Week 8

Determine areas of concern for safety measures

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

1. Identify work tasks in line with farm operations.
2. Determine place and time for safety measures in line with farm operations.
3. Prepare appropriate tools, materials, and outfits in line with job requirements.
4. Observe safety and health protocol in the farm.

Let us determine how much you already know about the use of farm
tools. Take this test.

What is the difference between safety and protection? What will you do to protect yourself in order
to be safe?
Directions: Answer the following to determine how you know about protecting
yourself. Write the letter of your correct answers in the activity notebook.

5. Which of the following protects your face from any hazard?
A. Face shield
B. Gloves
C. Goggles
D. Masks

What can you understand about these terms/words/phrases?

 Chemical Substance
 Personal Protective Equipment

Chemical Substance - is a form of matter that has constant

chemical composition and characteristic properties. They can be in
the form of solid, liquid or gas.
.
Personal protective) equipment (PPE) refers to protective clothing,
helmets, goggles, or other garment or equipment designed to protect
the wearer's body from injury by blunt impacts, electrical hazards,
heat, chemicals, and infection, for job-related occupational safety
and health purposes.

AREAS OF CONCERN FOR FARM SAFETY

Every farm is different, but hazards common to most farms include:

1. Animals – injuries inflicted by animals can include bites, kicks, crushing, ramming,
trampling, and transmission of certain infectious diseases such as giardia,
salmonella, ringworm and leptospirosis.
2. Chemicals – pesticides and herbicides can cause injuries such as burns, respiratory
illness or poisoning.
3. Confined spaces – such as silos, water tanks, milk vats and manure pits may
contain unsafe atmospheres, which can cause poisoning or suffocation.
4. Electricity – dangers include faulty switches, cords, machinery or overhead power
2
lines.
5. Heights – falls from ladders, rooftops, silos and windmills are a major cause of injury.
6. Machinery – hazards include tractors without roll-over protection structures (ROPS),
power take-off (PTO) shafts, chainsaws, augers, motorbikes and machinery with
unguarded moving parts.
7. Noise pollution – noise from livestock, machinery and guns can affect your hearing.
8. Vehicles – crashes or falls from motorbikes, two-wheel and quad bikes, tractors.
9. Water – drowning can occur in as little as five centimeters of water. Dams, lakes,
ponds, rivers, channels, tanks, drums and creeks are all hazards. Young children are
particularly at risk.
10. Weather – hazards include sunburn, heat stroke, dehydration and hypothermia.

Different Work Tasks in line with Farm Operations/Animal Productions

 Land/area preparation
 Procurement/purchase/preparation of materials needed
 Different Cultural Practices/Requirements such as; disinfecting, spraying, building poultry and
livestock housing, harvesting, marketing, storing,

Other specific work task are;

 Feeding  Maintenance of buildings/housing
 Watering  De-beaking
 Herbing  Weighing
 Grazing  Catching
 Castrating  Loading/transport of animals
 Branding  Cleaning animal houses
 milking  helping with births/caring for sick
and new born animals
Health and Safety Hazards on Farms

Farm workers—including farm families and migrant workers—are exposed to hazards such
as the following:

 Chemicals/ Pesticides  Highway traffic  Noise  Toxic gases

 Livestock handling  Electricity  Dust  Grain bins
 Slips/Trips/Falls  Lifting  Ponds  Manure pits
 Machinery/ Equipment  Cold  Silos  Tractors
 Sun/Heat  Hand tools  Wells  Mud

High Risk Factors on Farms

The following factors may increase risk of injury or illness for farm workers:
 Age – Injury rates are highest among children age 15 and under and adults
over 65.
 Equipment and Machinery – Most farm accidents and fatalities involve
machinery. Proper machine guarding and doing equipment maintenance
according to manufacturers‘ recommendations can help prevent accidents.
 Protective Equipment – Using protective equipment, such as seat belts on
tractors, and personal protective equipment (such as safety gloves, coveralls,
boots, hats, aprons, goggles, and face shields) could significantly reduce
farming injuries.
 Medical Care – Hospitals and emergency medical care are typically not
readily accessible in rural areas near farms.
In area preparation and cleaning stalls and pens (Mucking Out) use rake, trash bins, scythes, bolos,
gloves, working clothes, wheel barrows, dust pans, hose, midrib brooms, etc. Observe and follow safety
measures in the use of these tools and materials and wear the prescribe outfit.

3
When spraying/disinfecting use spray shoes, sprayers, buckets, disinfectants/chemical protection
materials and outfits like masks, gloves, stirring rod, protective clothing, hats, and others.
Wash hands after using any disinfectant, including surface wipes. Keep lids tightly closed when not
in use. Keep chemicals out of the reach of children and pets. Thrown away disposable items like mask and
gloves.
In animal housing construction, use safety glasses, gloves, long trousers, steel-toed shoes or boots,
hard hat, safety helmets, in order to be safe and protected.
Where harvesting and marketing/selling your products, use any protective materials which you know
will protect you, like gloves, goggles and shield. When doing this task, be extra careful in order not to be
hurt and injured.
Proper waste management includes cleaning of all materials needed in animal production and the
proper disposal of waste to do this animal raiser used any cleaning tools and materials like rakes, midrib
brooms, properly labeled trash bins, pits, wheel barrows, any digging material like shovels, etc. in
performing this tools, use coveralls, over-alls, gloves, mask, goggles, boots, safety helmets, respirators with
filters or powered respirators.
In short, always use these appropriate tools and materials and outfits, the so called PPE, for safety
all time.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

The law requires that personal protective equipment be provided for use at work and must meet an
appropriate standard and must be CE marked. The PPE’s that are commonly used in farm-related are:

Personal Protective
Function Picture
Equipment (PPE)

Ear Plugs Protect ones hearing when operating

noisy equipment or when working in a
cloistered environment.

Hard Hat/ Protect the head when performing

Safety Helmet construction work and the users head
against impact from objects falling from
above

Safety Glasses / Prevent the dust debris, wood shaving,

Goggles etc. from getting into the eyes

Gloves Protect and comfort the hands against

cold and heat, damage by friction,
abrasion or chemicals, etc.

Rubber boots Protect the feet when on wet or muddy

grounds, from heavy showers and
puddles

4
Masks Protect the wearer from inhaling the
dust, fumes, gasses and mist of
chemicals when spraying, disinfecting
and other agricultural related work

Coveralls Protect the wearer (farmer) against

cold , and sharp small objects like barb
wires, etc.

Steel-toed Protects the feet from falling objects or

boot/work boot compression, which has a protective
reinforcement in the tor
Gas mask Is a breathing device to protect the
wearer against harmful substances in
the air

Rain coat/ Protects the wearer from rain

wet weather
clothing

 Personal protective equipment (PPE)

Respiratory protective equipment (RPE)

Suitable RPE can be used to provide protection against two broad types of substance:
 dusts

5
 fibers
 mists
 fumes
 micro-organisms (bioaerosols)
 gases and vapors
Respirators come in various forms including disposable half-mask respirators, full-face
mask respirators with filters, or powered respirators.

Let us see how well you understand the lesson by accomplishing

these activities.
