Lesson objective: After this lesson, students will be able to make a report about technical problems.
Activity 1A: Guessing
1.1. Vocabulary review
 Work in groups.

 Choose a picture in turn.

 Guess the problem in each picture.

 There are 3 hints for you (1st hint: 3 points, 2nd

hint: 2 points, 3rd hint: 1 point)

 The group with the highest points is the winner.

1.2. Peer conversation

 Work in pairs.
 Ask and answer about problems in the pictures.

Sample:

A: What’s wrong with the knife?

B: It is chipped because it is used to cut hard thing.

Activity 2A: What’s missing?

 Listen and fill in the blanks with NO MORE THAN TWO

WORDS. The first one has been done for you.
 Turn to the resource files (unit 6- activity 2A) and
practice the conversation.

Lesson objectives: After this lesson, students will be able to make a report about technical problems
and solutions.
Activity 1B: What’s the solution?
- Work in pairs.
- Match problems (1-8) with suitable solutions (a-e). There may be more than one option for each
problem.
Solutions

a. Purchase new one b. Repair it c. Take new one from the warehouse

d. Change it e. Replace it

Problems
1. Dented car door 2. Broken screwdriver

3. Bent box wrench 4. Scratched car

5. Cracked glass surface of workbench 6. Missing tool

7. Wrong type screwdriver 8. Leaking pump

Follow up activity:
- Work in 2 groups: A and B.
- Stand in 2 lines face to face.
- Line 1: Members of group A work individually on reporting the problems above in turn.
- Line 2: Members of group B work individually on suggesting the solution for those problems in turn.
Some useful language for giving solutions
- I think you should + V (infinitive)
- Why don’t you + V (infinitive)
- How about + V-ing
- What about + V-ing
- Let’s + V (infinitive)
Sample:
Student in line 1: The glass workbench is cracked.

………………
Activity 2B: Can you make a report?
- Work individually.
- Read the following report and fill in the blanks with NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS.

English for Mechanical Engineering Student’s book 3

After the routine inspection, I have found out some issues with the tools and equipment in our
workshop. There were no plugs in the toolbox. Some ballpeen hammers were missing. We need to
purchase more plugs and hammers for our coming project. Since they have been frequently used,
some scissors wore out. We really need to replace them with new ones in the warehouse. In
addition, there was a crack on the workbench surface. The top of the workbench should be
replaced. Yesterday we received the screwdrivers but they were of the wrong type. I have already
called and asked the supplier to exchange them. The knife became rusty. It was probably because
of its exposure to the rain for two weeks. I suppose we need to order a new one from our supplier.

items. Ask him/her about the problems and give solutions.
Activity 3 B: Free talk
- Imagine that you’re an apprentice in the workshop.
