Box and checklist Techniques - Part 3 (Extended Writing) (Report)

Before you start writing:


1. Decide what facts and information you will need to include. Note (if necessary)
2. Decide on the subject headings – based on the task.
3. Identify the key ideas from the task. (key ideas that are required to include in the report)
4. Think about what your opinion is and how you will use the notes provided.
5. Decide what your recommendations or suggestions will be like.
6. Organise according to the required points.
7. Identify and use some good words/phrases appropriately.
8. Identify and used accurate registers according to the task appropriately.
9. Divide your ideas up under subject headings and plan your report
Plan your review (I C E)
Paragraph 1 – Introduction
1. This is the introduction. Say what you are going to do in your report.
Suggested phrases: The aim/purpose of this report is to present/recommend/review/examine…/This
report aims to…/This is a report on…/This report will present the findings of…/It will also make
suggestions/recommendations for…/It will also suggest/recommend/discuss/analyse…

1. Discuss the first point or option and evaluate it and/or make suggestions
2. Use formal language to expand on your ideas based on the key ideas stated in the task, supporting
them with examples.
3. Make sure you use a heading for each paragraph.

Paragraph 5 – Ending
Bring the report to an end by summing up.
Give your recommendation or make suggestions about what you think should be done.

…/For these reasons, I feel the best option is…/

When you have finished writing, check that: g. you used grammatically correct forms.
a. you have followed your plan. h. you have checked for spelling and punctuation
b. you have included important details. mistakes.
c. you have used headings. i. your writing style is suitable for the reader.
d. each paragraph starts with a main idea. j. you have used appropriate linking words.
e. you have supported your ideas with example. k. you have used appropriate cohesive devices.
f. you have used appropriate formal language and
full form of verbs.
