Competency Statement 1.

To establish and maintain a safe, healthy, learning

environment.

Safe:
To maintain a safe environment, I will ensure that there is always proper teacher to child ratio. I
will make sure that the materials in my classroom are safe and free from damage, for the
children to play with. I will include my students in the rule making decisions. I will make sure
that the children in my care are only picked up by authorized people. I will ensure that myself
and my co-teacher, are being safe and being pro-active role models at all times.

Healthy:
To maintain a healthy environment, I will perform daily health checks on each child in my care.
I will keep detailed, up to date health records for each child. I will teach the children the proper
hand washing technique. I will ensure that each child gets significant rest time. I will ensure that
each child gets the appropriate amount of snack before they go home. When a child is sick, I
will ensure that health checks are done in a timely manor. If the sick child needs to be sent home
I will tell the parent or guardian the appropriate step to follow in order for the child to be able to
return to school. If I suspect any child abuse or neglect, I will report it.

Learning environment:
I will ensure that the children’s learning environment meets their developmental needs with a
variety of learning centers and activities, that match the skills they are learning and developing.
Centers in the classroom will be set up near there required resources. I will take into account
any children in my class with special needs or learning disabilities. When making a schedule for
preschool activities, I will allow sufficient time to follow through with the activity. My schedule
will be structured and also flexible, to allow for changes if needed. My classroom environment
and daily schedule will help the children thrive and grow.

CS I-A:
The sample menu I provided, is an example of a menu in the head start setting. It provides two
balanced meals and a healthy snack every day. Water is also available in addition to milk with
every meal. If I were to change anything about the menu, I would try to serve healthy options
for chicken products, also I would serve more fresh fruit over canned fruit.
CS 1-B:
The room environment in which I teach, is an example of a preschool learning environment.
The messier activities, such as art or snack, are done in the designated section. While more
active play and learning experiences are done on the carpet. I wouldn’t change anything because
the set up my classroom has works great and allows for equal opportunities for each child to
play.

CS 1-C:
The Lesson plan included in my resource collection was prepared by myself. It clearly states the
study and what week of it we are on, activities to be done, what intentional teaching cards to
use, along with the IEPs in my class. It allows myself and my co-teacher to properly teach the
children, and keep a schedule at the same time. It allows for my self and my co-teacher to have
an at a glance look at the goals for our students with IEPs.
