Lesson Objective

After reading Letters From Bear, Little Fox, The Grizzly Mother, The Moose of Ewenki, and Under the

Great Plum Tree, students will be asked to create their own Collaborative Book. In this culminating

assignment, students will be placed in pairs (one group of three if there are an odd number of students).

Students will be asked to create a storybook that focuses on an animal of their choosing as the main

protagonist. The book must be at least five pages in length and must contain both a written story and

illustrations. Students may illustrate the book by any means they wish (drawing, images cut from

magazines, images pulled from web, etc.), however, the illustrations must pertain to their written story.

Procedures

1. Students will have read all the assigned texts for the unit at this point.

2. The Collaborative Book assignment will be explained to the class by the teacher, and a teacher

example will be shown.

3. Students will be placed in pairs (one group of three if there are an odd number of students).

4. Students will be given time to brainstorm their story.

5. Students will be given time to collect resources for their illustrations (art materials will be

provided by the teacher).

6. Students will create their Collaborative Book.

7. Students will share their book with the class at the end of the period.
