Module 6 Assignment:
Career Plan Template
Section 1: Creating your BHAG
Following the information in the “Good to Great Connections” PowerPoint presentation and all
of the additional information provided under the Module 4 content area, and taking your Personal
Mission Statement development efforts into consideration, carefully develop your own personal
long term BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***). The timeframe for
your BHAG is 10-25 years out, however it will depend upon your age. For example, a 55 year
old person might be closer to the 10 year BHAG, whereas a 30 year old or younger person
should be considering a BHAG 25 years out. This BHAG may be related to your overall
life/lifestyle aspirations, or it could be related to some organizational, protean, or
entrepreneurial vision you have for the future. Dig deep and and go beyond the job. That is up to
you. What it needs to be is BIG! HUGE! REALLY HAIRY! STRETCH YOURSELF! LOOK
BEYOND GRADUATE DEGREE! LOOK BEYOND A JOB! HOW WILL YOU MAKE A
DIFFERENCE IN THIS WORLD???? I RECOMMEND WE MEET TO DISCUSS IT TO
ENSURE ITS HUGENESS.
1) What is your BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***)?
Inspire the world to be more kind, patient, understanding, ethical and sustainable through
demonstrated leadership. To put the everyperson ahead of the individual to ensure
everyone has a chance at life regardless of where they began.
The quote “Be the change you wish to see in the world” has always stuck in my mind. I
often find myself trying to understand why people make the choices they do and
understanding where they are coming from – from a place of cuiriousity rather than
judgement. I think it is important that we show leadership can be done in different ways
than it has in the past. We have so many examples of unethical leadership choices and
decisions and I think it is time for a change. Often women try to make themselves more
manlike in their presentation and mentality and in doing so lose a lot of their unique
skills. There is no correct way to be a woman, I myself am quite androgenous and at
times masculine in my presentation but I cherish a lot of the more feminine qualities as
well. These are things such as kindness, patience, and understanding. Combining these
1
things with an honest ambition and a will to do right by everyone involved and this leads
to my overall BHAG.
3) How does your BHAG align with your vision statement from Module 4?
4) How does your BHAG align with your mission statement from Module 4?
My Mission
• I will focus on building automation where systems are best suited for the work, and
simplify complex processes for human
interaction. I will create a healthy, productive environment for everyone in my
community, including myself.
• I will bring my family along as I learn lessons in communication, technology and
vulnerability.
• I will spend time on the improvements I can make and not be discouraged by the
progress that has yet to be made.
• I will be kind to others whenever possible as kindness is contagious and it spreads. I
will prioritize my physical and emotional needs
for long term health.
2
• I will continue to learn from others, regardless of differences, as it is especially
important to listen to those you do not agree with.
• I will focus on behaving like I am “rich rich” and not “broke and bougee” keeping my
goals in mind. (Restate your Mission Statement and Insert Answer Here)
My focus on the contagiousness of kindness is directly in line with the BHAG of making
the world more kind, patient, understanding and ethical. A lot of what I am talking about
is specifically in automating to make life easier for others, which goes in line with the 2nd
half of my BHAG – to ensure everyone has a chance at life regardless of where they
begin – this is what the emphasis of my goals on continual improvement are.
Recognizing that I cannot be discouraged by the progress that is yet to be made will be
critical.
5) List your top five (5) obstacles in order from number 5 being least difficult and
number 1 being most difficult you need to overcome in order to obtain your BHAG
and explain the relevance of each one.
1) Having the patience to slow down to teach others how, instead of expecting
people to know what I already know.
i. As much as I want to teach patience and understanding actually having the
patience to wait for others to come to an idea can be difficult.
ii. I often remind myself that we are all at a different place in our life
journey. People do not know what they do not know.
2) Encouraging others to embrace their vulnerability when the risk of being kind and
patient can mean being temporarily harmed.
i. Many cultures teach that kindness is weakness and people from various
backgrounds have been directly harmed by not being cautious and aware.
In many ways it is a privilege to be trusting.
ii. There is not only 1 way to be kind and identifying what is unkind can be
difficult in a cultural context.
3) Getting past the initial thought people have of positivity and kindess being “woo
woo” and allowing them to see the benefit it has on a sense of self.
i. You can be strong and kind simultaneously. To demonstrate kindness
toward another can open up the possibility for that individual to open up to
others as well.
ii. Without having demonstrations of what it feels like to be surrounded with
kindness and not worrying about the potential pushback from a perceived
weakness it can be difficult to make yourself available to the idea.
4) Balancing personal happiness and the happiness of the whole community can be
difficult.
3
i. There is a delicate balance between over committing yourself to the
progress of others and being selfish and not focusing on the needs of
others.
5) Maintaining my own kindness, positivity, and strength in a world that is often
focused on the negative.
i. If I am unable to demonstrate what it is like to be kind, patient,
understanding and empathetic it will be difficult for others to be able to
emulate.
ii. Describing how to maintain positivity in the darkness can often seem
naïve, or ignorant.
iii. It is important to be able to explain that you look at the darkness in your
interpretation of the world, and acknowledge it for what it is, and how it
impacts us.
1) Analyze the type of career you want to have, in terms of an organizational career or
a protean career, make sure it is clear you understand the concepts as outlined in
the textbook. Why?
I want to have a protean career. I am constantly making my job role into what I want it to
be, and what I enjoy based on what is allowed. Though I have a loyalty to my company,
it is because they support the freedom for me to develop skills in areas I am interested in
and pivot into the roles in the future. I am not interested in focusing on a single company
and what they have available and the directions they want me to move into to
accommodate.
2) Analyze your career with an explanation as one that moves you up the organization
or one you develop seeking alternative career paths. If you see yourself taking an
alternative career path, which one(s) sound the most likely? Why?
4
experience and improving the user experience in the processes we have developed. I find
that a lot of people who have an understanding of user experience are not technically
savy and cannot explain the technical requirements to explain them to a developer. A lot
of people who code and develop solutions are not focused on the user experience as they
do not have a design orientation. I used to create my own Zines (indepenedently
published and distributed magazines) and became absolutely fascinated with the idea of
“ergonomic psychology” when one of my first professors who was in his eighties
explained that it was the study of how people interact with objects. I began to look at
everything in life through that lense even though I changed my major long ago from
psychology. I pivot into different career paths and areas that allow me opportunities to
help others have a seamless and positive working environment.
The moment I no longer see a need for me to work on making a process more smooth and
taking the friction from it I become bored and move on. This leads to me learning a
number of different areas in order to be able to assist and build. I don’t think there will be
positions up the organization to be moved unless it is in the case where they want a CEO
who is focused on making a positive, kind, clear vision for both the customer and the
employee. The moves will often be lateral and not up in the company due to the nature of
the work and can potentially move on to other companies who could utilize my skills. I
believe it all builds upon itself to give you a unique set of tools to build with.
3) Discuss and explain if you see yourself working an alternative or flexible work
schedule/arrangement? If so, which ones and why?
I happen to work for the company who pioneered flexible work arrangements. It is very
important to me that a company trust that I will do the work I am hired to do. What this
means is often I put in more than the “required” time or what would be expected, and
then often I need to be able to leave in the middle of the day to watch a performance my
son puts on at his school. While I balance these needs with my husband, it is still
important to me that my company offer me the flexibility to be a good mother and show
up when my kid needs me.
4) Research and post current, or past, job postings from your local area, across the
country, or from around the world which illustrate how you might reach your
BHAG. Be sure to provide the Job Title, a small description and why it supports
your BHAG when you provide the URL. Websites such as CareerBuilder, Monster,
or Indeed might be a good place to begin. Also, career-specific websites such as
SHRM.org or AICPA.org often have job postings. Provide 2 listings for each of the
following time periods:

Section 3: Long-Term Strategy
Develop a strategy for moving toward your ideal future work/life situation and the realization of
your BHAG(s). Consider the timeframe for your BHAG(s). Provide a vivid description of life
“the way it will be” once your BHAG is realized.
1) Critically think about and then list out (not a narrative format) the interim steps or
milestones you have laid out for yourself that will aid you in reaching your BHAG
(you should have at least 10 to earn a rating of excellent and be referenced by time)
2) In addition to career-related roles, consider your other life roles in relation to your
career goals. Revisit your responses to the Identities Exercise that you completed in
Module 1 of the course. Based on your long-term strategy what are the 3 most
precious things you are willing to sacrifice, besides time, to achieve your BHAG?
Why?
Time with my family will inevitably be limited while we work through what it means to
have work life balance as a parent and a working executive. I found myself going down
the path of targeting the gaming community as that which I would most like to improve.
This is a very male dominated industry with numerous examples of sexist behavior.
There will be a level of work ethic required in order to prove dedication to the efforts of
the company and team.
11
My second sacrifice is not being able to make the time commitemnets to do things like
coach childrens sports due to the travel potential of the roles I will be pursuing. In the
past I was able to coach, but moving forward I don’t know that will be as feasible, as my
responsibilities increase. My son is out of the age where I can coach him which means
the next children will be turning the coachable age as my career responsibilities will be
increasing.
My third sacrifice is being able to spend time in nature. I know that a lot of the things that
will be required of me will not be able to be done while I am out in nature and will
require me to have access to technology on a regular basis. My time in nature is
something I am willing to largely sacrifice in order to achieve my BHAG. I will still find
moments to ground myself for my mental health and wellbeing but I recognize that it will
not be able to be the long meandering walks I have taken in the past in my career.
12
Section 4: The one to two year plan
Using a SMART goals-based approach, as well as project planning and management skill best
practices, create a detailed project plan for at least two specific goals. At least one must be
related to your long-term BHAG. The other may be related to some other aspect of your career
development or career-life integration. Both of these goals need to be things that you are
passionate about accomplishing.
Your selected goals and SMART plan (see SMART goal information provided in the module)
should be structured based on a one to two-year timeline. It should include specific milestones,
action items, sub-tasks as well as task-related interdependencies as applicable. With respect to
each goal, critically think about what specifically are the things you will do in the next one to
two years to achieve these goals.
Develop a clear and detailed SMART plan, with facilitating goals and steps/actions required
to accomplish your selected goals. It should be evident, by looking at the format and structure
of your plan, that you have developed some significant skills respect to project management.
Include Gantt charts (T) or other visual project representations as you see fit, and be sure to
address your approach to tracking/measuring your progress (M).
1) What is your #1 Goal? (at least one of the following must be related to your BHAG)
I will update my resume and LinkedIn profile to include my most recent work
history and skills. This includes my school focus as well as the extra skills I have
been working on in trainings and conferences. I will also include my Boise Pride
Leadership credentials. Need professional looking headshot.
I will know this is complete when I have included my education and focuses and
when I am comfortable applying and sending the information to a prospective
employer.
This is easy to do, and required as part of working in the tech industry. I learned
this term how critical networking is and recognize the need to digitally network as
well as network in person.
This needs to be completed by the beginning of May to allow for job applications
once complete. It should take 1 month total so should be begun by the beginning
of May. This is important as I want to work in technology and gaming and I need
to have a personal brand developed and viewable projective managers. The timing
of May aligns with college graduation and looking for a new position within my
company.
13
2) What is your #2 Goal? (at least one of these must be related to your BHAG)
(Insert your #2 Goal above and provide short answers below describing your goal in
terms of the SMART model. Finally, provide a Gantt chart using the tools provided).
I will begin applying for work at my company specifically targeting jobs in the
gaming space. We have marketing positions as well as operations positions
available in the gaming and gaming peripheral space.
I will begin to apply for at least 2 jobs per month that qualify for my requirements
of being available in Idaho and being in the gaming space until I receive a job
offer that I want to persue within 1 year.
14
This aligns with my long term goal of working in the gaming industry in order to
help improve the culture for women in gaming.
