Competency Standard 1:

To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment

Functional Area 1 – Safe:

I know attention to safety is essential in child care because it is one of the core needs

children need in a safe and healthy environment and in life. There is a clear and very accessible

hand washing station that has clear bright signs that shows for how long you should wash your

hands for. The recommended time for washing hands with soapy water is about twenty seconds.

To make sure my environment is safe for the children in my care, I do the following things: I

make sure that I welcome children in a warm positive greeting and make sure they feel

welcomed and cared for throughout the whole day. Have children wash hands at the start of their

day, before snacks and lunch, and after bathroom breaks. My goal is to make sure my students

will have their basic needs met in a positive learning space.

Functional Area 2 – Healthy:

I know that maintaining a healthy environment in child care is important because: it

keeps the students and educators safe and maintains the low chances of getting sick by taking

those extra steps to stay clean and doing what is necessary.

To make sure my environment is healthy for the children in my care, I do the following

things: I have observed and will practice this in future classroom settings to have the set aside

areas to wash and sanitize used toys.

Functional Area 3 – Learning

I know how important it is to provide a child care environment that promotes learning

because it helps the student reach thoscognative and physical milestones needed to become a

great learner.
To make sure my environment supports and promotes children’s learning, I do the

following things: Have a great arrangement of engaging learning centers that are age appropriate.

In those centers there will be a reading space that will have audio learning opportunities too.

Resource Reflection: CS1a – The sample menu in my Resource Collection shows my

commitment to children’s nutritional needs by: I have looked over and have observed students

meal time and snacks at the lab school. The menu and clear signing of the students with dietary

needs posted. All menus have all food groups and a good variation of nutritious foods. When it is

time for snacks or lunch singing was encouraged by the teachers and that made eating all foods

positive and fun to eat.

CS1b – The room where my Verification Visit Observation will occur reflects the way I

believe young children learn best in the following ways: This is the most important part I do

want to highlight I have already observed and the great passion to keep the students engaged and

feel validated and heard is very reflective of my views on a safe and healthy learning

environment. Another way is the positive reinforcement that helps promote so many great

learning habits.
