1. Animals – injuries inflicted by animals can include bites, kicks, crushing, ramming,
trampling, and transmission of certain infectious diseases such as giardia,
salmonella, ringworm and leptospirosis.
2. Chemicals – pesticides and herbicides can cause injuries such as burns, respiratory
illness or poisoning.
3. Confined spaces – such as silos, water tanks, milk vats and manure pits may
contain unsafe atmospheres, which can cause poisoning or suffocation.
4. Electricity – dangers include faulty switches, cords, machinery or overhead power

lines.
5. Heights – falls from ladders, rooftops, silos and windmills are a major cause of injury.
6. Machinery – hazards include tractors without roll-over protection structures (ROPS),
power take-off (PTO) shafts, chainsaws, augers, motorbikes and machinery with
unguarded moving parts.
7. Noise pollution – noise from livestock, machinery and guns can affect your hearing.
8. Vehicles – crashes or falls from motorbikes, two-wheel and quad bikes, tractors.
9. Water – drowning can occur in as little as five centimeters of water. Dams, lakes,
ponds, rivers, channels, tanks, drums and creeks are all hazards. Young children are
particularly at risk.
10. Weather – hazards include sunburn, heat stroke, dehydration and hypothermia.
Farm workers—including farm families and migrant workers—are exposed to hazards such
as the following:
The following factors may increase risk of injury or illness for farm workers:
Age – Injury rates are highest among children age 15 and under and adults
over 65.
Equipment and Machinery – Most farm accidents and fatalities involve
machinery. Proper machine guarding and doing equipment maintenance
according to manufacturers‘ recommendations can help prevent accidents.
Protective Equipment – Using protective equipment, such as seat belts on
tractors, and personal protective equipment (such as safety gloves, coveralls,
boots, hats, aprons, goggles, and face shields) could significantly reduce
farming injuries.
Medical Care – Hospitals and emergency medical care are typically not
readily accessible in rural areas near farms.
In area preparation and cleaning stalls and pens (Mucking Out) use rake, trash bins, scythes, bolos,
gloves, working clothes, wheel barrows, dust pans, hose, midrib brooms, etc. Observe and follow safety
measures in the use of these tools and materials and wear the prescribe outfit.

When spraying/disinfecting use spray shoes, sprayers, buckets, disinfectants/chemical protection
materials and outfits like masks, gloves, stirring rod, protective clothing, hats, and others.
Wash hands after using any disinfectant, including surface wipes. Keep lids tightly closed when not
in use. Keep chemicals out of the reach of children and pets. Thrown away disposable items like mask and
gloves.
In animal housing construction, use safety glasses, gloves, long trousers, steel-toed shoes or boots,
hard hat, safety helmets, in order to be safe and protected.
Where harvesting and marketing/selling your products, use any protective materials which you know
will protect you, like gloves, goggles and shield. When doing this task, be extra careful in order not to be
hurt and injured.
Proper waste management includes cleaning of all materials needed in animal production and the
proper disposal of waste to do this animal raiser used any cleaning tools and materials like rakes, midrib
brooms, properly labeled trash bins, pits, wheel barrows, any digging material like shovels, etc. in
performing this tools, use coveralls, over-alls, gloves, mask, goggles, boots, safety helmets, respirators with
filters or powered respirators.
In short, always use these appropriate tools and materials and outfits, the so called PPE, for safety
all time.
The law requires that personal protective equipment be provided for use at work and must meet an
appropriate standard and must be CE marked. The PPE’s that are commonly used in farm-related are:
