What Exactly Is Mental Distress?

Mental distress is often persistent, does not readily cure, and
gets triggered in different situations. Before we begin dealing
with it, we first need to understand it and most of us are even
not aware of what they are exactly going through. There are
times when we cannot control our emotions, our calmness, and
composure. We avoid communicating with people, lock up our-
selves at home, burst out in tears to cope up with the trauma
that we are going through. As humans, when we suffer, we
deny it at first. We neglect it calling ourselves “just fine” or
“okay” to everyone believe that we are doing good. We often
neglect it until it takes a toll on our physical health, lifestyle,
and relationships with other people. But we are neither alone nor the only, in this battle to fight with mental problems
and now, the time has come to discuss such an important issue openly.

How Common Is Mental Distress?

According to the official figures, at least one in every five individuals is affected. This is such an alarming issue yet it is
never discussed fearing what the society may think. But no more! They are brave survivors, like you & I, out there who are
still fighting the world without any support or help. Now the world must listen to our voice and know what are we going
through. People often label mentally distressed people as “mentally sick” but you know what? These people are not sick,
they are rather the “soldiers“ who survived & still fighting this disease without any support from anyone. They are truly
brave heroes and they deserve our respect the most. We should embrace anxiety and depression, just as we embrace our
fears. Although there are many different types of distress, the most common type is Anxiety, which further is divided into
many categories. Let’s have a brief look at it.
Generalized anxiety disorder: This disorder concerns excessive apprehension about several issues almost daily for at least
half a year.

Social anxiety disorder: This is felt by people who suddenly find peace in social distancing and home isolation. They have
social anxiety wherever there is a gathering of people or an audience in front of them, etc.

Phobias: These are recurring fear towards a particular animal, insect, object, or situation causes substantial anxiety.
Panic disorder: Panic attacks are unforeseen, severe occurrences of thumping heartbeat accompanied by fear, breathlessness,
and terror.

Physical wellbeing and nental wellbieng goes hand in hand

When our mental health deteriorates, our behaviour shows the manifestations. Mental health experts say that people
enduring such issues turn down plans and invitations with family, friends, colleagues, etc.

For instance, the unfriendly working environment at workplace causes mental distress.
People call sick and avoid workplace gatherings by telling lies. It indicates that the
employee is under distress.

People also become denial about their mental agony. They find it embarrassing to tell others about their problems. They
feel like they are a laughing stock and others will ridicule them. This pressure multiplies inside the person's mind until it
becomes unbearable.

We urge people to not neglect mental stress and give it equal importance as physical wellbeing.

Stigma Surrounding Mental Health

We all have our share of unhappy days where depression is at its peak. But, the stigma around mental health takes the
worst hit on us. Sometimes the disgrace that people show to us during our disturbed state of being, only makes our
situation worse. Mental health stigma can prevent a person from seeking professional help and medication for the cure.
Stigmatization can result in many negative thoughts and things.
Below we are mentioning some of the most common ones:
1. Lower self-esteem
2. Reduced willpower to live and do work. Negative stereot-
yping causes a person to
3. Possess fear
4. Less excitement
5. Become unsocial and violent.
We understand how individuals suffer from social anxiety
and prefer not to step out of the house. But inside the hou-
se, their family members address them as lazy which
makes them feel deplorable.

Professional Help for Sress Management

When we take a lot of stress for a prolonged period, we succumb to the ill-effects of depression and anxiety. Stress
can infiltrate and surge in our lives for several reasons. If there is anyone who can help you from getting stressed is
you. You can trust yourself to combat stress and bring about the best in you, while a professional guides you through.

Stress management is a series of strategies that professional health experts and lifestyle wellness initiators create
for people to combat stress. Once we start following these techniques, we regain our inner peace. The proven and
scientific techniques of stress management help us to calm down and bring back happiness and tranquillity.

Our body starts to respond in a very positive way when we follow these strategies in our daily life.

Counsellors opine that people can manage stress by channelling their body and mind to a different activity. Activiti-
es like yoga, meditation, exercise, uplift the mind of stress individuals. They help the mind to feel relaxed and fresh.
So we suggest people engage in an hour of exercise with meditation to have a relaxing start to the day.

Reports show that stress hormones are less when we have a care-giver around us. A warm cuddle from the person
you love, sharing fears and thoughts, endless conversations, help to ease the burden of anxiety. Those with a caring
partner must engage in a loving intimate relationship during these trying times. A good sexual relationship helps our
body to release endorphins and dopamine. These are feel-good hormones that lower levels of anxiety drastically.

Visiting A Psychiatrist/Professional
Stress management sessions with psychiatrists in a routine fashion is helpful for those individuals who are lonely. A talk,
with an expert, is excellent therapy. Not only will doctors listen to your problems but also we will guide you with steps to
overcome it. They help you engage in activities that boost your spirit. You make friends with people who are also on the
same boat. Gradually you regain your cognitive thinking and rationalise things happening.

When it comes to coping up with depression and anxiety, it is of paramount importance that we get rid of negative thoughts.
Owing to our past experiences, we cannot help but think about the worst. But we should be resolute, and not let our past m-
eddle with our present. Happy thoughts, engagements, fun activities will help us get rid of the mental agony.

The advice of mental health experts plays a pivotal role in our outlook. After dealing with mental breakdowns, we need to
understand that we shouldn't jump into conclusions. Mental exercises and proper nutrition help us to feel good, and feel
positive, about our state-of-being. This, in turn, makes us feel confident. Stay happy and mentally healthy stops us from
bickering with someone. Sessions with professionals help us to become mindful, proactive, and cope up with work-related
stress.

Conclusion
I, the writer of this book, have been suffering mental distress throughout my childhood without anyone even realizing any-
thing. I have felt this world crashing down, I have felt that I almost lose everything but I didn’t give up. I have fought my
fears and come out victorious!

Now, with my pen, I wish to help others who are facing the same issue I had in my past. I want them to feel that they are
not alone. Back then, I had no one with whom I could discuss my problems but now, I have ways to express what I feel. I
want you to do the same. Tell the world what are you feeling right now. Let them know that you are a fighter, not a coward
who would hide. Let everyone know how you have fought your fears.

Always remember, “you have a fighter within yourself and it is waiting for the moment you unleash it. Society has developed
a toxic unnatural way of dealing with fighters and survivors like us but we must break that to build a better environme-
nt around us. The time has come when we fight this battle and redefine the word ‘brave’ by coming out victorious.”

Start exploring the fighter within yourself !
