Lesson Objective

After reading Letters From Bear, students will choose a specific scene from the text where Bear does not

recognize his surroundings. A class discussion will be held Students will then write and Unsent Letter to

landmark or a description of one of the other characters in the scene and a description of what is

occurring in the scene. The letter must be at least one full page (may not exceed two pages). Students

will then be asked to share their letter with the class.

Procedure

1. Students will read Letters From Bear.

2. An open class discussion will be held discussing some of the scenes from the text and why Bear

was so confused when he encountered the places or individuals from the scene.

3. Students will select a scene from the text that they wish to write about.

4. Students will individually write a 1-to-2-page letter to Bear explaining the geographic landmark

or character in the scene and what is occurring in the scene.

5. Students will then share their letters individually to the class.

6. Students must explain why they chose the scene, what they chose to explain to Bear, and what

is occurring in the scene.

7. Letters will be collected for assessment.
