Definitions for Various Types of Duty

The clutch is used only for disconnecting the power from the load. When engaging, so little work is done that the
clutch shows no temperature increase at the pressure plate outer surface. Use torque limit and ignore horsepower.

CUT-OFF DUTY
Example:
A clutch behind a hydraulic torque converter that is engaged only when the clutch output parts are
stationary and the engine is at low idle.

The clutch is used primarily for disconnect, but does more work during engagement than in cut-off duty. The clutch
will engage within 2 seconds, never heat the pressure plate above a hand holding temperature and start the load
less than 6 times per hour.
LIGHT DUTY
Example:
Disconnect clutch between engine and hydraulic torque converter with engine above low idle when
engaging the clutch, as in power shovel master clutch, generator and similar drives.

The clutch is used to start loads with frequencies up to 30 per hour Even more important is that the clutch can start
the heaviest load within 3 seconds and that the product of seconds of clutch slip per engagement times the number
of engagements per hour be under 90. A normal duty application may raise the outer clutch surface temperature to
under 100° F (37° C) above the ambient temperature.
NORMAL DUTY
Example:
Fluid coupling to engine disconnect, in a power train behind a hydrodynamic fluid drive, engine PTO
starting average loads and clutches whose starting load is only 66% of running load.

The clutch is used to start loads requiring not over 4 seconds to start the heaviest load. Also, the product of seconds
of clutch slip per engagement times the number of engagements per hour is not to exceed 180. Clutch outer surface
temperature rise does not reach 150° F (66° C) above ambient temperature.
HEAVY DUTY
Example:
Engine PTO starting heavy loads such as rock crushers, gin mills and other inertia machinery; in
power train without fluid drive when starting load approaches or exceeds the running load.
