research Population

Population is a generalization area consisting of: objects / subjects that have

certain qualities and characteristics that are determined by researchers to study and

then draw conclusions (Sugiyono, 2016: 117). The population of this study were

students and junior high school students grade VII and VIII in Rembang Regency.

3.3.2 Research Samples

The sample is part of the total characteristics of the population (Sugiyono,

2016: 118).Data collection in quantitative research is carried out on certain objects,

both population and sample. If the researcher is going to make generalizations about

them, the samples taken must be representative (Siyoto & Sodik 2015: 38). The

samples taken in this study were SMP N 1 Rembang, SMP N 2 Rembang, SMP N

6 Rembang, SMP N 2 Kaliori, SMP N 2 Sulang by doing tests that were carried out

only partially in class VII and class VIII which were in the range 11-15 years old.

Table 3.1 Data on the Number of Research Samples

2. SMP Negeri 2 Rembang 31 students
3. SMP Negeri 6 Rembang 30 students

4. Kaliori 2 Junior High School 32 students

5. SMP Negeri 2 Sulang 27 students

total 149 students

3.3.3 Sampling Technique

The sampling technique is a technique for taking samples. In this study,

researchers used a "purposive sampling" technique. Purposive sampling is a
sampling technique with certain considerations (Sugiyono, 2016: 1240). As for the
consideration for researchers in this case is the limited time because research is
taken during sports lessons, school infrastructure and funds, as well as the
geographic location of the school whether easy or difficult to reach. Also the age of
the students to be studied is also a limitation in this study.

3.4 Data Retrieval Technique

Data collection technique is the most important step in research because in

research the objective is to get data. According to the title and purpose of this study,

namely the search for sports interests and talents of children aged 11 to 15 years. In

this case the researcher uses 2 kinds of data collection techniques. To obtain data

on student interest in sports activities, we used a structured interview technique.

And to find data about the giftedness of a child used the sports search aptitude test

technique. The two techniques are described as follows:

27

3.4.1 Sport Search Talent Test

In collecting data, it is necessary to apply test and measurement methods. The

test is used to measure the ability of the object under study(Arikunto, 2014: 266).

In this study, using a test with the sport search method, which is a talent

identification model consisting of 10 test items to find potential sports talents that

match the characteristics and talents of children in the 11 to 15 year age range

(Soenyoto, 2017: 11). The ten test items are: 1) Height, 2) Sitting height, 3) Weight,

4) Arm span, 5) Throw and catch a tennis ball, 6) Throw basketball, 7) Jump

straight, 8) Run agility, 9) Running 40 meters, 10) Multi-stage running.

From the data obtained, it will be analyzed and compared with the assessment

guidelines which contain basic data or characteristics of various sports. What will

be the results of matching these data will classify a child as gifted in a particular

sport.

3.4.2 Interview

The interview or interview is a data collection technique that is used if the

researcher wants to conduct a preliminary study to find problems that must be

researched. And interviews are used to find personal data, which the respondents

themselves know better (Sugiyono, 2016: 194), in this case, the interest in sports.

Sutrisno Hadi (1996) explained in Sugiyono (2016) that the basic assumptions or

principles that must be held by researchers in using the interview method and also

the questionnaire are as follows:

28

1. Respondents are people who know best about themselves,

2. What the respondent said was true and could be trusted,

3. The respondent's interpretation or understanding of the questions given is the

same as what the researcher meant.

Interviews can be carried out in a structured or unstructured manner, and can

be carried out face-to-face or through the media of telecommunications devices

(Sugiyono, 2016: 194). In this study, the unstructured interview technique was used

because the interviews were conducted flexibly according to the situations and

conditions. Interviews were conducted with teachers and students during sports

lessons. Therefore, this unstructured interview technique is more effective because

it will obtain a lot of data through developing questions to the source.

3.5 Research Instruments

Arranging instruments must be considered because the function of the

instrument is as a tool in the data collection process so that the data obtained is easy

to process. The form of the instrument also adjusts and relates to the data collection

method (Siyoto & Sodik, 2015: 78). From the expert opinion above, it can be

concluded that the research instrument is a tool used to collect data in a study which

will make it easier for researchers to process data.

3.5.1 Sports Search Talent Scouting Instrument

The sports search talent scout has the view that every child has sports talent.

Soenyoto, (2017: 27) explains some of the instructions for implementing the sports

search talent identification test as follows:

1) General Instructions
29

Before being implemented, it is necessary to pay attention to general matters

as follows:

a. All equipment and facilities found including the recording format of the

results must be prepared. Equipment and facilities are in good condition

and meet the requirements.

b. Prospective students who take the test must be in good health, proven by a

certificate from a doctor or we can also conclude from the information of

the teacher who teaches Physical Education at the school.

c. Students need to be arranged so that they do not accumulate on certain test

posts / items.

d. The tests may be carried out in a different order from the one in this

manual, except for round-trip and multi-stage running test items, which

must be performed on the last turn.

e. Test administrators should already have knowledge and experience in tests

and measurements or at least previously trained in order to carry out tasks

properly and correctly.

f. Students must wear appropriate sports clothing (sportswear). These clothes

should be worn while taking the test, except on certain test items that

require otherwise (eg shoes must be removed for height and weight

measurements).

g. Students should be given heating which includes static and dynamic

heating.

2) Order of Execution
30

There are 10 test items in sports search. The administration of all test items

in a 90-minute session is possible with a 10: 1 ratio between tester and tester. It is

necessary to arrange the order of the test items in 2 or more parts. The expected

sequence of carrying out the test is that the first part includes: measuring height,

sitting height, body weight, arm span, and throwing a tennis ball catch. Then the

second part includes: throwing basketball, jumping upright, running agility,

sprinting 40 meters, and running multistage. It should be noted that the multistage

run is performed last in the second part.

3) Place of execution

For the test site, you can use the sports hall or part of the sports hall, and it

can be done in sports fields and buildings that have walls. The place must have a

floor that is not slippery, especially for the implementation of agility running. The

40 meter sprint needs to be measured and carried out in an open place, the track

must be straight, level and placed in a transverse wind. If using a grassy surface,

choose a dry surface.

4) Clothes

Testi must wear proper sports clothing and wear sports shoes. This garment

should be used for the entire test unless there are exceptions specifically stated in

the test procedure (e.g. removing shoes for height measurement)

5) Preparation

The testi must do a thorough warm-up including light aerobic activity and

stretching both in the upper and lower body before playing basketball, jumping
31

upright, running agility, sprinting 40 meters, and running multi-stage. However,

you shouldn't overheat because the test to be carried out is quite draining.

6) Instructions to the Testi

Testies should be provided with prior information about the tasks and the

purpose of these measurements. In every opportunity, the testi must be encouraged

to do their best. The tester's job is also to motivate testees to take the tests seriously.

7) Trial

The testi must be given the opportunity to do exercises or experiments only

in catching the ball. Such experiments should be carried out so that the testi

understands the requirements for carrying out a particular test and has felt them.

Experiments are not allowed for any of the other test items because 2 tries will be

given, then the best results are recorded from the 2 times the test is carried out. The

testes should be given a break between each test (the tester should test all the testes

and then repeat them for a second test, to give them enough rest).

3.5.2 Guidelines for Sports Search Talent Scouting

Implementers or testers must master all test implementation instructions

from each existing test item so that the implementation runs more smoothly and

efficiently and reduces existing constraints.

3.5.2.1 Height

Height is the vertical distance from the floor to the vertex of the head. This

height is an important factor in various sports. basketball players and rowers, for

example, are usually tall, while gymnasts are often small.

1. Equipment
32

a. Stadiometer or measuring tape that is firmly attached vertically to the

wall with an accuracy level of 0.1 cm. you can also use a measuring tape

made of paper that is attached to the wall.

b. It is recommended that walls do not contain planks that shrink easily.

c. When using a measuring tape, also prepare a right triangle.

d. The floor surface used must be flat and solid.

2. Procedure

a. The testes stood barefoot.

b. The heels are parallel with the arms hanging freely beside the body with

the palms facing the thighs

c. The tester carefully places the head of the testicle behind the ear so that

it is upright and so that the body is fully supine.

d. The testy gaze should be straight forward while taking a deep breath and

standing straight.

e. Try not to lift the testicular heel (tiptoe).

f. If using a stadiometer, lower the platform so that it touches the top of

your head. If using a measuring tape, place the right triangle

perpendicular to the tape measure above the head, then lower it down so

that it touches the top of the head. The results obtained will be printed on

the numbers touched by the penggairs when the position is in accordance

with the procedure.

33

Figure 3.1 Height Measurement Test

(Research in 2019)
3. Assessment

Note the height in the standing position with an accuracy approaching 0.1 cm.

3.5.2.2 Sitting Height

Sitting height is the vertical distance from the base of the surface where the

testes sit to the top (vertex) of the head. This measurement includes the length of

the hat, neck, and up to the length of the head. The ratio of sitting height to standing

height is related to performance in various sports. For example, in a high jump, the

ratio is that the leg is longer than the togok.

1. Equipment

a. Stadiometer or measuring tape affixed vertically, namely the wall, with an

accuracy level of 0.1 cm.

b. The walls that are used do not contain stretchable planks.

c. When using a measuring tape, a right triangle is also required.

d. The floor surface used must be flat.

34

e. Small stool with a height (approx. 40 cm)

2. Procedure

a. Place the stool in the center of the base of the stadiometer or measuring

tape. Students sit on the floor when not using a bench.

b. The testi sits on a bench with both knees forward and bent, while the hands

are resting on the thighs parallel to the floor.

c. The buttocks and shoulders rest lightly toward the stadiometer or tape

measure placed vertically in the midline behind the testes.

d. The tester places the head of the testicle behind the ear so that the body of

the testicle is fully extended.

e. Gaze straight forward, take a breath, and sit upright.

f. If measuring using a stadiometer, lower the platform so that it touches the

top of the head. If using a measuring tape, place a straight triangle on the

tape above your head and lower it down so that it touches the top of your

head.
35

Figure 3.2 Sitting Height Measurement Test

(Research in 2019)

3. Assessment

The height of the tip of the head was recorded to the nearest 0.1 cm. To

measure the sitting height, subtract the stool height from the recorded measurement.

The size of the sitting height (in centimeters) is automatically converted into

a percentage compared to the height, when the result is entered into the software.

3.5.2.3 Weight

Weight is closely related to several sports that require a light body, such as

gymnastics, when compared to sports that require heavier body weight, such as

throwing sports in athletics.

1. Equipment

a. Weighers with an accuracy of up to 0.5 kg are placed on a flat surface.

36

b. The scale of the weighing device must be measured beforehand so that the

tool meets the standard.

2. Procedure

a. Testi was barefoot and in only swimwear or light clothing (such as a T-

shirt and shorts).

b. The weighing device is set to zero.

c. The testi stands upright with body weight evenly distributed in the center

of the weighing device.

Figure 3.3 Weight Measurement Test

(Research in 2019)

3. Assessment

Record testicular body weight to the nearest 0.5 kilogram and if necessary the

weigher is measured first.

3.5.2.4Arm Span

Arm span is distance horizontal between the tip of the middle finger with

the arms stretched sideways at shoulder level. Arm span includes the width of both

shoulders and the length of the upper limbs (hands). Arm span is closely related to
37

sports, as in rowing and throwing, which is a wide arm span, because it is very

beneficial to its performance.

1. Equipment

a. Measuring tape (at least 3 meters long with a level of accuracy up to 0.1

cm) placed horizontally on the wall approximately 1.5 meters above

ground level. The wall corner should be used as the zero point.

b. Ruler

2. Procedure

a. The testes stand straight with their backs against the wall, feet together;

while the heels, buttocks and shoulders touch the wall.

b. Your arms are stretched sideways at shoulder level (horizontally) and your

palms are facing forward. The tips of the middle finger (left and right hand)

join the ends of the measuring tape. If the testi has a tall or short posture,

the testy arm will be above or below the measuring tape. Therefore, stretch

both arms in a horizontal position and use a ruler to line the ends (ends) of

the fingertips up or down to cut the measuring tape.

c. Measure the distance between the tips of the middle finger of the other arm

that is stretched out to the side.

38

Figure 3.4 Arm Span Measurement Test

(Research in 2019)

3. Assessment

Note the span of the arms to the nearest 0.1 cm.

3.5.2.5 Throw and Catch a Tennis Ball

The tennis ball catch throw test aims to measure the testi's ability to throw

a tennis ball with a swing from under the arm to the target and catch it with one

hand, hand-eye coordination in relation to performance in various team ball games

that require athletes to be able to carry, dribble and catch ball.

1. Equipment

a. Tennis ball

b. Gloves

c. Round targets 30 cm in diameter

d. Tape measure
39

e. The tester prepares 2 or 3 targets and assigns between testers to assess each

other, while the tester supervises its implementation to make it more

efficient

2. Procedure

a. The target shall be placed on the wall with the lower end at the level of the

testicular shoulder level.

b. Mark with a line on the ground or floor 2.5 meters from the target using a

tape.

c. Testies are standing behind the line.

d. Testi throws the ball with the preferred hand towards the target then

catches with the same hand. Experiments are allowed so that the testi

understands the task and can feel it (feel for it)

e. The ball must be underarmed and not allowed to bounce on the floor before

it is caught.

f. Each throw is considered valid, if the ball hits the target (any part of the

ball hitting the target is acceptable) and the testi can catch it.

g. Catch is considered valid, if the ball is caught “cleanly” and does not hit

the body.

h. The testi is not allowed to stand in front of the boundary line when catching

the ball.

i. Each testee is given 10 chances to throw and catch with the hand that you

like, followed by 10 times to throw with the hand you like and catch with

the other hand.

40

j. Testi capturing with glasses is allowed to wear glasses while carrying out

this task.

Figure 3.5 Measurement Test for Throw and Catch a Tennis Ball
(Research in 2019)
3. Assessment

a. Each shot that hits the target and is caught red-handed receives 1 point.

b. To be able to get 1 point:

• The ball must be underarmed

• The ball must hit the target

• The ball must be successfully caught without being obstructed by the

body

• Testi does not move or move in front of the boundary line to catch the

ball

c. The total score of the first 10 throws and the 10 second throws. The total

possible score is 20.

3.5.2.6 Throw the Basketball

41

The basketball throw test is designed to measure upper body strength.

Sports that require high strength in the upper body, including wrestling and

weightlifting.

1. Equipment

a. Basketball

b. The measuring tape is 15 meters long with an accuracy level of 5 cm

2. Procedure

a. Testies sit with their buttocks, back and head against the wall. The legs are

rested in a state that extends horizontally to the floor in front of the body.

b. The testi uses both hands raised above the chest to push the ball

horizontally forward as far as possible. It is not allowed to throw using

only the muscles of the shoulders and arms.

c. Give the testi three times to make the throw.

Figure 3.6 Basketball Throw Measurement Test

(Research in 2019)
3. Assessment
42

Record the furthest distance that each testy can throw with an accuracy of

about 5 cm (measure from the bottom of the ball when it comes into contact with

the ground at the first strike).

3.5.2.7 Jump Upright

Upright jumping test is to measure the ability to jump in a vertical direction.

The explosiveness of both feet is related to performance in sports, such as

basketball, volleyball and Australian football.

1. Equipment

a. Powdered lime (talc powder or flour).

b. Planks affixed to the wall with a height from 150 to 350 cm (accuracy level

up to 1 cm).

2. Procedure

a. Testi inserts the tip of the finger used to reach near the board and reaches

up with the inner arm, then touches the board with the tip of the middle

finger to stick the mark at the farthest point that can be reached.

b. Your feet should be flat on the floor, with your arms / hands out as far as

possible.

c. Note the position of the mark up to the nearest 1 cm (reaching the height).

d. The two arms of the testicles must remain in the same position (the

preferred hand / arm is raised in a vertical position and the other arm hangs
43

at the side of the body) while the testes take a squatting position. Testi can

choose a certain depth / low from the squatting position and is allowed to

soar if he wants. The testi is not allowed to swing the arm to support the

momentum of the jump.

e. The testi then jumps upwards to touch the wall at an attainable level with

the inner arm stretched outward.

Figure 3.7 Upright Jump Measurement Test

(Research in 2019)
3. Assessment

a. Note the height that can be reached in the nearest centimeter.

b. Note the attainable height (down to the nearest centimeter) at the highest

jump.

c. Subtract the height of the reach from the jump in centimeters.

3.5.2.8 Running Agility

Agility (the ability to change body direction quickly) is an important

component in most sports, especially team sports.

1. Equipment

a. Stopwatch
44

b. Two parallel lines (1.2 meters long) marked on the ground, the distance

between the lines 5 meters (measured between the two ends of the right

side of each line)

c. 4 pegs or 4 cones

d. The floor surface must be flat, level and not slippery.

2. Procedure

a. Testi starts from behind the line with the front foot stepping on the line

b. At the sound of the signal "Yes" testi ran forward as fast as possible to the

other line, turned and ran back to the starting line.

c. Each time running back and forth is counted as one cycle. The testi did

five cycles,

d. The testi must touch the soles of the feet behind the line and between the

two cones, except at the end of the cycle, when the testy crosses the finish

line without slowing down the run.

e. Start the stopwatch from the “Yes” signal and stop when the runner's chest

crosses the finish line.

f. Give the testi a chance to do it twice.

g. If there is a slip testi do not record the results, and do it again.

45

Figure 3.8 Agility Running Test

(Research in 2019)

3. Assessment

Record the time taken to the nearest 0.1 second to the fastest execution time.

3.5.2.9 Sprint 40 meters

The ability to run quickly from a stationary position is required in team

games, such as basket ball and cricket ball games. Speed is also important in some

sports that require short bursts of activity with high intensity.

1. Equipment

a. Stopwatch

b. 10 pieces of cone or stakes

c. A straight, flat 40 meter running track placed on the cross wind. If the

surface is grassy, the grass must be dry

2. Procedure

a. Mark a 40 meter running track with a cone placed at 10 meter intervals.

46

b. Each testy starts in a standing position, with the forelegs directly above the

starting line.

c. The timers stand at the finish line, shout the signal "ready" and wave the

flag to signal the start of the testes. As soon as the arm is swung, the

timekeeper simultaneously starts the stopwatch being held.

d. Stop the stopwatch when the testi chest has crossed the finish line.

e. Emphasize the testies to run as fast as possible.

f. Testi is allowed to do two times.

Figure 3.9 40 Meter Speed Run Test

(Research in 2019)
3. Assessment

Record the time required for the fastest execution with the nearest 0.1 second

accuracy.

3.5.2.10 Multi stage running

Aerobic fitness is an important component of various sports based on

endurance (endurance). Most team sports require aerobic fitness because the players

have to move for long periods of time. Roundtrip running (Shuttle Run) or
47

Multistage Running (Multistage Fitness Test) is used to assess how fit the players

are.

1. Equipment

a. Cadence tape for back and forth

b. A running track with a flat, level and non-slippery surface

c. Tape recorder and CD Player

d. Stopwatch

e. Conical dividers or pegs 4 pieces

f. Form

2. Procedure

a. The speed of the cassette player or CD player should be checked using a

calibration period of one minute and adjusting the running distance if

necessary (described on the tape and in the tape manual). "Turning on the

tape recorder, at the beginning of the tape, the distance between the tut

signals" marks a 1 minute interval that has been measured accurately. Use

this startup time to make sure that the tape in the cassette has not

"stretched" and also that the tape recorder playing machine is working

properly. Accuracy of 0.5 seconds in any direction. If the time difference

is greater than 0.5 seconds then the distance between the places to run

needs to be changed. The standard time is 60 seconds. Using a stopwatch,

check that the standard time period duration is really 60 seconds.

c. Measure the distances according to the table and mark them with tape and

distance dividers.

d. Run the Cadence Ribbon / CD Player

e. Instruct the testi to run towards the opposite end / end and set one foot

behind the boundary line at the sound of "tuut". If the testi has arrived

before the "tuut" sound, the testy must rely on the play point, wait for the

sound signal, then run towards the opposite line so that it can reach exactly

when the next sign sounds.

f. At the end of each minute the time interval between the two "tuut" sounds

gets shorter, therefore, the running speed gets faster.

49

g. The testi must be able to reach the end line at the appointed time and not

be late. Emphasize the testy to turn and run back, not running makes a

curve, because it will take more time.

h. Each testy must run as long as possible so that the testy can no longer catch

the "tuut" sound from the tape. The criterion for stopping the testicle is if

it is behind the "tuut" sound mark twice more than two steps behind the

end line.

3. Assessment

Take note of the last level and shuttle the testi can do or complete.

3.6 Factors Affecting Research

In conducting a study to avoid the potential for an error in its implementation.

Below are some of the factors and efforts to avoid these mistakes. Some of these

factors include:
50

3.6.1 The seriousness factor

In carrying out a test the level of seriousness will greatly affect the results of

existing tests. Therefore, in the implementation of the test, the researcher provides

clear directions in conducting the test with clear procedures. In addition to

explaining the test procedure, the researcher must also convey when conducting the

test so that the test participants do it seriously and seriously in order to get maximum

results. As well as researchers giving rewards or prizes for testy participants who in

carrying out the test get good results so that the testees take the test seriously or as

an encouragement.

3.6.2 Ability Factor

Every participant Testi must have different physical abilities, so the tester's

job is to give directions correctly. With the difference in the physical abilities

possessed by each of these testees will get different results. For example, the test

results from testes who like to do sports activities or athletes whose test results will

be different from testes who rarely do sports activities.

3.6.3 Test Factors

The tester's ability to collect this data also affects the results to be achieved.

Because the tester's understanding and knowledge in conducting this test is very

important and the tester's ability to explain, direct, and motivate testees in

conducting the test will also affect the results that will be obtained by testees.

3.7 Data analysis technique

Data processing is one of the most important steps because the results and

conclusions of all tests carried out will be answered after the data has been analyzed.
51

If all the data has been collected, the next step that must be taken is data processing

to obtain conclusions from the research that has been done. Tommy Soenyoto in

Guiding and Developing Sports Talent (2017: 12) explains analysis and assessment

techniques. After obtaining the data then it is neatly arranged and then processed

with existing software or talent scouting applications, namely sport search with the

following steps:

1. Collect data that has been obtained from all student test results.

2. Enter all test data from participants starting from name, age, gender, interests,

height, weight, sitting height, arm length, straight jump, throwing basketball,

throwing a tennis ball, running agility, sprinting 40 meters, and multistage

running.

3. After that the results will appear from the data that has been entered and

processed through the application and the talent data possessed by students will

be obtained from athletics, martial arts, individuals, racket / club, team / team,

water, and top ranking.

4. Furthermore, the data that has been obtained is recapitulated and correlated

with the interests of the students which can then be obtained according to the

students' interests.

The data analysis method used in this research is percentage descriptive, that

is, the suitability of the sports search test results with talents and interests, then the

variables are adjusted so that the problem formulation can be answered. The results
52

of the analysis are presented with a table, the descriptive criteria for presentation

are interpreted with qualitative sentences, then conclusions are drawn.

4.1.2.11 Interview Results

After the researcher conducted the research and got the results, the researcher

conducted an interview with the physical education teacher who taught the class

with the aim of confirming the talent scouting test that had been conducted by the

researcher. The following are some of the results from interviews in schools where

the research was conducted:

1. SMP N 2 Sulang

From the results of interviews conducted with physical education teachers

at SMP N 2 Sulang, that SMP N 2 Sulang often participated in several sports events.

The sports event most often attended by students of SMP 2 N Sulang is the POPDA

(Regional Student Sports Week) which is held regularly every year. However, none

of the students who took the test took part in the POPDA activity. Therefore, all test

takers have never achieved such an achievement in the POPDA.

68

The teacher also menexplain that some of the students who took the test

took extracurricular activities. However, they follow extracurricular activities less

regularly and inconsistently. The re-recruitment process for extracurricular

activities at SMP N 2 Sulang was carried out and was based solely on student

interest and not based on their talents. Student development in extracurricular

activities is less than optimal because it is not well organized. So that the

achievements obtained when participating in POPDA (Regional Sports Week) have

not been maximal.

2. SMP N 2 Kaliori

SMP N 2 Kaliori participated in sports events, one of which was POPDA

(Regional Student Sports Week). However, none of the students who took the test

had ever taken the POPDA because the students sampled here were still in grade 7

and were still said to be new to this school. However, there are also some who have

attended POPDA (Regional Student Sports Week) while in elementary school.

Of the many test participants who were sampled in the study, they participated

in extracurricular activities. However, they take part in these activities only based

on the hobbies they had when they were in elementary school, not on what talents

they have. From the students' interests, many are in accordance with the

extracurricular activities they take part in, but the talent aspect is still very minimal.

The development of other students in extracurricular activities is less prominent.

This may also be the effect of the lack of sports facilities that SMP N 2 Kaliori has

3. SMP N 6 Rembang
69

From the interviews conducted when participants took a series of tests, the

results obtained from the physical education teacher at SMP N 6 Rembang showed

that the school participated in several competitions in the field of sports. None of

the test takers or students who were the research samples had ever participated in

the sporting event, so the achievements of the students were not known.

There are several test takers or students who take part in extracurricular

activities such as volleyball and basketball. Those who take part in extracurricular

activities only refer to their interests without paying attention to the talent side.

Student development in extracurricular activities is also quite good but not optimal.

4. SMP N 1 Rembang

From the results of interviews obtained from physical education teachers at

SMP N 1 Rembang, the school has often participated in various sports events. From

most of the students sampled by the researcher, there was a student who had

participated in a sports event, namely POPDA (Regional Student Sports Week) but

had not yet won a champion or achievement at that event.

In SMP N 1 Rembang, extracurricular activities have actually been held but

they have not been carried out optimally. Students who take extracurricular

activities are only based on their interests and not based on the talents of these

students. The ability to master the techniques given during extracurricular activities

of students who take part in extracurricular activities is still not optimal.

5. SMP N 2 Rembang

From the results of interviews conducted with physical education teachers at

SMP N 2 Rembang, it is known that the school has participated in sports events
70

several times. However, no student who took the test or sample of this study had

ever achieved an achievement in a sports event because the test participants were

still in first grade. Most of the students who took the test or research sample had

taken extracurricular activities, but they had not been maximized because they had

just participated in extracurricular activities. Therefore, it is not known how the

development of extracurricular activities of the students who became the research

sample.

Discussion

Actually, every child has talents which, if developed optimally and guided

properly, can produce optimal performance. Therefore, there is a need for early age

coaching. Coaching aims to maximize the development of a child's talents. The role

of identifying early childhood talent is very important in the talent scouting and

coaching program of an athlete to achieve peak performance(Khouirunnisa et al.,

2012: 157).

Based on the talents that have been determined from the research above,

further coaching is still needed so that the talents that are owned can develop into

optimal achievements. Judging from the physical characteristics that can be seen

from junior high school aged children who are towards maturity in the development

of their movements, it is important to obtain information on children's talents so

that later the child can be directed into sports according to their talents. Some of the

physical characteristics that are assessed are: strength, flexibility, speed, endurance,

and power (Mkaouer, Hammoudi-Nassib, Amara, & Chaabène, 2018: 388). Of each

of these characteristics, some will stand out when taking the sports search test. From
71

one of the characteristics that we can see can be a reference for determining a child's

talent. If the child already has an interest in one of the sports, then the interest must

be considered so that it is in accordance with the talents they have.

There are actually many methods for conducting talent scouting tests, but

researchers use the sport search method as a form of general description or the initial

stage to identify a child's talent. This research actually still has shortcomings

because the sport search application itself comes from Australia, not from

Indonesia, where children in these two countries have different characteristics. The

analytical method used in this research is statistical calculation using sports

software calculations search which is one of several programs developed by The

Australian Sports Commission as part of AUSSIE SPORT (a comprehensive

country approach to sports development among youth). This method is also the

method adopted by KONI (Hadi, 2019: 122).

Identification using this talent scouting test is important because one's

achievements are largely determined by the abilities and talents possessed, so that

the resulting achievements in a field are a reflection of superior abilities and talents

(Candra, 2016: 3). HThe results of the survey show that athletes who have talent

and are supported by high motivation in training can achieve maximum

performance (Zhannisa & Sugiyanto, 2015: 118). This is also strengthened

byGunarsa (1992, in Utami, 2015: 57) view sports talent as a potential that is owned

by a person, to excel in certain activities or sports.

From the existing problems, it is necessary to do further research on this test.

For example, regarding the identification of talents in one sport in more detail. For
72

example, after the sports search test was carried out, it was found that 10 students

had talents in archery. Then the 10 students will carry out a further identification

test specifically for the archery sport. These students will take an archery test which

will be assessed through 3 aspects to determine special talents in archery, namely:

1) anthropometric aspects, 2) physiological aspects, and 3) basic skills

aspects(Prasetyo, Nasrulloh, & Komarudin, 2018: 204). From examining these 3

aspects, more accurate results will be obtained and the number of children who are

truly gifted in the sport will be obtained.

Actually, a person's abilities cannot always be seen at an early age. But for

people who are trained in their respective fields they can see and identify through

some signs that make sense as a predictive effort to develop this potential to become

successful and mature at a later stage.(Setyanto et al., 2017). In order to achieve

successful achievement in sports, it is necessary to allocate training exercises

according to the child's age level(Soetardji & Dwikusworo, 2013: 36).

Based on the results of the above analysis, it was found a match between the

talents and interests possessed by students. Of the total 149 students who took the

test, a total of 35 students or 23.5% of test takers had talents that matched their

interests and 114 students or 76.5% of test takers had talents that did not match their

interests. Students who have talents according to interests can be described as

follows: 16 students or 10.73% of aptitude test participants and their interests are

in accordance with volleyball, 3 students or 2.01% of aptitude test participants and

their interests are in accordance with the sport of football, 3 students or 2.01% of

participants in the aptitude test and their interests match the basketball sport, 2
73

students or 1.34% of the participants in the interest and aptitude tests were in

accordance with the futsal sport, 12 students or 8.05% of the participants in the

interest and aptitude test were in badminton.

The research above shows that junior high school students in Rembang

Regency have potential in various sports. Related to the results of the sports search

talent scouting test, several sports can be identified such as athletics (high jump,

shot put, long distance running, multi-jump, sprint, brisk walking), martial arts

(fencing, judo, karate, taekwondo, boxing), individual (trampoline, cycling,

gymnastics, archery, rock climbing), racket or stick (table tennis, badminton,

cricket, baseball, hockey, tennis), team or squad (handball, volleyball, futsal,

soccer, basketball ), water (diving, swimming, sky water, surfing). Based on these

results, it is possible for other sports to be developed because some sports are not

listed in the sports search application. In this case, the physical education

teacher,(Pratiwi, 2015: 1688).

From the results of interviews with physical education teachers, it can be

concluded that the development of sports in the school environment is still not well

organized. Judging from the extracurricular activities, the recruitment process is

still only based on students' interests or hobbies without paying attention to other

aspects. The implementation process is still not optimally organized. In several

sporting events such as POPDA, the school is often less prepared, so they cannot

get maximum results. Therefore, related parties are more active in coaching and

developing sports so that students do not have a lot of talents being wasted.
74

The explanation above illustrates that the increase in sports achievement can

be maximized if the guidance is carried out early and implemented systematically.

In this process, talent identification is a very important process. The purpose of

talent identification is the systematic selection of the best athletes who aim to

maximize their potential(Breitbach, Tug, & Simon, 2014: 2).

In the sport search method, there are still some shortcomings, namely in the

software there are still several sports that have not been included in this application

system, such as football takraw and pencak silat. The sports search software has a

system that adapts to the bodies of children in Australia which has several

differences with children in Indonesia, this results in several sports listed in the

application having differences. This is because Australian and Indonesian cultures

have different sports played and slightly different variations. This shows that there

is still a need for a further identification process from the talent identification

process using the sport search method because this method is only general in nature

and has not entered a more specific domain.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

5.1 Conclusion

By looking at the results of the data analysis that has been carried out

regarding the search for interests and talents of junior high school students in

Rembang Regency for the 2019/2020 school year, the researchers conclude that:

1. Junior high school students in Rembang Regency have an interest in several

sports, namely soccer as much as 22.81%, swimming as much as 14.09%,

baseball as much as 13.42%, badminton as much as 9.39%, volleyball as much

as 8.72%, ball basketball as much as 3.35%, running as much as 2.68%, cycling

as much as 1.34%, and taekwondo as much as 0.67%.

2. Junior high school students in Rembang Regency have talents in several sports,

namely volleyball, soccer, basketball, futsal and badminton. This can make it

easier for schools to direct students to sports according to their talents.

3. The dominant sports according to the talents of junior high school students in

Rembang Regency are volleyball 16 students or 10.73% of participants,

badminton 12 students or 8.05% of participants, soccer 3 students or 2.01% of

participants, sports basketball 3 students or 2.01% participants, futsal 2 or

1.34% participants.

75
76

4. In this study, a match was found between the interests of the students and the

talents identified through the talent search process using the sport search

method. With the percentage of suitability as many as 35 students or 23.48%

and the inappropriate percentage was 114 students or 76.51% so that the

suitable ones were lower than those who were not.

5.2 Suggestion

Based on the research that has been done, the researchers provide suggestions:

1. For the Rembang Regency Education Office, so that it can add to sports talent

search methods and carry out these activities regularly and periodically along

with direct supervision to oversee the athlete nursery process so that the results

obtained are more optimal.

2. For the school concerned to pay more attention to the identification process of

students so that it is carried out more systematically and periodically, not only

based on fleeting observations. The school is also encouraged to direct students

to take part in extracurricular activities according to their talents and carry out

extracurricular activities more systematically in order to get optimal results.

3. For students who have interests and talents that do not match the sports search

talent scouting test and feel that their current sport does not produce optimal

results, students can try to pursue the sports results from the sports search talent

scouting test. This can be done without directly leaving the sport that is

currently being practiced. If the results of this aptitude scouting test are more

appropriate, students can focus on developing and practicing sports that match

the test results.

77

4. For students who have interests that match the talents identified in talent search,

it is hoped that they will increase their training so that the achievement can be

more optimal.

5. For parents, it is hoped that they can support their children maximally With

direct support from parents, the child's development process will run well.

Apart from supporting extracurricular activities at school, parents can also

register or join sports clubs outside of school according to their talents.

6. For parties such as physical education teachers, sports club coaches, related

institutions or agencies, it is hoped that they will be more active in improving

the coaching and development of sports talents especially in Rembang district,

seeing that the achievements achieved by athletes in Rembang district are not

satisfactory. Thus, the existing potential is not lost and can be maximally

developed. With a good coaching process, the talents possessed by children

will develop properly and be able to achieve optimal potential and maximum

achievements.
