Kim, H. M. (2020). What do others’ reactions to body posting on Instagram tell us? The effects

of social media comments on viewers’ body image perception. New Media & Society,

1461444820956368.

This study looked at how online comments on a self-image posting can impact young

adults' attitudes of the perfect body and, as a result, their possess body awareness. It was also

investigated how the personality that private citizens have among their subjective perfect and

even their own body affects this entire pattern of social contrast.

This study used a qualitative research project to evaluate the impacts of social media

remarks on individuals posting audiences' perfect body impression and self‐esteem. Instagram is

a photo-sharing online platform used by 75% of individuals among the ages of 18 and 24. The

incentive resources were designed to look like a characteristic post. Members were randomly

allocated to an Instagram body commenting that was either (1) beneficial to the illustrated body,

(2) extremely damaging to the illustrated body, or (3) with no remark.

Data analysis was performed by use of One-Way ANOVA and chi-square test to

determine if there was any significant difference between the measurements. The finding was

F(2, 327)=0.438, p=.645; ethnicity, χ2 (8, N=330)=1.69, p=.989; BMI, χ2=(4, N=306)=1.70, p=.791; and

self-esteem, F(2, 327)=0.128, p=.880. Randomization was thus successful. Participants rated the remarks

those who read on a 7-point likert scale . Remarks advantageous to the illustrated body (M=6.35,

SD=0.75) have been regarded notably higher than just the magnitude middle point (4), each t(85)=29.13,

p.001, whereas remarks undesirable to the illustrated body (M=2.39, SD=1.23) were rated substantially

lower than just the scale middle point (4), each t(95)=12.82, p.001.

These findings make significant contributions to current studies by expanding on two

main conceptual structures underpinning the mechanisms of mainstream press influence on body

image: (1) idealised version and (2) social exchange processes. First, the results indicate that

online comments influence viewers' perceptions of what the skin having posted is ideal.

Particularly, contingent upon whether remarks are positive or negative to the illustrated body,

online comments have either entirely perfect or ideal-derogatory effects, guiding audiences' ideal

impression of the body commenting.

This research will be beneficial in understanding the variables to measure. It will also

assist in understanding if I should use the experimental methodology or opt for the quantitative

survey research. The study will also assist in determining the knowledge gap that exists .
