Value in Focus
LAKAS NG LOOB/COURAGE
The ancient root of the word "courage" is cor, which in Latin refers to the heart, a symbol of
love. "Courage" without love is simply not courage. Another Latin word, fortitudo (from which
we derive the cardinal virtue of fortitude), brings out the strength that courage must possess. But
courage must possess both strength and love at the same time. (Demarco, 2006)
Courage enables a person to face trials or hardships in life with confidence and trust. Louise as a
child showed courage in facing trials and difficulties and overcoming obstacles while doing what
is good. Though her childhood experience is painful, she remain kind, responsible and diligent.
